Take home today!

August 29, 2011 Dear Parents and Students: Schnee Learning Center is proud to announce the award of the Safe and Drug Free Schools grant. The purpose of this grant is to reduce and eliminate non-academic barriers to improve safe and supportive learning environments, resulting in increased academic achievement. The program at Schnee is called SEED (Support, Education, Encouragement, Dedication) and has five key components:

1. Prevention—early screenings and education 2. Parent/Community Connection and involvement 3. Engagement—enrichment activities 4. Treatment—on-site services and linkage to community resources 5. Conflict resolution—education and skill building that leads to non-violent conflict resolution

As part of the new planning phase, Schnee has agreed to participate in a pilot program in which anonymous surveys are used to collect data on school climate and youth risk behaviors. The data collected will be used to guide development, selection, and implementation of programs state and nationwide. This will help ensure appropriate and effective services are put in place. If you do NOT want your student to participate in these surveys please send an email to [email protected] to opt out. Informative, entertaining, and effective methods will be used to connect students and their families with educational, recreational and wellness activities, and community resources. Schnee has partnered with the YMCA, Child Guidance & Family Solutions, Community Health Center, AmeriCorps, and others to enhance the offerings to Schnee students and their families. Schnee students and their families will be provided the chance to utilize these activities and services at no cost, while potentially earning additional credits, and fulfilling the state mandated hours requirements of 6.25 per week. As this brand new program evolves, you will continue to receive updates and invitations to participate. We strongly encourage students to take advantage of these exciting new opportunities. We look forward to working with you to further realize the Schnee motto, “Success for all.” Cordially, Schnee Learning Center Staff
