TATA MOTORS HISTORY

Tata Motors Limited is India’s largest automobile company, with

consolidated revenues of Rs.1,23,133 crores (USD 27 billion) in 2010-11.

It is the leader in commercial vehicles in each segment, and among the

top three in passenger vehicles with winning products in the compact,

midsize car and utility vehicle segments. The Company is the world's

fourth largest truck manufacturer, and the world's third largest bus

manufacturer.

The Company's over 25,000 employees are guided by the vision to be

"best in the manner in which we operate, best in the products we

deliver, and best in our value system and ethics."

Established in 1945, Tata Motors' presence indeed cuts across the

length and breadth of India. Over 5.9 million Tata vehicles ply on Indian

roads, since the first rolled out in 1954. The Company's manufacturing

base in India is spread across Jamshedpur (Jharkhand), Pune

(Maharashtra), Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh), Pantnagar (Uttarakhand),

Sanand (Gujarat) and Dharwad (Karnataka). Following a strategic

alliance with Fiat in 2005, it has set up an industrial joint venture with

Fiat Group Automobiles at Ranjangaon (Maharashtra) to produce both

Fiat and Tata cars and Fiat power trains. The Company's dealership,

sales, services and spare parts network comprises over 3500 touch

points; Tata Motors also distributes and markets Fiat branded cars in

India.

Tata Motors, the first Company from India's engineering sector to be

listed in the New York Stock Exchange (September 2004), has also

emerged as an international automobile company. Through subsidiaries

and associate companies, Tata Motors has operations in the UK, South

Korea, Thailand Tata Motors, the first Company from India's engineering

sector to be listed in the New York Stock Exchange (September 2004),

has also emerged as an international automobile company. Through

subsidiaries and associate companies, Tata Motors has operations in the

UK, South Korea, Thailand and Spain. Tata Motors is also expanding its

international footprint, established through exports since 1961. The

Company's commercial and passenger vehicles are already being

marketed in several countries in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, South

East Asia, South Asia and South America. It has franchisee/joint venture

assembly operations in Kenya, Bangladesh, Ukraine, Russia, Senegal

and South Africa.

The foundation of the Company's growth over the last 50 years is a deep

understanding of economic stimuli and customer needs, and the ability

to translate them into customer-desired offerings through leading edge

R&D. With over 4,500 engineers and scientists, the Company's

Engineering Research Centre, established in 1966, has enabled

pioneering technologies and products. The Company today has R&D

centre in Pune, Jamshedpur, Lucknow, Dharwad in India, and in South

Korea, Spain, and the UK. It was Tata Motors, which developed the first

indigenously developed Light Commercial Vehicle, India's first Sports

Utility Vehicle and, in 1998, the Tata Indica, India's first fully indigenous

passenger car. Within two years of launch, Tata Indica became India's

largest selling car in its segment. In 2005, Tata Motors created a new

segment by launching the Tata Ace, India's first indigenously developed

mini-truck.

In January 2008, Tata Motors unveiled its People's Car, the Tata Nano,

which India and the world have been looking forward to. The Tata Nano

has been subsequently launched, as planned, in India in March 2009. A

development, which signifies a first for the global automobile industry,

the Nano brings the comfort and safety of a car within the reach of

Roll.no.1112370011 Saroj Institute of Technology & Management 24

Page 25: Saad Ansari Project

thousands of families. The standard version has been priced at

Rs.100,000 (excluding VAT and transportation cost).

Designed with a family in mind, it has a roomy passenger compartment

with generous leg space and head room. It can comfortably seat four

persons. Its mono-volume design will set a new benchmark among small

cars. Its safety performance exceeds regulatory requirements in India.

Its tailpipe emission performance too exceeds regulatory requirements.

In terms of overall pollutants, it has a lower pollution level than two-

wheelers being manufactured in India today. The lean design strategy

has helped minimize weight, which helps maximize performance per

unit of energy consumed and delivers high fuel efficiency. The high fuel

efficiency also ensures that the car has low carbon dioxide emissions,

thereby providing the twin benefits of an affordable transportation

solution with a low carbon footprint.

