Mission Statement We, the members of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, as a caring Christian community, help one another to live, to nurture, and to celebrate God’s gifts. We encourage others on their faith journeys to join us in giving witness to our Catholic faith and to grow as disciples. We celebrate the sacraments and receive the gift of grace to strengthen our faith and to en-rich our relationships with Christ and his Church. We gather together to pray, to worship, to give thanks, to petition, to seek comfort, to share joys and sorrows, and to experience God’s love, joy, and peace.

Penitential Rite This weekend we will pray the Confiteor as our peni-tential rite. We intend to do this the first weekend of every month in Ordinary Time so that we do not for-get this lovely prayer.
Father Reynolds will be away at the annual diocesan clergy institute from Monday through Wednesday. Ann Ratliff will be away from the parish office on Monday only.
Congratulations Congratulations and best wishes to those newly re-ceived into the church this weekend, Virginia Bennett, Dustin Brisel, Jason Faidley, & Mark Blasius. Thanks to Luke Gregory for his good work in preparing these people for membership in the church.

Prayer for Vocations
In an effort to foster a culture of vocations in our parish, we will have a time of prayer for vocations after the Masses this weekend. Members of the par-ish are always invited to remain in the church following Mass for a quiet time of personal meditation. This weekend, an effort will be made to use time
after Mass for parishioners to focus their prayer on vo-cations. Following the closing song, for those who wish to remain, a group prayer will be recited followed by an invitation for personal reflection. We ask all to observe silence while exiting church.
Prayer for Vocations
God our Father, our needs are great and our people hunger to hear the Gospel proclaimed in word, deed and sacrament.
Send the power of your Holy Spirit to encourage men and women to open their
hearts to hear Your call and to joyfully serve in the Diocese of Davenport as priests,
deacons, religious and lay ministers.
May those who minister now be filled with Your Spirit of courage and love. May they persevere in their call to serve Your people.
Grant that many will be inspired by their witness and love to answer Your call.
Amen

Jesus raises from the dead the son of a widow. All are amazed. God could be asking you to raise his people from the death of sin and despair as you minister to them as a priest. If you think God is calling you to serve Him in a very special way through the priesthood, please call Fr. Thom Hennen, diocesan vocations director at 563-324-1911, or write: HennenT@ diodav.org.
Cemetery Collection
Every year at this time—around Memorial Day—there is an appeal made to the parish on behalf of Sacred Heart Cemetery. Every time a cemetery plot is sold some of the income from that sale is put aside for Perpetual Care. You can imagine that the Perpetual Care money collected decades ago would not be near adequate for current day ex-penses of maintenance for the cemetery, let alone for improvements. The burial of the dead is a pious and holy thing, as is the care of their buried remains. The cemetery is a holy and sacred place, as it claims our bodies until the Resurrection. Your generous response to the appeal for Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery will be greatly appreciated.
Pop Can Drive Please start saving your pop cans for a Pop Can Drive benefiting Sr. High Youth Trips on June 11th. If you

Holy Hour During this Year of Mercy, Pope Francis and the US Bishops have en-couraged us to grow deeper in our understanding of God’s Mercy. Mak-ing a Holy Hour one day a week be-
fore the Blessed Sacrament in our chapel is an easy way to do this. This can be a time to reflect on our blessings, share our concerns with Jesus, ask for prayers for our family, the church, the world and listen to God speak to our hearts. The Chapel is open daily during the time that a staff member is present in McCann Center or the church. When we make our Holy Hour we are ask to sign the guest book that is on the ledge under the stai-ned glass window. Prayer books are available in a bas-ket below.

Marriage Moments
Married couples don't often think of being widowed but no one lives forever. Lest this thought seem too morose, remember that one day one of you will be alone to help you appreciate your beloved today. Honor or pray for a widow(er) you know today.
Parenting Pointers
How many shoes does your child have? How many do you? How many can you wear at one time? The first week in June is National Barefoot Week. Have fun going bare-foot for a day or an hour this week, but remember that some kids don't have any shoes. Check out Soles4Souls to see how you can help. http://barefootweek.com/.
Thank You . . .
Sacred Heart thanks our Knights of Columbus Council 2663 for then donation of two new cof-fee pots for McCann Center. Thank-you Knights for all you do!
Scholarship Thank You Sacred Heart Church, Thank you so much for not only the gen-erous scholarship, but also for creating such an amazing church community for me to grow up in. I’ve never met a more loving, giving, and accept-ing group of people than the Sacred Heart Parish, and it has had such a profound affect on me and my growth as an individual. Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve been proud to call myself a Catholic because of how genuine I’ve found those in this religion to be. Catholicism has always pushed me to become a better, more giving person, and I cannot thank you and the parish enough for that. Thank you again!
Sincerely, Grace Coen

