Joseph Oganda February 25, 2018 Prayer is the light of the Spirit Prayer and converse with God is a supreme good: it is a partnership and union with God. As the eyes of the body are enlightened when they see light, so our spirit, when it is intent on God, is illumined by his infinite light. I do not mean the prayer of outward observance but prayer from the heart, not confined to fixed times or periods but continuous throughout the day and night. Our spirit should be quick to reach out toward God, not only when it is engaged in meditation; at other times also, when it is carrying out its duties, caring for the needy, performing works of charity, giving generously in the service of others, our spirit should long for God and call him to mind, so that these works may be seasoned with the salt of God’s love, and so make a palatable offering to the Lord of the universe. Throughout the whole of our lives we may enjoy the benefit that comes from prayer if we devote a great deal of time to it. Prayer is the light of the spirit, true knowledge of God, mediating between God and man. The spirit, raised up to heaven by prayer, clings to God with the utmost tenderness; like a child crying tearfully for its mother, it craves the milk that God provides. It seeks the satisfaction of its own desires, and receives gifts outweighing the whole world of nature. Prayer stands before God as an honored ambassador. It gives joy to the spirit, peace to the heart. I speak of prayer, not words. It is the longing for God, love too deep for words, a gift not given by man but by God’s grace. The apostle Paul says: We do not know how we are to pray but the Spirit himself pleads for us with inexpressible longings. When the Lord gives this kind of prayer to a man, he gives him riches that cannot be taken away, heavenly food that satisfies the spirit. One who tastes this food is set on fire with an eternal longing for the Lord: his spirit burns as in a fire of the utmost intensity. Practice prayer from the beginning. Paint your house the colors of modesty and humility. Make it radiant with the light of justice. Decorate it with the finest gold leaf of good deeds. Adorn it with the walls and stones of faith and gener- osity. Crown it with the pinnacle of prayer. In this way you will make it a perfect dwelling place for the Lord. You will be able to receive him as in a splendid palace, and through his grace you will already possess him, his image enthroned in the temple of your spirit. From a homily by Saint John Chrysostom, bishop (Supp. Hom. 6 De precatione; PG 64, 462-466)

Catholic Service and Ministry Appeal (CSMA) Fourteen (14) diocesan ministries funded by The Catholic Service and Ministry Appeal are direct recipi-ents of your parishioners’ gifts. The largest portion of appeal funds – 41% -- is allocated to our social ser-vice agencies – Catholic Urban Programs, Daystar Community Program, the Office of Hispanic Ministry, Griffin Center and Prison Ministry. I do not need to tell you the wonderful work done by these agencies’ ded-icated staff members in serving the poor and those in need; I’m sure you also are aware of the growing num-ber of people who come to them for assistance each year. Unfortunately, however, the appeal is able to fund only 17% of their expenses – these agencies must seek 83% of their income from other sources! When appeal goals are not met, this puts additional financial burdens on these agencies or people seeking their help must be turned away. The agencies and those they serve are counting on us so their work continues in the coming year. Every gift-no mater the size-is truly needed and appreciated.

Black & Indian Missions Thank you to everyone who participated in the 134th annual Black and Indian Mission Collection last weekend. Your prayerful support enables people to come to know Jesus Christ in African American, Na-tive American, and Alaska Native communities all over the U.S.A. Spreading the Gospel couldn’t happen without your support!

Second Sunday of Lent -Surprising and mysterious. Who is this Jesus shining before us in dazzling white clothes? The gospel tells us this: law-giver like Moses, prophet like Elijah, beloved Son like no other! He is the one who intercedes for us, who prays for us, who desires beyond hope for us an obediently devoted life now and a final heavenly life to come. • In listening to the Beloved Son, what do I need to

hear? • How will this hearing change or better my behav-

iors? • How will I walk before the Lord these Lenten days

doing mercy work?

Rˎ˜˙ˎˌ˝ L˒ˏˎ C˘˛˗ˎ˛ The Vocation of Peacemaking - Our biblical heritage and our body of tradition make the vocation of peace-making mandatory. Authentic prayer, worship and sacra-mental life challenge us to conversion of our hearts and summon us to works of peace. These concerns are obvi-ously not ours alone, but are the work of the entire com-munity of faith and of all people of good will. Learn, Act, Connect, Pray - Every liturgy is a call to and celebration of peace. The cause of peace be constantly reflected in our prayers of petition. In our schools and seminaries, our religious education and formation efforts, our colleg-es and universities, we need to continue and intensify our efforts to integrate Catholic teaching on justice, non-violence and peace into the curriculum and broader life of our educational endeavors. In our advocacy and citi-zenship efforts and through legislative networks and broader participation in the political process, Catholics can take our principles of peacemaking into the public arena, where they can help shape an active and con-structive U.S. role in the world.
