MURAL GOING UP! If you’ve walked down Glen Road recently you may have no ced that the ba ening has gone up ready for moun ng our community mural, courtesy of Barts Health Trust, one of the partners along with PSBL and LBN. We’ve also been busy behind the scenes. Led by the Council’s Plaistow Community Neighbourhood officer Syed Haque, a team of volunteers and staff triple-varnished the 75 panels in February and March. PSBL then put out a plea for a friendly contractor to take on the massive job of moun ng them. And we’re so pleased and grateful to say that Thomas Sinden Limited has come up trumps for us.

The company is a privately owned Essex based contractor currently celebra ng it’s 25th trading year, undertaking construc on work in the educa on, housing, health care and private sectors. Their spokesperson said “Having recently delivered expansion works at both East Ham Town Hall and Southern Road Primary School for Newham Council we are delighted to be able to assist PSBL in this community ini a ve.” As we go to press we’re working together to plan the moun ng which will be followed during the summer by a formal launch event. Keep an eye on our Facebook page and website, or ask to join our Forum e-mail list, for the invita on!

BLOOMIN’ PLAISTOW 2017 As we go to press we’re running our 2017 front garden compe on, “Bloomin’ Plaistow”, which has a deadline for nomina ons just before distribu on starts.

You may recall last year’s compe on which received over 20 nomina ons and culminated in an awards event at Plaistow Fire Sta on. The PSBL Steering Group will be vo ng on the 2017 nomina ons at it’s 6th July mee ng, and award winners will be announced at the Plaistow Market Place Fes val (see front page and page 9 for details) in Plaistow Park on Saturday 22nd July. Come along and find out which garden, hanging basket or window box display has won. You might get some inspira on for how to make a floral splash in your front-of-house space!

LITTERING AND FLY-TIPPING The Council’s approach

Newham Council knows that clean streets are very important to residents and that most people dispose of their waste responsibly. We provide a rubbish collection once a week, which is twice as often as many London councils. We also provide a chargeable bulky waste collection that has the quickest response time in London.

Weekly Collections

The weekly collection is for general household waste and recycling waste in orange lidded bins.

To find out your collection day please visit my.newham.gov.uk/maps and enter your postcode.

Bulky waste collections

Bulky items such as mattresses, sofas and television of up to six items a time can be collected from your home. This service is chargeable. To book a bulky waste collection, please visit www.newham.gov.uk/bulkywaste

You can also take unwanted items to the Jenkins Lane Re-use and Recycling centre, Beckton, IG11 0AD. You must bring your council tax statement or driving licence as proof of residence.

The Law on Waste

It is a criminal offence to leave, drop or throw waste and litter on the pavement or road other. If you live on a main road that has timed collections, you must only place waste on the pavement or road at the time and place permit-ted. Any waste we find will be investigated and we will take action against any person who unlawfully deposits waste.

You must also ensure that if you pass waste to anyone else other than the council for disposal, that you check that they are authorised and registered to carry and dispose of waste.

You can check if they are authorised by visiting www.environment-agency.gov.uk/publicregister

If you deposit litter you may be issued with a fixed penalty notice of £80

If you unlawfully deposit waste (fly tip) you may receive a fixed penalty notice of £400 or if prosecuted a fine of up to £50,000

Reporting dumped waste

If you witness any person illegally dumping waste in your area, please report it at www.newham.gov.uk/asb

Please provide as much information as possible including a description of the person and if a vehicle is involved, a registration number along with a make, model and colour where possible.

You can also report dumped waste via the Love Newham App or on 020 8430 2000 Some recent sights of south Plaistow - it doesn’t have to be like this!

5 Plaistow South Big Local newsle er Issue No.11 - Summer 2017

Earlier in the year PSBL’s Steering Group invited John Cushion who heads up the Council’s ‘Fly Tip Task Force’ to one of our mee ngs to discuss how we can work together to tackle the ongoing problem of rubbish on the streets of south Plaistow.

The new Task Force is now up and running and we think there has already been an improvement. LBN has allocated £1 million to expand the current team to 15 staff. There will be increased use of covert vehicles and cameras to catch perpetrators, including organised crime elements (mostly in Beckton area). 2911 fixed penalty no ces were issued last year, and li ering prosecu ons are up too. PSBL members urged them to tackle landlords clearing out proper es for new tenants, and pointed out some local hotspots See ar cle on adjacent page for more about LBN’s approach.

