SACRED HEART Summer term — Issue 12 Thursday 19th July 2018
LETTER FROM HEADTEACHER
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I write at the end of another demanding academic year at Sacred Heart. Once again, I reflect on all of the events, countless lessons, lining up and registrations each morning, and other routines that make up our school. I remember the ‘beast from the east’ and the contrast to the weather we are now experiencing. Our charity events—did we really go to Thailand this year? It now seems so long ago.
Reflecting on our pupils, I know that I, and most adults, have strong memories of school and, in particular, the impact teachers have had on our lives. I wonder how Sacred Heart will be viewed by our children when they look back on
their school years as adults—will they agree with the old adage that their school days were the best days of their lives? I hope they understand and appreciate that all efforts were made to give them good memories that influenced what they are doing today. We also hope they would have left Sacred Heart prepared to meet the sometimes cruel demands of a modern world. We have done our very best at Sacred Heart School to ensure that our children hold a positive view of themselves and are ready to approach the future with self-confidence and a robust and resilient attitude to deal with their own issues, but also to support the less fortunate peo-ple they come across. We, at Sacred Heart, in partner-ship with the parish community and yourselves, will continue to strive for this.
The exam results, we now await, will never be a sum total of what a good school achieves each year and we must never forget that Sacred heart stands for much, much more…
I wish you all a happy and safe summer break and look forward to seeing you all in the new academic year.
Mr S Cefai

Well done to everyone
involved!
Mrs Toby
Head of Mathematics
It all got quite intense on Friday 6th July with our
annual year 7 Mathletics event!
A fabulous afternoon in which all houses raced to
win the Mathletics competition. Teams of 5 battled
to answer the maths questions while the audience
made up fantastic chants and also earned points for
their House with worksheets, solving riddles, best
behaviour. It was an excellent team effort and well
done to all involved!

Two examples of excellent teamwork have dominated the news this week.
The first was an international effort to rescue a young Thai football team. It was fantastic to hear that on Tuesday, after a seventeen-day long ordeal, all twelve boys and their football coach had been rescued safely. They entered the cave system on 23rd June and due to heavy rain and flood water, their exit was blocked. Nine days later, they were discovered, but getting them out was not simple. When preparing for the rescue event, sadly, a former Thai navy diver died after delivering oxygen tanks to the boys. The rescue effort involved ninety expert divers from across the world, who worked together to help guide the boys through the narrow passages of the cave. The boys and the coach will now spend some time recovering in hospital before being reunited with their families. This story shows that with a combined effort, great things can be accomplished and lives can be saved.
The second example shows a young, committed team led by a thoughtful, nuanced and well-reasoned manager. Gareth Southgate has been an excellent ambassador for England on the world stage this month and the England team have followed suit. They won on penalties during the game against Colombia, beat Sweden during the quarter-finals but unfortunately lost to Croatia during the semi-finals on Wednesday. The training the team have undergone to get this far is admirable and their progress has had a positive effect on the country, uniting fans and communities.
We can learn lessons from these two stories and reflect on how we can be a better team member and work together with others to make our teams the best they can be. At school, we all belong to different teams: forms, houses, year groups, sports teams. Wednesday saw Magdelene take home the House Cup in assembly and allowed us to celebrate last week’s Sports Day – congratulations to everyone who supported, participated and those who received a medal. On Thursday evening, at the Year 9 Awards evening, we celebrated those students who have shown exceptional promise in their studies this year and students received prizes form departments to acknowledge their efforts. Well done to everyone involved! Ms K Whyte Assistant Headteacher

NORMANDY TRIP - JULY 2018
Last week, 39 Year 8 students went to the region of Normandy in the north-west of France for four days, along with Madam Vasquez, Madam Akhtar, Madam O’Flynn and Mr Guittet. On Monday 2nd July, we took the coach to Dover in order to cross the Channel on an amazing ferry boat, which we really enjoyed. We arrived in Normandy towards the end of the day and had our first French dinner. The locals were really nice to us and made us feel special when we arrived at our hostel. After a long day of travelling, we went to bed to rest in order to be ready for the rest of the week. On Tuesday 3rd July, we went to visit the Omaha Beach Cemetery which is a World War 2 cemetery. This is in honour of the American troops who died in Europe during the war. We then went to a 360-degree cinema where we saw a recap on D-Day. The cool thing about it is that there were screens all around and great sound effects to better feel the atmosphere of D-Day. To finish the day, we went to the Caen Peace Memorial to pay tribute to those who died in Normandy during the war.

NORMANDY TRIP - JULY 2018
On Wednesday 4th July, we went to a local market where we bought some nice local products and souvenirs for our families. We then headed to Bayeux to see the famous tapestry which is an embroidered cloth nearly 70 metres (230 feet) long and 50 centimetres (20 inches) tall. The tapestry depicts the events leading up to the Norman conquest of England concerning William, Duke of Normandy, and Harold, Earl of Wessex, later King of England, and culminating in the Battle of Hastings. It is thought to date to the 11th century, within a few years after the battle. It tells the story from the point of view of the conquering Normans.
On our last day, on Thursday 5th July, we went to a cheese factory to see how the milk is collected and then used to make cheese. Quite a new experience for most of our students! We then headed back to England! Overall, all pupils had an amazing time and are still talking about it a week later– it was a very special and memorable trip. Monsieur Guittet Head of Year 8
We then headed to a caramel factory where they make the ever so popular ‘caramel of Normandy’. To finish off the day, we went to the beach to relax, swim
in the Atlantic Ocean and enjoyed the sun!

