INTRODUCTION
In his paintings, sculptures, and installations, the artist draws inspiration from his upbringing in Italy’s cultural landscape and in the Architecture’s work environment of New York City, engaging with history and modernism. His pieces are often a reinterpretation and re-visitation of art movements from classical to contemporary times. His projects transform the remnants of a dysfunctional and wasteful culture, revealing its inherent problems as well as reclaiming the latent aesthetic potential within industrial, natural, ecological and construction ruins and fragments. Often using laborious fabrication processes, Umberto reflects on society’s "endangered virtues" through the handcrafted production and intimate quality of his works, ironic and critical but always reaching to the depths of mankind’s soul and purpose, life and death, time and space, joy and suffering. Proportions, perspective, geometries, viewpoints, contrast, materials, textures and patterns, colors, light and shadow are always present in his compositions. His search and his efforts seem to lead, in recent projects, to the idea of “nature as imitation of art” coexisting with “art as imitation of nature”.