We recognise that tackling li er is a whole community issue. Whilst we pay our Council Tax, and can expect a

decent service from the Council, in these cash-strapped mes we must do all we can to help. PSBL has just held it’s first ‘Community Li er-Pick’ (too late to feature in this issue) and plans more at strategic places in the coming months. We gather as many volunteers as possible and spend a couple of hours clearing a visibly li ered area. These aim to draw a en on to the problem, and make a one-off visible impact on our environment.

We’ve also been circula ng our “Love where you live” poster (see above) for some me. If you’d like a copy for your window, or for a friendly local shop, just give us a call.

Would you like to join us on a li er-pick? Or perhaps even head-up this area of PSBL’s work? If so, please get in touch (see back page for contact info).

LITTER YE NOT!

PYM – GROWING FASTER THAN EXPECTED Here we are again, two markets have passed since our last newsle er and we have so much to tell you.

With our Winter market been such a success, we decided to hold a similar one in Spring. Now that the students, which you may have met in December, had learned the principles of having a market stalls they focused their energy towards developing be er products. We are so proud of their accomplish-ments and hope these experiences will help them in the future.

Cumberland school had their first stalls at our Spring market: one business selling African print hair accessories (one of the winners of the Cumberland-PSBL Dragon's Den) and the other, selling plants grown by young pupils.

But that is not the only reason we improve with every market. Our lovely team of event organisers is constantly finding ways to make the market be er for visitors and traders and, last but not

least, our amazing volunteers, without whom the market would not exist, came up trumps again.

Our most recent market on the Greenway had around 1000 visitors despite the rain we got at the end. Again, two stalls were hosted by Cumberland students, one winner of Dragon's Den selling halal sweets and the LGBT+ Pride Network with a photo booth.

PSBL decided to invest in a generator so you can enjoy the lovely hot food our traders provide at our outdoors markets too.

Our next market will be on Saturday 22nd July in Plaistow Park, from 11am to 3pm. This market is part of a new event called Plaistow Market Place Fes val - an ini a ve of PSBL in collabora on with LBN meant to celebrate all that is amazing in our area. Come along and enjoy a day with your loved ones.

A er that, we’ll have one further market this year, a Winter market on Saturday 2nd December 2017 at NewVIC College.

Help us do be er by sending your feed-back to our Youth Enterprise Worker, Lora:

[email protected] or visit our Facebook page: h ps://www.facebook.com/PlaistowYouthMarket/

If you would like to take part, as a trader or a volunteer, please contact Lora.

This is a fantas c way to meet new people, gain new skills and have a great

me.

7 Plaistow South Big Local newsle er Issue No.11 - Summer 2017

Last December we decided to start a Dragon’s Den compe on for all students in year 10 at Cumberland School. Each class had to choose one business to go forward and face the judges.

There was a promise of investment from PSBL of up to £500 - so the stakes

were high!

With ideas from glowing trees to 3D prin ng, it was not easy to make a decision, but in February we chose 4 businesses in which to invest.

One of those businesses hosted a stall at our Spring market selling the African

print hair accessories. Another one had a stall at our May market selling halal sweets and they sold out.

Each business will have a mentor and up to £500 to start their journey. We wish them good luck and hope to see them in Fortune 500 one day.

DRAGON’S DEN @ CUMBERLAND SCHOOL

PHOTO BOOTH - CUMBERLAND SCHOOL LGBT+ PRIDE YOUTH NETWORK Trading for the first me at our market were new star traders from Cumber-land School. The LGBT+ team started just 4 months before our last market, but they decided to host a stall just the day before! They say: “It was literally last minute.” Kelsey had photography skills as she was studying photography for her GCSEs, and that helped them decide to host a Costume Photo booth.

“We started the day with no change for £5 pounds and at the end of the day we could change a £50 note” they said. The group now offers ps for others wan ng to try it: "Make sure you have change, also have examples of picture size so customers will see how their photo will look printed".

Kelsey says “I think we made people happy”. Lora’s response was “you definitely made me happy; your posi ve energy filled my heart with love and happiness!”

Zack, another member of the group, is amazed how despite their anxiety “we could all go in the big wide world and speak with strangers, this is a huge step for all of us and now we know we can all do it and we want to keep doing it”.

Vilija says “We made money, were given pizza, and we got to meet the other traders.”

