General Safety Precautions
• General Rules Lab Coat Footwear Handwashing No Eating in Lab Area Personal Belongings Fire Procedure Injuries Emergency Number
Biohazardous Materials• Do not remove plates etc from lab• Waste plates • Waste non disposals• Spills• Nothing Goes Down The SINK
Unprocessed• Disinfect work area• Spill cleanup• Wash hands before leaving
Chemical Preparation• Check MSDS for proper handling• Labeling and storage• PPE• Order needed• Safe Disposal
Disposal• Glassware• Broken glass• Autoclaving• Hazardous wastes
Glassware• Rinse and ensure glassware is
immersed in water in bucket in washup area
• When necessary do a load in dishwasher
• Return to appropriate shelf etc
Broken Glass• Not contaminated with biohazard
in glass breakage containers• Biohazard contaminated: yellow
sharps containers• Leave note on white board in
S365C if broken glassware
Autoclaving• Waste biohazards• Liquids
– Use slow exhaust• Wrapped
– Allow for drying cycle• Autoclave tape• Check with others before starting
(particularly Carolynne)
Hazardous Waste• Container
– Appropriate size• Labeling
– Contains all ingredients (no abbreviations)
• Location– S365F
Before Leaving After Every Session
• Clean any areas that have been used (balances, counter, fumehood)
• Glassware is put in washup area• Turn off gas• Turn off deionized water• Turn off lights• Turn off autoclave• Lock door
Working Alone• If at all possible avoid it• A risk assessment of your work must be done
with your supervisor to determine what can be done with minimum supervision
• Higher risk procedures should not be done when alone (working with hazardous materials, risk of fire)
Working Alone • The Faculty of Science will be
striking a multidiscipline committee to develop working alone guidelines for the Faculty of Science
• Have some type of checkin procedure

WHMIS
What is WHMIS• Workplace Hazardous Materials
Information System• Provides information about hazardous
materials used in the workplace• Workers have the right to receive
information about each controlled product they use
• Goal of WHMIS is to reduce injury and disease.
HAZARD CLASSES1. Class A:
Compressed Gas2. Class B:
Flammable & Combustible
3. Class C: Oxidizing Material
4. Class D: Poisonous & Infectious Material
HAZARD CLASSES• Class E:
Corrosive Material • Class F:
Dangerously Reactive Material
SUPPLIER LABELSSeven items of information mustbe included on supplier label:
1. Product identifier2. Hazard Symbols3. Risk Phrase4. Precautionary Statements5. First Aid Measures6. Supplier Identification7. Reference to MSDS
WORKPLACE LABELSRequired on containers for eachcontrolled product on site, including secondary containers.
Provide 3 types of information:1. Product Identifier2. Safe Handling and personal protective
clothing and equipment.3. Reference to MSDS
WORKPLACELABEL
MSDS SHEET• Material Safety Data Sheet • provides specific hazard information,
safe handling information, and emergency procedures for a controlled product.
• Key source of information for developing safe working procedures.
MSDS SHEETSNine Recommended Section Headings:1. Product Information2. Hazardous Ingredients3. Physical Data4. Fire and Explosion Hazard5. Reactivity Data6. Toxicological Properties7. Preventative Measures8. First Aid Measures9. Preparation Information
Cycloheximide MSDS• Routes of Entry: Absorbed through skin.
Eye contact. Inhalation. Ingestion.• Toxicity to Animals: Acute oral toxicity
(LD50): 2 mg/kg [Rat].• Chronic Effects on Humans:• DEVELOPMENTAL TOXICITY: Classified
Reproductive system/toxin/female, Development toxin [POSSIBLE].
• Causes damage to the following organs: the nervous system, liver.
Cycloheximide• May cause damage to the following
organs: blood, kidneys, gastrointestinal tract, skin.
• Other Toxic Effects on Humans: Very hazardous in case of skin contact (irritant), of ingestion, of inhalation.

RESPONSIBLITIESWorkers1. Know & understand info on labels and MSDS2. Handle controlled products safely.3. Inform employer if labels missingEmployer1. Ensure workers understand WHMIS2. Provide training3. Ensure controlled products have MSDS and
WHMIS Labels4. MSDS available to workers
