The Conqueror (FV214) was a post-wardevelopment for a British heavy tank to counter thethreat posed by the Soviet JS-3. Accordingly it wasequipped with a 120mm main gun with 2 auxiliarymachine guns. It was very heavily armouredresulting in a low top speed but had good cross-country performance. It carried a crew of 4 – withthe driver located in the hull, the gunner and loaderlocated in the main body of the turret, and thecommander located in a separate fire control centre.
Conqueror was powered by a Rolls-Royce MeteorM120 V-12 27 litre petrol engine coupled to a 5speed gearbox, 5 forward and 2 reverse, and had atop speed of 21 mph.
Under 200 Conquerors were built. They wereintroduced into service in 1955 and were used toaugment the firepower of armoured regimentsstationed in Germany equipped with Centuriontanks.
