RIBBON CUTTING HELD AT TOMMy’S BBQ & CATERING

Are you like me and upset that people litter our highways and our private property? This is a very serious problem in our County. It does not need to be that way!

In the past year the Robeson County Clean and Green Com-mittee has been formed to tackle this litter problem. The group consists of concerned citizens and officials in Robeson County. Recently, the committee dis-covered that the state of North Carolina has several programs that citizens, businesses and civic organizations can use to make our County cleaner.

The First is Adopt a Highway- Volunteers agree to keep a 2 mile section of street or highway clean for 4 years. In return, the NCDOT post signs at each end of the adopted section with the groups name to show its partici-pation in the program. Trash is picked up on both sides of the road 4 times a year and when notified the NCDOT will pick up the trash collected. Of the 1700 roads in Robeson County only 51 roads have been adopted to date. For more details on this program please go to www.ncdot.gov/~adopt-a-highway or call our local coordinators at 910-618-5546.

Litter Sweep-is a statewide ini-tiative that occurs twice a year in April and September. The dates are April 16-30th and Sept 17-Oct 1. Volunteers are provided clean up supplies such as orange trash bags, gloves, and orange safety vest from their respective local NCDOT County maintenance office. Call your local coordina-tors at 910-618-5546 and get your group or business involved. Don’t forget Earth Day is April 22nd.

Swat-A-Litterbug program- is an educational effort admin-istered by NCDOT, Office of Beautification and NC Highway Patrol. In order to communicate to motorists who litter (litter-

bugs), we as citizens are being asked to assist by educating those that litter by reporting them to the NCDOT and NC Highway Patrol. There are several ways to do this. You can go on line to report a litter bug at www.ncdot.gov/~litterbug, you can mail in a Swat-A-Litterbug card now avail-able at the Lumberton Chamber of Commerce, or you can call the Office of Beautification at 877-368-4968. In our County by phon-ing *47 which is our highway patrol you can report litterbugs, with their NC license number, date, time and County, City, and Street. The litterbug will be noti-fied, informed of the penalties for littering, and urged to stop lit-tering with a letter from the NC Highway Patrol.

As well as taking action, com-munication is the key. The Robe-son County Clean and Green Committee has designed signs that citizens, businesses and civic groups can post on their property to let those littering that they are being watched and at risk of fines if they continue to litter. These signs can be purchased from Shackelford Signs for a reason-able price of just $25. Call 910-738-6116.

What can you do? Get involved in any of these programs. Com-municate theses programs in your workplace and to your family and friends. Also post the signs wher-ever you can. Encourage people to keep their trash and throw it away in trash cans. Remember, if you bought it, you own it! It is now your responsibility to be the role model and dispose your trash appropriately and not on some-one else’s property.

Let’s all work to get and main-tain Robeson County Clean and Green!!

NEWS & BULLETIN LUMBERTON AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE4 April 2016

The Lumberton Area Chamber Leadership Institute has gotten off to a great start. The first meeting was on February 25th, 2016. Seven busi-ness, industry and professional lead-ers have enrolled in the class.

The morning session was led by Kim Pevia, owner of K.A.P Innerpriz-es. She presented a very informative session on the history of leadership theory and leadership dynamics.

Greg Cummings, Robeson County Economic Development Director began the afternoon session. He gave the group an overview of economic development in Robeson County. He also passed out brochures used to recruit industry to Robeson County.

The day ended on a high note with a tour of Georgia Pacific led by plant manager Chuck Oxendine and Mark Griffin. Mr. Oxendine brought in his management team to meet the class and give an overview of their duties and responsibilities prior to a power point presentation. The power point was very informative in that it showed a link between Lumberton NC and other countries in the world. Georgia Pacific has clients on other continents such as Brazil, China, Etc. Mr. Griffin then personally took the class on a guided tour of the plant and showed the product in raw state through the finished product.

The next class was History & Cul-ture led by Bob Fisher. The group toured the Robeson County History Museum, The Carolina Civic Center, The Proctor Building, The African American Culture Center and Bi-Centennial Park. The afternoon class was facilitated by Latricia Freeman, Executive Director of United Way. She gave a most informative program on United Way and the many projects they do and then took the group to a few of the agencies they support. The first stop was The Southeast-ern Family Violence Center, 4-H and The Boys and Girls Club. Each agency explained their mission and how United Way assist them in their everyday goals.

The group still has several classes so stay tuned.

Mark Griffin of Georgia Pacific with the leadership group.
