The Lady Flames are 2-1 all-time in conference tournament play against High Point. The Panthers defeated Liberty, 3-0, in the 2010 Big South Volleyball Championship final. This season, on Oct. 11 at the Vines Center, High Point led Liberty, 2-0, and 19-13 in set three, before the Lady Flames rallied to stun the Panthers in a five-set thriller. High Point then downed Liberty, 3-1, at the Millis Center on Nov. 7.

2013 Championship Recap Liberty, serving as the fourth seed and two-time defending champion, opened the 2013 Big South Volleyball Championship with a 3-1 quarterfinal win over No. 5 seed UNC Asheville. Caroline Douglas led all players with 17 kills. The Lady Flames then staged an epic battle with top seed Radford in the semifinal, as the eventual champion Highlanders won a marathon fifth set, 21-19, to advance to the final against Coastal Carolina. Liberty had five match-point tries in set five, while Radford cashed in on its third clinching chance. Rachel Wiechecki sent down a match-high 27 kills for Radford, while Lillie Happel scored 18 kills for Liberty.

2014 Highlights Liberty sped to a 22-5 record to start the season, thanks in part to a 13-match win-ning streak, from Sept. 20 through Oct. 25. The Lady Flames started out the conference schedule at 9-0, the best start to Big South play in program history. Since then, Liberty has gone 1-4 to finish out a 23-9 regular-season campaign, including 10-4 in Big South play. On Sept. 23, the Lady Flames picked up a big, 3-2 win over Virginia, Liberty’s first vic-tory against the Cavaliers since 1979, a span of 30 meetings. 11th-year head coach Shane Pinder became Liberty’s winningest volleyball coach on Oct. 3, recording his 199th career coaching victory. Liberty is 14-1 when winning the first set this season, while going 9-8 in matches after losing the first session. The Lady Flames have now posted 10 or more Big South victories in seven out of the last eight seasons. First to 20 With their 3-1 win at Coastal Carolina on Oct. 18, the Lady Flames secured their 20th win to improve to 20-5 on the season. It marks the team’s seventh 20-win season in the last eight years, 14th since joining the Big South and 21st in program history. The Lady Flames reached 20 wins faster than any other Liberty volleyball team since joining the Big South in 1991. It took the 2008 team 26 matches to earn win No. 20.

Stepping Up Junior Jade Vorster has been Liberty’s leading hitter over the last four matches of the regular season, averag-ing 3.86 kills while hitting .408. She has reached double-figures in kills in four straight matches, including a ca-reer-high 16 kills at High Point. Freshman Gabrielle Vess averages 2.43 kills per set over that span, sending down a season-high 12 kills at Campbell.

10+-Club Freshman Gabrielle Vess sent down a career-high 12 kills at Campbell, last Saturday, becoming the 10th cur-rent Lady Flame with at least one career 10-kill match. Caroline Douglas scored a career-high 29 kills versus CCSU, Sept. 12. Additional Lady Flames and their colle-giate career highs in kills: Maribeth Kern (23 - while at King (Tenn.)); Hannah Weidner (19); Jade Vorster (16); Nzea McQuitery (15); Sirena Vorster (14); Haley Jeffcoat (13); Melissa Racz (12); Susan Babcock (11).

Sister, Sister Junior Jade Vorster and freshman Sirena Vorster both joined the Lady Flames’ roster this season. Jade Vorster was a two-time All-Big West honoree while playing for na-tionally-ranked Hawai’i. The Vorsters are the first pair of sisters to compete for the Liberty volleyball team since Alysson and Kirstyn Sanders in 2007.

Big Match Redshirt junior Caroline Douglas scored a career-high 29 kills on Sept. 12 against Central Connecticut. Her 29 kills were the most by a Lady Flame since Rachel Harnack recorded a program rally-scoring-record 40 kills at Coastal Carolina, Nov. 10, 2001.

Dishing it Out Junior Caila Stapleton dished out a career-high 63 assists against Central Connecticut on Sept. 12. Her 63 assists were the most by a Lady Flame since Courtney Boggs had 64 at UNC Asheville, Nov. 7, 2008. On Sept. 26 against Radford, Stapleton collected a career-high 25 digs, the most by a Liberty setter since Kal-lie Corbin had 25 on Sept. 15, 2007 versus Binghamton.

Dig In The Lady Flames have had a total team effort on de-fense this year, with 10 different players recording at least one 10-dig match.
