As the weather warms up we will be spending more time outdoors (walks in the neighbourhood, trips to the park, rail trail walks). Since it rains quite a bit in Spring, please make sure that your child has a pair of indoor shoes.
Please remember that there is NO SCHOOL on May 18th (Victoria Day).
Please remember to visit our blog often to see what we are doing in the classroom. You can subscribe with your email address and be automatically updated when new blogs are posted. Come check us out at: http://kinderkorner.commons.hwdsb.on.ca /
A look back at AprilIn Language, we reviewed the letters T, U, V
and W. We focussed on rhyming words
specifically the “ap” and “at” family words. The
children really enjoyed watching and listening
to stories on the Smart board as well, playing
interactive word games.
We are also learning sounding out strategies
to identify beginning and middle sounds in
words. Using our letter “W,” focus the Kinder’s
have created a list of W words that they know
and have found while reading and listening to
different stories.
In Math, we have been exploring money. The children are able to identify coins and the
value for each coin. We are using coin values to help us represent numbers to thirty.
Using various coins the children used linking cubes to build the value of their coins. Using
addition, the children were able to count all the cubes in total to determine how much money
(in cents) they had altogether.
In Science, we discussed and investigated signs of Spring. Through natural curiosity and
inquiry, the Kinders have taken our “Living and Non-living” science unit to a whole new level!
Our Inquiry focus which has been student led is, “What makes people, animals, and plants
living?” and “What people, animals, and plants need to survive?”
Some students have begun to develop their own “I WONDER” questions and some have
started the next phase in their own learning. Stay Tuned!!
