Barnyard Buddies$9 per child Duration: 90 minutesIn the company of Mr. or Mrs. Farmer, little ones meet sheep, goats, pigs, chickens, and rabbits. Children discover the smells and sounds of the farm, touch the animals’ soft coats, sing, make crafts, and listen to a farm tale.

Meet the Farm AnimalsJK to Grade 2 / Preschool and Elementary Cycle 1 $9 per student Duration: 90 minutesCome smell, touch, listen, and observe farm animals – up close and personal! Whether rabbit, chicken, honeybee or cow, each animal has its own characteristics and needs. Let your students explore the animals’ environments, their lifecycles and why we raise them. Students also have the chance to handle some farming tools.

Butter MakingJK to Grade 3 / Preschool and Elementary Cycle 1 $9 per student Duration: 90 minutesIn the Dairy Barn, students meet the calves and cows. Then, they learn the characteristics of mammals, discover where milk comes from, and handle old-fashioned dairy equipment. In one of the museum’s laboratories, students transform cream into butter – ready to be spread and tasted.
Busy BeesJK to Grade 3 / Preschool to Elementary Cycle 2 $9 per student Duration: 90 minutesIn this interactive workshop, students discover the important role bees play in pollination, as well as the dangers they face. Students handle beekeeping tools, taste different types of honey, and watch bees at work in the museum’s observation hive.
The Need to KneadGrades 1 and 3 / Elementary Cycles 1 and 2 $9 per student Duration: 2 hoursWant to make some dough? Just like The Little Red Hen, students have the chance to thresh the wheat, grind the seed into flour, sniff the yeast, knead the dough, and taste a loaf – fresh out of the oven! Students also explore how to grow wheat and handle old-fashioned farming tools.
Discover the Barns Grade 3 and up / Elementary Cycle 2 and up $9 per student Duration: 90 minutesExplore the museum’s barns and meet a wide range of farm animals, from the tiny domestic honeybee to the gigantic Clydesdale horse. Through this introduction to agriculture, students learn about animal husbandry and where food comes from. They also learn about various careers in the agri-food sector, and the roles that science and technology play in today’s agricultural industry.
Properties of, and Changes in Matter: BreadGrade 5 / Elementary Cycle 3 $9 per student Duration: 2 hoursExplore changes in matter by transforming grains of wheat into a delicious loaf of bread. Students learn key bread-making processes, including fermentation, protein coagulation, and starch gelatinization. At the same time, students discover that a kitchen is, after all, a wonderful science lab!

PumpkinsJK to Grade 1 / Preschool and Elementary Cycle 1 $9 per student Duration: 90 minutes September 24 to October 31, 2018It’s harvest time! Come and learn all about pumpkins, a symbol of fall. Listen to a story, take part in pumpkin experiments, and explore the origins of fall traditions. After learning the characteristics of the plant and its fruit, each student brings a small pumpkin back to class.
A Handful of SoilJK to Grade 1 / Preschool and Elementary Cycle 1 $9 per student Duration: 90 minutes May 1 to June 14, 2019It’s easy to forget that soil is teaming with life. With your students, dig into the ground and discover the creatures hiding there. Students learn the characteristics of earthworms, sow seeds, study the germination of plants, and make a germination necklace to take back to class.
Chill OutGrade 1 to 3 / Elementary Cycles 1 and 2 $9 per student Duration: 90 minutes May 1 to June 14, 2019In the Dairy Barn, students learn where milk and cream come from, and handle old-fashioned dairy tools. After meeting the dairy cows, the students get started on experiments with a very refreshing result: homemade ice cream!
Sheep Shearing FestivalJK to Grade 3 / Preschool to Elementary Cycle 2 $11 per student May 16 and 17, 2019 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.The museum’s annual sheep extravaganza is an unforgettable experience! Watch sheep being shorn, make felt, card wool, meet a lamb up close, and watch sheepdogs in action – these are just a few of the activities students can try at hands-on stations!

Agriculture and the EnvironmentGrades 7 to 9 and Grades 11 and 12 / Secondary Cycle 2 $9 per student Duration: 2 1/2 hoursWhat better place than a working farm to explore the impact of modern agriculture on the environment? In the museum’s barns, students take part in various cooperative activities, using critical thinking skills as they try to find solutions to some of the thorny issues surrounding agriculture and the environment.
Genetics and BiotechnologyGrades 11 and up / Secondary Cycle 2 and up $9 per student Duration: 2 1/2 hoursHow are genetics and biotechnology used in agriculture? What is their impact on the environment? This highly-interactive program gives students an opportunity to apply their knowledge of heredity and genomics to improving the genetics of the museum’s dairy herd. Students also explore how genetic engineering has transformed farming practices, and continues to push the boundaries of farming in the future.

Buddy RabbitEnjoy a face-to-face visit with a rabbit, and pet its soft fur. Are all rabbits the same? What do they need? What’s a hare and where does it live? Does it have predators? Students explore these questions through games and investigations.
Henrietta HenIt’s hard to believe that the tiny Serama chicken is a distant relative of the terrifying Tyrannosaurus Rex! Hear the cock crow, touch the hen’s soft feathers, and watch them peck. Through fun educational activities, students explore the characteristics, needs, and behaviour of this barnyard star.
From Sheep to SweaterWhat is a sheep? What are the responsibilities of shepherds and sheepdogs? How did pioneers turn a sheep’s fleece into clothing? This flexible program allows students to explore the properties of wool through fun activities.

General Information
Planning your visitWe strongly recommend the following minimum ratios for student supervision (by adults) when visiting the museum:
Student-Adult Level Ratio
K to Grade 8 Preschool to Secondary Cycle 1 6 : 1
Grades 9 and up Secondary Cycle 2 and up 10 : 1
Please remember that the museum is also a demonstration farm, complete with the miracle of new life and working machinery. Supervision during free time — or with an independent visit — is essential to creating a safe and fun atmosphere at the museum. Students and accompanying adults should also dress appropriately for farm and weather conditions.
Accompanying adults fee: $1 per adult (excluding teachers)
Parking fees: $3 per hour, $8 daily maximum (free for buses)
The museum reserves the right to limit the number of extra accompanying adults. Teachers and designated supervisors are expected to remain with their students at all times.
How to find the museumThe Canada Agriculture and Food Museum is located on the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa. The entrance to the museum parking lot is located on Prince of Wales Drive, south of the traffic circle. All buses must use this entrance.
Programs are offered weekdays from September to June, and start between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Some programs can be shortened to suit your requirements. All of the museum’s educators are experts in adjusting the content to your class.
Reserving your visitConsult the list of programs and make your selection. Please note all program fees do not include applicable taxes. Reserve as early as possible to avoid disappointment — we recommend a minimum of one month in advance.