CHESS CLUB
On Thursday 28th and Friday 29th June, 28 pupils took part in an in-house chess tournament to say farewell to Mr Jerez who is sadly leaving Sacred Heart School. The 1st and 2nd rounds, and also the quarter finals were played on
Thursday. Solomon Areoye 9M, Justin La Rosa 9M, Eden Ehioghae 9M,
Neithan Chua 7P and Regan Darkoh 8M went on to play in the semi-finals
and final on Friday.

CHESS CLUB
After a tough afternoon of semi- finals on Friday, Neithan Chua and Solomon came out on top and went on to compete against each other in the final. The final consisted of 3 rounds with 30 minutes for each game. It was fantastic to watch. The support from the other members of chess club, and also our past pupils who came back to watch, was immense.
At the end of an intense hour and a half, Solomon Areoye 9M came out on top as our
Chess Champion 2018. Solomon was our runner-up last year against a Year 13 avid
chess player and came back this year with sheer determination to be the school’s
number 1 chess player, and succeeded. We are very proud of Solomon and although
he has a busy couple of years ahead of him studying for GCSEs, we hope that he will
return to chess club in September as our chess captain.
Thank you to all the students that participated this year, it has been a pleasure to
spend every Thursday and Friday after school with you and I hope to see you all back
in September. Chess club would also like to wish Mr Jerez the very best of luck for the
future and we hope that you do not forget your Sacred Heart Chess Club.

Work Experience
Well done to the 120 Year 10 students who successfully completed work experience from
Monday 2nd July to Friday 6th July! Students completed work experience at a
variety of organisations including NatWest, Coca Cola European Partners, EDF
Energy, Westminster Abbey and many more.
Divine Emovon—Alliance UK He completed a series of tasks most of them focusing on admin and customer interaction. We believe Divine is showing good signs and certainly has individual qualities that will help him in shaping his busi-ness acumen, therefore, our feedback is positive. Amabel Cofie—LandSec She is lovely, a delightful girl. Went through objectives with her at the beginning of the week. When they estab-lished that she is creative they also got her involved with the marketing team. Has taken to the technology and has wanted to stay busy throughout, making herself very helpful. Rachel Daramola—Lonsdale & Mayall Solicitors AMAZING FEEDBACK. Rachel was delightful, polite, beautifully dressed and by far her best ever work experience student. They have really taken to her and are just overwhelmed by how amazing she was. The lady even said she is willing to offer Rachel any summer jobs in the near future and a job once she finishes university (in a few years’ time). Saron Berhane- Marks and Spencer’s, Marble Arch Saron has been outstanding they were really impressed and have given her more challenging work which she has coped with really well Randall Macapagal—Marks and Spencer (Kings College Hospital) Randall has been excellent, he has been very punctual and would have been offered a job but for his age Joshua-Jefferson Celada Flordeliz—St Anthony's RC Primary School Joshua is a very quiet and pleasant young person. He presents himself well and knows his place. He is always punctual and polite. Joshua has consistently (from his first day here) worked hard and is very thorough and what he is unsure of, he asks. Joshua is a credit to Sacred Heart and we are enjoying having him here. Vanessa Gagno, Blessing Okuchukwu, Nana Opoku, Thomas Okumu, David N'Douba, Ayokunmi Odujoko St. Joseph’s Primary School This year's Yr. 10 have been completely brilliant during their time at St Joseph's. They have acted with maturity, willing to do anything to support the children and have really helped out. Our Junior sports day on Friday at Myatt's Field was a clear example of 'how many hands make light work' - thanks to them. All the teachers and support staff want to wish them well for the future! Angel Ibeto—Scott Fleary Productions Given monetary reward at the end of placement and offered a summer job.

Work Experience
Student Feedback
‘I enjoyed being in the work environment of the hotel,
serving food and being in the kitchen environment. I was
surprised at the level of responsibility they entrusted to
me and how I was able to catch onto the tasks quite
quickly. I have learned that to be successful in the
workplace requires time and hard work as well as good
qualifications. The experience has also helped me to see
how much is required to run a business.’
Chidera Okoli—10M
I enjoyed editing and learning about the different careers within music as it helped me decide whether
this was a career I want to pursue. I have learnt to take initiative; when I was free I managed to find
additional tasks to do to make everyone’s job a bit easier. I learnt how to make myself comfortable
talking to new people so I will use this to boost my self-confidence. Additionally, I am know getting
used to longer hours and being on my feet which will be a reality for me in the working world.
Rhian Grant—10M

