In the Temple of Jerusalem, only priests could enter the Holy of Holies, the men could enter the sanctuary, while women and children only got into the vestibule. So the disciples knew that chil- dren never approached the Rabbis. To show their respect for Jesus, they tried to turn the children away. But Jesus saw this as a chance to teach the disciples about the kingdom. As they tried to send the children back to their parents, Jesus changes the rules. He invites the kids to come to him and even makes an example of them: "accept the kingdom of God like children" or you won't get in at all. So what do we learn from this? Children don't make themselves look important. They haven't learned to brag about their accomplishments, or how to offer a bribe to get what they want. They simply accept what is given to them. In a culture where we are ex- pected to make a good impression, where we compete to get scholarships and jobs, we may be more like the disciples than we think. A young man falling in love may be tempted to show what a great athlete he is, or how he plans to get a high paying job after graduation. Yet all he really needs to do is tell the girl that he loves her. We cannot make ourselves look important to God; we can't bribe Him with good works or change His mind with promises to avoid sin. We can be sorry for our sins, and tell Him we love Him, and ask for help with our weaknesses. Children also have great faith. Not the deep faith that comes with adult experience, but a faith that sees goodness in everyone. If we can keep that faith in God's goodness, while developing a deeper faith that is not discouraged by sin and evil, we are on the way to the Kingdom. Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. Late have I Loved You “Late have I loved you, O Beauty ever ancient, ever new, late have I loved you! You were within me, but I was outside, and it was there that I searched for you. In my unloveliness I plunged into the lovely things which you created. You were with me, but I was not with you. Created things kept me from you; yet if they had not been in you they would not have been at all. You called, you shouted, and you broke through my deafness. You flashed, you shone, and you dis- pelled my blindness. You breathed your fragrance on me; I drew in breath and now I pant for you. I have tasted you, now I hunger and thirst for more. You touched me, and I burned for your peace.” Saint Augustine, bishop (354-430)

Respect Life Corner Another Look at Contraception; Read the full version at usccb.org/contraception. To some, the Catholic Church’s consistent teach-ing against birth control may seem outdated. Yet with each passing year, evidence of contraception’s negative consequences keeps piling up. In the time since birth control first became widely used, science has shown that some contraceptives can cause early abortions; procured abortions and nonmarital births skyrocketed; and women have been subjected to sometimes serious or fatal health issues, as well as what economist George Akerlof calls “the feminization of pov-erty.”* As humans made in God’s image, we are called to imitate His generous, sacrificial, life-giving, and eternal love. Through the Church’s teaching, He invites us to a fuller, richer, deeper way of life and love. *(Full citation at usccb.org/contraception.) Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 2018 Grandparents know this. The question about divorce today leads to this normative answer by Jesus – about union, about becoming “one flesh”. A further con-versation is about receiving children – and how they ac-cept life, affection, love, and, thus, the Kingdom of God. Because they “know” dependence, they trust oth-ers. Grandparents relish this. They sing, as the appoint-ed Psalm 128:1-6 does today, of being blessed, of trust-ing the Lord, of embracing children as blessing, of seeing their children’s children. So does God! • How can I strengthen marriage? • How will I cherish and protect my children and

grandchildren and all children? • How will I accept God’s action in my life as would

a child?

Sympathy is extended to the family of Mason Lee Rhoades

Son of Josh & Amy Rhoades Infant grandson of Ernest & Charlene Chitwood

May he rest in peace. Please keep his family in your prayers