In May 2009, Tata Motors ushered in a new era in the Indian automobile

industry, in keeping with its pioneering tradition, by unveiling its new

range of world standard trucks called Prima. In their power, speed,

carrying capacity, operating economy and trims, they will introduce new

benchmarks in India and match the best in the world in performance at

a lower life-cycle cost.

Tata Motors is equally focused on environment-friendly technologies in

emissions and alternative fuels. It has developed electric and hybrid

vehicles both for personal and public transportation. It has also been

implementing several environment-friendly technologies in

manufacturing processes, significantly enhancing resource conservation.

Through its subsidiaries, the Company is engaged in engineering and

automotive solutions, construction equipment manufacturing,

automotive vehicle components manufacturing and supply chain

activities, machine tools and factory automation solutions, high-

precision tooling and plastic and electronic components for automotive

and computer applications, and automotive retailing and service

operations.

Tata Motors is committed to improving the quality of life of communities

by working on four thrust areas – employability, education, health and

environment. The activities touch the lives of more than a million

citizens. The Company's support on education and employability is

focused on youth and women. They range from schools to technical

education institutes to actual facilitation of income generation. In health,

our intervention is in both preventive and curative healthcare. The goal

of environment protection is achieved through tree plantation,

conserving water and creating new water bodies and, last but not the

least, by introducing appropriate technologies in our vehicles and

operations for constantly enhancing environment care With the

foundation of its rich heritage, Tata Motors today is etching a refulgent

future.

Page 38: Saad Ansari Project

BRIEF HISTORY OF AUTOMOBILE

INDUSTRY IN INDIA

1940s the Indian automotive industry was at a very nascent stage. An embryonic

automotive industry emerges in India.

In the initial years after independence Indian automobile industry was plagued by

unfavorable government policies. All it had to offer in the passenger car segment

was a 1940s Morris model called the Ambassador .

In 1953, government of India and private sector came together to build an

automotive component manufacturing industry to meet the rising needs of the

automobile industry. Nonetheless the growth was not on the expected lines, rather

relatively slow in the 1950s and 1960s due to the prevalence of nationalization and

license raj.It was in 1897 that a resident of Calcutta brought the first car to India.

The next year, there were four cars in Bombay, one of them owned by Jamshedji

Tata and the other three also by Parsis. That same year, the first pneumatic tiers

arrived in Bombay, with Dunlop opening an office in the city.

Roll.no.1112370011 Saroj Institute of Technology & Management 38

Page 39: Saad Ansari Project

Madras, it would appear, lagged behind, though it is related

that a car was seen on Mount Road on a brief outing in 1894. If that unconfirmed

appearance is ignored, the first recorded date of a car being in regular use in

Madras is 1901. The car was owned by A J Yorke, a director of Parry & Co. He

drove it daily from Ben’s Gardens, Adyar, to Parry’s in ‘Black Town’. The South’s

first registered car, MC-1, belonged to Francis Spring, at that time Secretary of the

Madras Railway Board and, in 1904, to become the Chairman of the Madras Port

Trust and ‘father’ of the Madras Harbor.

The first Indian-owned car in Madras, MC-3, was building contractor T

Namberumal Chetty’s . In 1903, Samuel John Green of Simpson & Co, Madras,

built India’s first steam car and caused a sensation on the roads of the city. The

Madras Mail hailed its appearance as the beginning of “a new industry for Madras.”

Two years later, Simpson’s built the first steam bus. It ran between Bezwada

(Vijayawada) and Masulipatam (Machilipatnam) in what was possibly the first

motor When TVS commenced operations in 1912, motor transport received a fillip

in South India. The firm was founded by T V Sundram Iyengar to operate a bus

service. T V Sundram Iyengar and Sons Ltd (now Sundaram Motors) became a

two international automobile manufacturers, Ford and General Motors, sensing the

potential, set up local companies that year to sell and service their motor cars and

trucks.

In 1928, General Motors India Ltd commenced assembling trucks and cars in its

factory in Bombay, the first car assembled in India rolling off the assembly line on

December 4th. Two years later, Ford Motor Co of India Ltd commenced assembly

Addison & Co Ltd commenced assembly of cars and trucks in Madras.