They were not just traders - at the end they helped dy up and pack all equipment. “We couldn’t just leave” they said.

A er the market they were sad it was finished, they had so much fun and can't wait for the next one. The Photo Booth has been hired by PSBL to offer free services at Plaistow Market Place Fes val. Find them on the 22nd July in Plaistow Park!

A partnership between Plaistow Community Neighbourhood & Plaistow South Big Local

A PLAISTOW FESTIVAL? PSBL has ini ated a partnership with Newham Council and a range of local groups and organisa ons to plan the Plaistow Summer Market Place Fes val (see adjacent panel and front page).

We would like this to be the first of an annual celebra on of all things Plaistow, with events spread across a week each July and across the Plaistow area.

Perhaps your centre, school, faith group, community organisa on or residents group would like to join the Fes val partnership to begin thinking about making this a reality for July 2018. Could your organisa on run/host a cultural or arts evening, a sports event, an open day to showcase your work and ac vi es, or something else? Or would you, as an individual, like to play a lead role in making such a fes val happen?

It’s early days, of course, but it would be good to set down some markers for our aspira ons for next year - it’s surprising how quickly a year goes when we all have our daily work to get on with!

If you would like to have an ini al chat about possibili es, please contact Denny or Simon at PSBL via [email protected]

10 Plaistow South Big Local newsle er Issue No.11 - Summer

Our long-term plans are to work with Rights and Equali es in Newham (REIN) to carry out a major re-vamp of their youth facility “The Mix”, at the top end of Cumberland Road, to turn it into a mul -purpose community hub resource. We’re about to commission a joint feasibility study into the possibil-i es.

Meanwhile, we’re working with REIN to give the centre a bit of a make-over so we can trial some new ac vi es and

ideas.

A er an unfortunate last minute corporate volunteer cancella on, the REIN-PSBL team decided to con nue with plans to spruce up the centre. On Monday 5th June, with kind dona on of funding for materials from the corporate team at Ci bank, along with gorgeous plants/veg from Sewells of Plaistow, and five willing people we demonstrated that 'everything is PoSsiBLe'!

We are very pleased with the results so far and hope to be able to provide a wider range of services and training in the months ahead. ELBA (East London Business Alliance) are suppor ng our venture and will con nue to work with us in order to make our dream a reality.

Do you have ideas for how this centre can become a focus for community life? Are their ac vi es you’d like to get going? Get in touch!

GREEN SPACES WORKER

MIX MAKEOVER

As we go to press we’re in the process of recrui ng a part- me staff member to focus on our “Greening Plaistow” and “Plaistow Streets” priori es.

If all goes to plan, we’ll be appoin ng someone with the passion and skill-set to help residents, other volunteers and

partner organisa ons carry out make-overs on local green spaces and make a posi ve difference to south Plaistow streets and blocks. We also have grants available to groups of residents of up to £2500 to cover costs of these projects, and some corporate partners bring addi onal funds!

The 2-day a week worker will also lead in developing the “Bloomin’ Plaistow” compe on.

Get in touch if you have an idea to improve your street or a nearby green space.

SUPPORTING LOCAL ACTION FUND—GRANTS FOR LOCAL GROUPS PSBL has a small grants programme to support local groups and organisa ons address the needs in our Priori es (see page 2). Your group doesn’t need to be a cons tuted organisa on. You could be just a group of local residents who want to make a posi-

ve change on a need or issue.

So far we’ve awarded over £18000 to projects including catering training for young lone parents, youth performances, computer training resources, domes c violence aware-ness for young Asian women, development of a charity shop, and leather goods workshops for young people.

CHARITY SHOP VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Alternatives Trust East London has taken over the Creations shop at 66 Prince Regent Lane and is planning to run it as a Charity Shop – giving volunteering experience to some of our mums as they are moving forwards from difficult situations in their lives.

It will open properly in September as ‘We Are Family Charity Shop’ and plans to be open from 10am – 3pm from Tuesday to Saturday, and is just getting going at this point in time.

We are looking for volunteers to support the small team we currently have. If you are interested please email [email protected] for a volunteer form and more infor-mation.

Most helpful for us are people who can commit to a specific time each week – even if only for 2 hours a week we would be very pleased to hear from you. If you already have experi-ence of retail work and of working with/managing volunteers and would like to help us in an overseeing role we would be very keen to hear from you!
