TRANSPORT

Your first TRANSPORT, was it by PRAM, Then, maybe, later in a TRAM? Thousands love riding on a HORSE, The "Well to do" a CARRIAGE, of course.

Many's the time we've made a fuss, When waiting ages for a BUS So use a CYCLE, and even HIKE Or weave your way on a MOTORBJKE.

COACH holidays now take us far But many would rather use their CAR, Whilst adverts tell us "Go by TRAIN" Others prefer to use a PLANE.

Hot air BALLOON, or even GLIDER, Choice of TRANSPORT gets ever wider, Those in a hurry to go abroad, Will, quite naturally use CONCORDE.

So there you have it.. ... OH DEAR ME! I quite forgot TRANSPORT BY SEA!

Sincerely Roger Howells

SALTFORD PARISH COUNCIL NEWS Clerk to the Council - Mrs M L M Sabey, 489, Bath Road, Salfford, Bristol BSJI JBA

Tel: 01225 4()()()58 A4 BATH ROAD As a result of a special Parish Meeting on 16th November, the following requests for improvements to the A4 for local residents have been put forward to B&NES Council (which will be taking over responsibility for this road from April 2(00) Junction Improvements - At Beech RdlManor Rd; Grange Road; Norman Road. Requests for roundabouts and widening of the exits leading on to these junctions. Saltford Hill Safety - a pedestrian crossing point, controlled by lights, or at least a pedestrian refuge. Measures to prevent cars mounting the pavement opposite The Shallows. General Speed Reduction Measures for quieter periods: more prominent 30 mph signs and raised strips (as have been installed on the road going into Keynsham by Wellsway School); continued pressure on Highways Agency to provide speed camera and signs; use of the mobile speed warning sign. Relief Road/Bypass - placing on record this Council's request for this to be pursued as part of a regional transport strategy, particularly in view of the likely effects of the Bristol Ring Road being completed and increasing housing BristollBath/Keynsham.

All of these requests wiU be passed on to B&NES Council for consideration and comment - what can be put into effect will depend on the technical feasibility, the likely benefits to local traffic and on the A4, and finance available. B&NES council will be presenting its own proposals to the Parish Council based on this list and comments made at the public meeting, before deciding what measures can be taken in future.

QUESTIONNAIRE Thank you to all residents who completed the questionnaire on the back page of the last edition of SCAN. The comments are being analysed and the result wilJ be reported back in due course. SaJtford Floral Club Liz Griffiths was welcomed to the club at the end of September when she gave a superb demonstration entitled ·Nature's Every Fair Device". For so many of us, it was a golden opportunity to catch up with Liz and her husband Keith on all their "happenings" since leaving this area to return once more to Devon. Saltford Floral Club will once again decorate Saltford HaJJ in preparation for the many Christmas Festivities, and will participate in the SCA Christmas Fayre on 4th December with the usual display of Dried and Fresh Christmas arrangements. At the last Practice Class of th.e year Margaret Bayliss showed us how to make a Spice Posy - a typical and traditional approach to the Festive Season as it's lovely fragrance permeates the room.

On November 51h, we had a complete Day School with Margaret Baker who instructed us in the assembling of a 'Pot Pourri" Bombe and a "Topiary Tree .. . " Christmas gifts with nearest and dearest perhaps in mind? but No, when completed at the end of the day, these would wander no farther that our own homes! We were so thrilled and delighted with the end results that quite honestly, there were very few who wanted to part with their completed efforts. One and all agreed that these delightful gifts were to be for "home use" only! These were going to be for us! The Christmas Demonstration was held on November 23rd when there were Sales tables with holly, ivy, ribbons, flowers and robins etc. and Shirley Preston's title for the day was "It's Christmas". The afternoon was completed with hot mince pies and a cup of tea as an early introduction to Christmas 1999, the last of this century! The committee and Members wish you all the Joy, Peace and Happiness of Christmas as well as Good Wishes for the New Year ahead. We hope that some of you will come to our AGM on the 25th January 2000 or at least to the first demonstration on 22nd February at 2.15 pm at SaItford Hall. We shall all be delighted to welcome you. Sybil Showering.

Saltford Evening W.1. Jill Cornelius was re-elected President at the Annual General Meeting in October. Jean Brown, the Secretary, retired after seven years in the job, and Julie Selman was elected in her place. Several committee members resigned and some new ones were elected so we just about have a working committee; a good thing as much is planned for the future. There are several new members and a vibrant feel to meetings. A good programme of speakers is arranged for year 2000. In November, it was a members evening and many and varied hobbies and skills were on display with delicate lace, patchwork. painting, a talking book for the blind and even foot massage shown, which made for a lively and interesting meeting. December 8th A visit to Redgrave Theatre Bristol is booked to see • Alice through the Looking Glass" and there are still some spare seats. December 17th Walk around Newton St Loe is planned, with lunch afterwards at the Globe Inn, Newton St Loe. Next Meeting December 14th is Party night with an American Supper. . Members are asked to bring food, and Knife, fork and spoon.

Saltford Afternoon Townswomens' Guild Time flies! What have we been doing this year as the century draws to a close?

Nothing earth shattering but nevertheless we have had some pleasant meetings, outings and coffee mornings. All helping us to stay optimistic. This year we had three coffee mornings which gave us plenty of opportunity for chattering and enjoying each others company. In September we had our Ploughman's Lunch in aid of our charity. It was very well attended and we made over £200 for RNID. It really is important that we work together as a team. Our craft group had made a beautiful patchwork quilt and this was raffled . We have had some excellent speakers. Mrs Felicity Medcalf was so enthusiastic about Newton Park, she inspired us to recognise our local history. This was followed by a wa.lk round Newton Park -very enjoyable and interesting. The microwave demonstration was really professional and we invited the morning Guild to join us. Our October slides were sbown in aid of Guide Dogs for the Blind. They were slides about Thailand and Nepal. I had been on holiday to Thailand just two weeks before so I had a special reason to enjoy it. The scrabble group continues to bave a pleasurable afternoon once a month. The Craft Group is now meeting at Salt ford Hall once a month and I know they get a great deal of pleasure from talking and sewing. The outing was to "My Fair Lady" at the Theatre Royal in Bath and it was excellent. The Social educat.ion Group went en mass to The American Museum. What a pleasure it was . Most of us had last been about 20 years ago and it was really totally different; well organised displays: a wonderful miniature room and to finish off, a very good cup of tea and cake. We

... continued from opposite will have decided on venues for next year at our meeting in November. Our Christmas Party will be on Tuesday December 14th - we always have a very good lunch thanks to all our members bringing goodies . May I wish you all a Very Happy Christmas and a sense of elation going into the new millennium.