Hindustan Motors Ltd, Calcutta, and Premier Automobiles Ltd, Bombay, were

established in 1942 and 1944 respectively to progressively manufacture complete

automobiles. Hindustan Motors, a Birla group company, began manufacturing

operations in 1948 by assembling Morris Oxford cars and Bedford trucks, gradually

indigenizing the components. In 1957, the Morris Oxford, substantially indigenized,

INTRODUCTION OF AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY

In the year 1769, a French engineer by the name of Nicolas J. Cognate invented

the first automobile to run on roads. This automobile, in fact, was a self-powered,

three-wheeled, military tractor that made the use of a steam engine. The range of

the automobile, however, was very brief and at the most, it could only run at a

stretch for fifteen minutes. In addition, these automobiles were not fit for the roads

as the steam engines made them very heavy and large, and required ample

starting time. Oliver Evans was the first to design a steam engine driven

automobile in the U.S.

A Scotsman, Robert Anderson, was the first to invent an electric carriage between

1832 and 1839. However, Thomas Davenport of the U.S.A. and Scotsman Robert

Davidson were amongst the first to invent more applicable automobiles, making

use of non-rechargeable electric batteries in 1842. Development of roads made

traveling comfortable and as a result, the short ranged, electric battery driven

automobiles were no more the best option for traveling over longer distances.

Page 46: Saad Ansari Project

The Automobile Industry finally came of age with Henry Ford in 1914 for the bulk

production of cars. This lead to the development of the industry and it first begun in

the assembly lines of his car factory. The several methods adopted by Ford, made

the new invention (that is, the car) popular amongst the rich as well as the masses.

U.S Automobile Industry was flooded with foreign automobile companies,

especially those of Japan and Germany.

The current trends of the Global Automobile Industry reveal that in the developed

countries the Automobile Industries are stagnating as a result of the drooping car

markets, whereas the Automobile Industry in the developing nations, such as,

India and Brazil, have been consistently registering higher growth rates every

passing year for their flourishing domestic automobile markets.

INDIAN AUTO INDUSTRY

In 2009 estimated rate of growth of India auto industry is going to be 9 percent.

Auto industry in India has been hit hard by ongoing global financial recession.

Sales figures of India automobile industry for December 2008 have shown

However, there is still hope for automobile industry of India in 2009 as there are

certain factors working in its favor. India is blessed with a middle class, which is

getting economically stronger with every passing day. This class is being touted as

potential consumers for India auto industry in years to come.

Indian economy has been, more or less, able to withstand tremors of global

financial meltdown. Even though its rate of growth has slowed down considerably,

there are hopes of an economic revival. Work force of auto industry of India is

relatively well trained. All these factors indicate that there could be a decent future

for India auto industry in days to come.

India automobile market

India automobile market is likely to be in good shape in 2009. Much of this

optimism results from renewed interest being shown in India auto industry by

reputed overseas car makers. Nissan Motors, which is a well known Japanese car

making company, regards India automobile market as a global car manufacturing

hub for future.

Hyundai, a major automobile establishment of South Korea, has put in large

sums of money in India automobile market. As per its estimates, India auto

industry could become a major center for small car manufacturing organizations in

future.

There are some other automobile companies of world who have shown interest in

India auto market. Major names among these are General Motors, Skoda Auto and

Mercedes-Benz. These companies have major plans lined up for India auto

industry and are likely to invest a huge amount of money in India automobile

market.

India domestic auto industry

India domestic auto industry has been passing through a tough phase in 2008 and

such a trend is supposed to continue in 2009 as well. Leading members of India

auto industry have forecast a difficult path in 2009. Shinzo Nakanishi, managing

director of Maruti Suzuki, has said that 2009 would present them with a number of

challenges. fitted greatly from China auto insurance policies. One example is

Huatai Insurance Co, which generates 70 percent of its income from these

policies.

TYPES OF AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY

World The high growth in the Indian economy has resulted in many foreign car

manufacturers entering the Indian market. Rolls Royce, Bentley and Maybach are

examples of the few high end automobile manufacturers to enter India in the

recent years1980s. Most of these were outdated models like Hindustan Motors'

Ambassador .