Work Experience
I enjoyed towing an aircraft as I got to see how the procedure is carried out. I was surprised at how much responsibility I had within such a short period of time. I got on very well with the team members and I learnt that it’s very important to have attributes such as being punctual, polite and the willingness to have fun while working. I will use my experience at Farnborough airport to hone my skills. This will hopefully lead to me becoming a successful engineer. Joseph Tegile—10P
Student Feedback
I enjoyed seeing the progress of the students as they learnt new things and experiencing the work-ing world for the first time. Being in the workplace requires a lot of independence – you done get as much assistance as you do in school. The consequences for misconduct are also harsher as you could get fired if you don’t follow the rules. I didn’t think I would be confident working in a school environment but I gained confidence working around children and formed bonds with teachers and pupils. I have learnt to be very attentive when given a task and that success in the workplace requires a variety of skills such as communication, patience, independence and confidence – not just good grades. I will use the confidence and communication skills I have gained when I go to future interviews or when I get a job. I know have a better understanding of the working which I can utilise when looking for a job Vanessa Gagno—10M

YEAR 7 HISTORIANS VISIT TO HAMPTON COURT
On the 19th and the 26th June, Year 7 pupils went on an exciting and interesting visit to Hampton Court Palace. We enjoyed a tour of the Palace which involved seeing the kitchens and halls where Henry VIII would have enjoyed his state banquets, and his apartments where he would have lived, worked and run the country. We were given a guided tour of the Chapel Royal, the Tudor monarchs private church and learnt more about the difficulties of religion during this period. Not only did we get to enjoy the splendour of such a beautiful palace, its artwork, tapestries and sense of history, we enjoyed having a picnic lunch in the wonderful gardens. A very lovely day was had by all. Mrs M Noonan
SIXTH FORM TASTER DAY
On Monday 9th July, 133 prospective Year 12 students attended a Taster Day at Sacred Heart. We were delighted to welcome so many students (more than ever before!) - we had a good mix of both internal and external students attending. The day started with registration and assembly where students gained an understanding into life at Sacred Heart, both academic and extracurricular. Then students attended lessons in their A Level subjects of choice, followed by a question and answer session at the end of the day. All that remains now is to wait for GCSE results in August, pending on these, students can attend enrolment. Please check the school website for more details about this. DUKE OF EDINBURGH BRONZE EXPEDITION—YEAR 9
On 2nd to 4th July this term, 23 Year 9 students from Sacred Heart took park in their Training and Practice Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Expedition. This took place in Ashdown Forest in Sussex, a place of beautiful scenery and rolling hills. This would have been the students’ first time map reading, navigating through the countryside, camping and cook-ing for themselves. Students walked with their large rucksacks and supplies over 10k from Broadstone Warren Scout Camp to Blackland Farm on Tuesday, and then from Blackland Farm to Ardingly Reservoir on Wednesday. This would be a challenge for any Year 9 student, but doing so in near 30-degree heat made this a really great achievement! On 17th to 18th July this year, the 23 students will complete their Qualifying Expedition, contributing the Bronze DofE award. Best of luck to all involved.

As ever, the girls team had their football trials in their first week of school. I was excited to find some great prospects, with some huge talent which could make an impact in competitions this year.
The Sacred Heart Key Stage 3 football team had another fantastic season and reached the semi-final of the Inner London Cup. This is a brilliant achievement as over 30 schools enter the competition and we managed to get down to the final 4 teams - we just lost in the semi-final by one goal! A massive congratulations to the following members of the squad:
I am particularly proud of the Year 7 players, who were often playing against teams with students who were a lot bigger and stronger, but they more than held their own and often stood out as the greater tal-ent.
Stand out talents in the team are Nehizena and Cheyenne, who are both currently applying their skills in Millwall’s Lioness Academy. There has been a crucial development in their understanding of the game and the requirements that are needed to be a success on the field. This undoubtedly helped us progress throughout the tournament. Below is their review of the season….

Year 8 Taina Carcel Halle Toulon Ruth Folorunso
Year 7 Lucy Riberio Ingrid Essome-Kwedy Adine Kamondo Dibora Dawit Danatia Sylvestre Apryl Crucido Raramos Daniela Adanemhen
“Girls football, this year, has been phe-nomenal. We have not only improved as a school by reaching the semi-finals but as a team. Playing with these wonderful young ladies on my team has been excep-tional. There are many talented players on our team that have massively improved over the year”.
“Training as a team has developed our match skills. It has helped me grow as an individual, learning new techniques every match. Many foot-ballers on our team have been play-ing for the Sacred Heart for 3 years. Every match we have played since year 7, we have enhanced and become better, thanks to Madam Roberts.”
“Many matches throughout the season have been labori-ous and hard, but we still managed to push through it as a family. That’s why I believe girls football is so great. This year we have really excelled in our defence. It has been really strong with Elizabeth Lakoh. Our midfield all year has been amazing with Nehziena holding it together. The strikers, Nia Dominique and Cheyenne Faulkner, have been scoring lots of goals.
A quote from the player of the year,
“girls football this year has truly been
amazing, I have not only grown as a
player but as an individual. I’ve learnt
things I never thought I could and
that’s down to hard work and perse- Madam Roberts