Catholics in Action Catholics in Action (CIA) is a three day service/mission experience for high school youth from around the diocese. Normally held in Iowa City, this year CIA will be held in Fort Madison with HTC high school as the gather-ing space. Several students from the Fort Madison area submitted a bid to the diocese in hopes of being the se-lected host site. As with all communities, there is a huge need for help. This marks the 19th year that CIA partici-pates have taken their faith to the streets. Plans are for a large make over at Riverview Park in Fort Madison on Sunday, June 26 from 2-6 pm. This will allow for everyone to work together to improve the park through clean up, painting and landscap-ing. After all the work, everyone will be treated to a cook-out and community time. Other work sites will include; working at nursing homes, helping with maintenance at local cemeteries, working at PAWS animal shelter and helping with yard work for local residents. CIA is based around the 8 Catholic social teach-ings. This year's theme will be based on two of these themes, Call to Family, Community Participation and Op-tion for the Poor and Vulnerable. While our society often exalts individualism, the Catholic tradition teaches that human beings grow and achieve fulfillment in community. Also, in a society marred by deepening divisions between rich an poor, our tradition recalls the story of the Last Judgement, and instructs us to put the needs of the poor and vulnerable first. Call Mike Linnenbrink at 319-316-2115 for more information and questions.
Have you remembered Sacred Heart Church in your will? Would you consider it?
Food Pantry Sunday Are you ready to fight hunger right here in our community? The first Sunday of each month has been des-ignated as Food Pantry Sunday. Members of our parish are invited to bring nonperishable food items or
monetary gifts on the first Sunday of each month to do-nate to the food pantry. Place your donations in the food pantry box in the vestibule of the church.
A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT A thought or two on stewardship in the Sunday readings
Saint Paul begins today’s second reading by stating that he was “called” to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ. As baptized Catholics who have an opportunity to share in Christ’s life through the Eucharist regularly, we too are called to proclaim the teachings of Christ. We are stew-ards of Christ’s Gospel. But how are we responding to that call? Do we listen for the guidance of the Holy Spirit? Do we evade, dodge or ignore the Lord’s call? Do we attempt to proclaim the Gospel in a spirit of compas-sion and love? Reflect on how you exercise stewardship over the Gospel.

Prayer for the Year of Mercy
Lord Jesus Christ,
You have taught us to be merciful
like the heavenly Father, and have told us that
whoever sees you sees Him.
Show us your face and we will be saved.
Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew
from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene
from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal,
and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us,
the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman:
“If you knew the gift of God!”
You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all
by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world,
its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers
would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion
for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them
feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God.
Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing,
so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord,
and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor,
proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind.
We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession
of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever.
Amen.

Sick-call sets make wonderful wedding presents
I take communion to shut-ins and wonder
why, when someone is near death or the
priest visits to anoint, a sick-call set is not
set up. Decades ago, we all got one as a
wedding gift.
When I’m in a parish, I make sure all of my ex-traordinary minis-ters take a sick-call (crucifix) set with them because many homes don’t have them. According to the ritual for the Pastoral Care of the Sick (I.III.74), the Eucharist should be transported in a pyx that is kept in a burse. At the location (home), there should be a proper place for the Eucharist, usually a table with a linen cloth, candles, and possibly holy water. All these items are in the set. So, if time and location allow, this should still be done. However, it is not essential if the person is in danger of death or a sacred space cannot be set up (for example, on the side of the road).
These sets are available for purchase; many Catholic supply stores have them. They make a wonderful wedding gift because they recognize that spouses intend to be to-gether until death. The set can be used when one becomes ill or close to death. Unfortunately, many families do not attend Mass, so their preparation for receiving the Eucha-rist or being anointed is far from their minds. Their aware-ness of, and access to, such items now come from parish ministers.

The Library’s Latest Welcome to Sacred Heart Library’s col-umn of reviews of current books, DVDs, and CDs that our available in our library. Please come and check out these and other items. St. Joseph, the foster father of Jesus is a beautiful example for our human fathers and our parish father. In Fr. Gary
Caster’s book, Jo-
seph the Man
Who Raised Je-
sus, we see the perfect model for all men. In many ways St. Joseph is a mystery but his influence upon Jesus the child he raised and the Church he protect is immeasurable. As we read and ponder his patience, his purity and his courage we cannot help but gain a greater love and respect for this holy man. While he spoke few words in Scripture his example speaks many words. Those who already have a devotion to St. Joseph will love this book. It would be a meaningful gift to both our be-loved parish fathers, seminarians, our fathers and grandfathers. The Library is open after weekend Masses or Monday, Tuesday, & Friday morn-ings. 1 Kgs 17:17–24 / Gal 1:11–19 / Lk 7:11–17
My father died when I was eighteen. For a long time I clung to the Lord in my pain. For a longer time, I was angry and often wondered where God was. I looked for answers in vain. For those of us who have watched someone die, today’s readings may seem unrealistic. Elijah the prophet stretches himself out on a dead child and calls on God to restore his life. The child lives. Jesus stops a funeral procession and bids the dead son of a widow to get up. He does so. “Where was God,” we might ask, “when my [father, wife, child, or friend] died and left me to mourn?” The truth is, God was and is there. In God, we have the hope of eternal life. Moreover, the faithful de-parted remain present to the living through the communion of saints, the stories and memories we hold and share, and in my case, the care I received from those who became a bit like fathers to me when I needed it most. Through God’s grace, I am now more compassionate and caring toward those who have suffered loss. I will not
fool you: fortyfive years later, I still miss my father and wish my children could have known him. But in the Gospels, we hear the truth. God offers to all who believe and fol-low him the gift of resurrection at the end of our earthly lives and brings us new life even in the midst of death and suffering. This new life is the hope and joy of our faith, even if it takes us a little while to realize it.