Motors' Ambassador (which is still produced and sold). The only car with the latest

technology then was the Maruti 800. It became very popular because of the low

price, high fuel efficiency and good reliability. Since then the market has grown

with over 20 manufacturers and hundreds of models and variants. The Maruti 800

is at the lower end of the price range costing approx US $5,000 and Bugatti

Veyron at the other with a price tag of over 2 Million US dollars.

The Indian automotive industry has also greatly matured. The Tata Indica was

indigenously developed by Tata Motors. Another Indian manufacturer Mahindra &

Mahindra also came up with its own SUVs, the Scorpio and the Bolero. These cars

have proved very popular here and are also exported to the European markets. An

electric car is also manufactured by a local company, REVA. Tata Motors plans to

produce the world's first air powered in partnership with MDI of France.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Marketing Research is the backbone of marketing. The objective of my Project

is to study the consumer perception and to promote a new UV car launched

TATA VENTURE by TATA MOTORS in India.

The nature of my research is exploratory research. It’s goal is to shed light on the

real nature of the problem and to suggest possible selection and it involves

number of steps.

I. Define the Problem & Research Objective:

Management must define a problem in broader way. Because it is said that

defining the problem is half solved and the objective of my project is to study the

consumer perception about Tata Venture.

II. Develop the Research Plan

The second stage of marketing research calls for developing the most efficient

plan for gathering the needed information. Designing the research plan calls for

decision on the data sources, Research Approaches, Research Instrumental,

Sampling Plans & Contact Methods.

how the subject should be contacted. I have used personal interviews for collecting

data.

III. Collecting the information:

LIMITATIONS OF THE PROJECT

Every report has pros and cons so mine also have some Limitations. They can be

pointed as bellow:

Conclusion are made from only Luck now city

.The duration was short to make any conclusion

School segment we can not cover because almost School were closed due to

summer vacation.

The duration was short to make any conclusion

Between the sender and the receiver, due to differing perceptions, communication

errors in the form of miscomprehension, selective perception etc. creep in. In this

case too, these were unavoidable, and thus might have added to slight inaccuracy

in my results.

All customers are not alike. Thus the results may not hold true for every individual

In some instances respondents may not have revealed the truth.

Page 106: Saad Ansari Project

CONCLUSION

During my summer project, I have got the topic “Sale and promotion of “Tata

Venture”. I visited responsible and authentic customer to achieve my objective and

I come to this conclusion that consumers are not fully aware about the feature of

Tata Venture . Tata Venture is favorite only for institute and hotels industry many

consumer which has family has not shown any interest. Many consumer has point

that venture has low average in comparison to Maruti Omni and Tata Indico. In my

project duration I have prepared detailed Excel Sheet of customer view about

venture thus I have also included in my project report therefore all the details are

authentic and fare and I am sure it will help for Tata Motors for improving the sales

of Tata Venture .

RECOMMENDATION

My recommendation on the basis of my project report as bellow:-

As customer are not fully aware about Tata Venture the marketing should be

done on a mass basis.

More Varity of advertisement should be shown of Tata Venture in Media as

well as in News Paper.

Some customers has point that Venture look like Tata Magic so the exterior

feature should be improved which shows a style and status.

Some new and exciting offer should be done to attract the customer to

purchase.

The driver can not adjust his posture and not fell comfort for smooth driving

hence it should be solved by the manufacturer of Venture.

Finding

My Findings

There are equal numbers of people who are self employed and in service.

During the survey I found that still there are 50% people who were not having any

passenger car.

Most of the people said Nano fits in the city traffic

During the survey I found that young people are more attractive towards feature of

the model.

I found that most of the people have a TATA company’s car.

80% people satisfy with the performance of car.

In my finding TV channel is more effective media for advertisement.

Comparison of model is more effective advertisement.

Roll.no.1112370011 Saroj Institute of Technology & Management 108

Page 109: Saad Ansari Project

Suggestions

Tata has always been a product centric company. It’s no way a consumer oriented

company. It is visible from all the passenger products it has launched. The only

advantage it enjoys presently is its first mover advantage but it can’t enable you to

sustain competitive advantage for a longer period. Nano and Indica good initiatives

but where are the looks of a passenger car. Look at the roof, the positioning of tail

lamps, indicator positioning of headlamps, no side indicator in Nano etc. the

difference between a transport vehicle and a passenger must be evident strongly.
