1 SACRED HEART C A T H O L I C S C H O O L Spring Term—Issue 2 Thursday, 18th January 2018 Dear Parents, Guardians and Students, As I write this, I am reviewing the desnaons of those students who graduated from Sacred Heart last summer, so that they can take their place on the Honours Boards in the school hall. It is an impressive list. Last year’s Year 13 have travelled far and wide to study at a wide range of top universies, from close by in London to across the Atlanc in Canada; within the UK from South- ampton and Portsmouth on the south coast to Manchester in the north-west. As an enthusiast for north-east England myself, I note that this is an area which Sacred Heart has yet to really conquer; in previous years the odd student has ventured as far north as Lancaster, and one even to Glasgow, but no-one yet to either Durham or Newcastle. Perhaps the lack of Sacred Heart input is the reason why the ‘Northern Powerhouse’ has not yet really got off the ground – something we must recfy! Shortly before Christmas, Ms Bonar held her annual ‘Meet the Undergraduate’ event, at which past pupils come back from university to talk to our current sixth formers, and we were delighted to learn that Angela Caipa Garcia (2013) is now studying for her PhD in Biochemistry at Kings, while Rodney Gold Detchebs (2014) is pursuing a Masters in Economics at Warwick, and Agatha-Chrise Onwuzuruike (2014) has graduated with first-class honours from Oxford and taken up a posion with Credit Suisse in the City. At the Sixth Form Open Evening last term, John Vu (2017) won over the audience in style, by outlining his route to studying Medicine at Kings. Sacred Heart students go far, in more ways than one! These ‘desnaons’ must seem a long way off for a pupil in Year 7, for example, but as someone who has been at Sacred Heart a very long me, I can assure those lower down in the school that the years will fly by, and their turn will quickly come to reach their full potenal and fly high, like those who have gone before them. The main ingredients for success are no secret, as any Sacred Heart graduate will tell you – ambion, perseverance and plain hard work! During the week Chrisans are remind- ed of Jesus’ prayer for his disciples that “they may be one so that the world may believe” (John 17.21). Chrisans from different churches come together to pray for their unity. Congregaons and parishes all over the world exchange preachers or arrange special celebraons and prayer services. Eternal Father, we praise you for sending your Son to be one of us and to save us. Look upon your people with mercy, for we are divided in so many ways, and give us the Spirit of Jesus to make us one in love.

Gentrification in East London….
Year 12 and 13 students spent Thursday morning studying and measuring the effects of gentrifi-cation (the buying and renovation of houses and stores in deteriorated urban neighborhoods by upper or middle-income families or individuals) in and around East London. They looked at how Spitalfields and Hackney Wick have both been subjected to gentrification and the impact this has had on the community. This was a practice investigation for Y13 who are investigating the cur-rent gentrification that is going on in Peckham and Brixton as part of their A-Level coursework.

U13 girls came first in the London Championships which
means they qualify for the next round which is regional. U13 boys are runners up in the London Championships

ADVANCE WARNING FOR YEAR 11 PARENTS EXAM ENTRY DEPOSIT REQUIRED FOR GCSE EXAMINATIONS
You will already be aware that your son/daughter will be taking their GCSE exams this year. To confirm their entry to these exams, the school requires you to pay an exam entry deposit of £50. This payment will be returnable to you, once your son/daughter has satisfactorily completed all of their coursework and exams and returned all school textbooks at the end of Year 11.
THE SCHOOL WILL NOT MAKE EXAM ENTRIES FOR YOUR SON/DAUGHTER UNLESS THE DEPOSIT HAS BEEN RECEIVED.
Please note that £50 is a small fraction of what the school has to pay to the exam board(s) – entry for a typical GCSE qualification costs around £30-£40, so a pupil taking 10 GCSEs will cost the school around £300-£400 in entry fees.
This year parents have the facility to pay the £50 exam deposit on ParentPay. We highly recommend that parents use this method of payment. The deadline by which it must be paid is Wed 31st January. Once the money is refunded back to the ParentPay account after the exams, parents can then withdraw the funds directly back onto their bank card. Alternatively, many parents choose to make the payment by cash or cheque (made payable to Sacred
Heart School) at the Year 11 Parents’ Evening on Thursday 25th January. Cash or cheques are the only
forms of payment available at the Parents Evening itself.
