Dear Fellow Rotarians,

Your Governor has almost completed the Official Visits to the clubs (only two remain) and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Peace Builder Presidents for their cooperation and the preparation they made to make the visits very meaningful to all of us. As I have repeatedly said to each of the clubs, the vis-its are quite tiring but once you see the enthusiasm and the readiness of the clubs t o serve above self, then it becomes very gratifying and tiredness is forgotten.

November, being the Rotary Foundation month, started with the Grant Management Seminar for the Future Vision Plan. Only 11 clubs were not

We are proud and happy to announce that all the Rotary Clubs in our district have satisfied the basic requirement for outstanding club, the strategic plan, except for one which still has to fulfill next month. All the Peace Builder Presidents are now focusing to achieve their annual goals and the Presidential Citations to be recognized officially by the Rotary International.

As for the membership growth concern, all clubs should have reported to RI all the newly inducted members because we expect to receive, in a few weeks to come, the second semester SAR as the basis of the Rotary Clubs on updated membership.

For Discon 2013, all Rotarians who wish to avail the very attractive discounted rates, please make your payments now. The Discon Committee is giving us until December 31 to gain savings on the early registrations. By this time, the Spouse Committee especially the talent night committee, has convened regarding the assigned performances numbers to all zones. Thereafter, the zone coordinators should relay the mechanics to all Peace Builder Presidents as soon as possible, so that they can start organizing for the zone practices early next year.

Governor Lirio reiterated to all Rotary Clubs that they should prepare for the future projects that needs to be financed by the next year’s district funds. I believe that deadline of submissions for review and evaluation by the incoming district administration will be mid-December this year. Likewise, the GSE team announced that project proposals for foreign district funding may now be submitted for possible assistance by their host district abroad.

Important dates to be remembered are as follows:

RC Marikina North headed by Pres. Edith De Ello hosted the district’s first leg of the tenpin bowling tournament held on October 28 and November 4, 2012 at Sta. Lucia East Grand Mall Bowling Center in Cainta, Rizal. With PP Ching Umali as prime mover and at the helm of everything, the event was set in order and steered in proper perspective. RCMNers with their respective assignment imbibed the value of teamwork. A brief opening program kicked off the event with Rtn. Mylene Guevara as emcee.

Thirty (30) Rotary Clubs participated in the games filling up all the available lanes in the center. Brochure of Rules, Regulations, Format and Game Provisions were given out to all competing teams. The teams were classified into three (3) categories namely: Governor’s Cup, Asst. Governor’s Cup and President’s Cup. After drawing of lane assignments, all players proceeded to their respective lane. Throughout the games, it’s all incessant laughter, squeals of excitement whenever a player made a strike, spare or even missed the pins. One can’t help but feel the intense atmosphere of enjoyment.

The second day of the

bowling tournament turned out to be more exciting. Lane assignment was once again drawn by each team captain. From the original thirty (30)competing teams in the qualifying round, only twenty (20) teams remained and played before the championship round. The top three (3) teams in each of the three (3) categories with highest pin falls advanced and seeded to the championship round ( RCMN included) played in the championship round. PP Ching, VP Eric, Dir Ronnie and Kenzo Umali played for our team. Energy level raised several notches higher during championship rounds. RCMN competed with RC Mandaluyong Central for the President’s Cup category. RCMN team garnered higher pin falls but luck was not with it when handicap was considered and the points went to RC Mandaluyong Central. The two (2) other categories’ winners of the second match challenged the qualifiers in the “Twice to beat format” so the games lasted from morning to late afternoon.

The Final Top 3 teams in the different categories are as follows:

Dear District Governor Sandoval:

It is my pleasure to inform you that your nominee, Antonio Guidote Puyat, has been selected by the RI Board of Directors to receive the 2012-13 Service Above Self Award. The RI Board of Directors created this award to recognize those Rotarians who truly embody Rotary’s motto of “Service Above Self.” The Board considers this award to be Rotary International’s highest honor to bestow on a Rotarian. Since a maximum of only 150 Rotarians may be selected, this year the Board was faced with the challenge of selecting the most out-standing from an exemplary group of more than 350 nominees.

Sincerely,

Catherine Lankford Coordinator, Rotary Service

ROTARY YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARDS 2012

By AG Gina Roxas, RC Wack-Wack

The annual RYLA for District 3800 was a three day intensive residential program held in October 26, 27 & 28, 2012 at Pranjetto Hills Resort and Conference Center, Sampaloc, Tanay, Rizal. The event was hosted by the Rotary Club of WackWack and the Rotary Club of Cainta with PP Al Vizcocho and IPP Ging Esteves as Chairman and Chair-person respectively; and PE Jeng Liban of RC Cainta as Program Chairperson.

Our theme for this year was “PEACE in our Family; in our Campus; in our Community; and Peace for the Environment”. The program focused on positive leadership through peace in the environment of youth leaders. Invited resource speakers were Congresswoman Bernadette Herrera-Dy (a PP of RC South Triangle) who discussed Peace in our Family; PP Sed Candelaria and Rotary Peace Scholar Pam Padilla who spoke on Peace in the Campus and in the Community, respectively; and PP Christy C. Barroga, one of the District’s prime mover on Environment, handled the talk on Peace for the Environment. PDG Jun Farcon spoke on “Looking Forward After RYLA”.

There were 65 youth leaders sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of D3800. Highlight of the sessions was the presentation of resolutions from each group to meet peace in the family, campus and in the community focused on building self confidence and self esteem.

Gov Lirio P. Sandoval inspired the youth leaders by sharing an experience on how he encouraged a college scholar to finish his studies. Gov Lirio said that “Peace is about caring for others and having peace within ourselves”. He advised the participants “to always have a positive attitude toward life, not to be discouraged and treat challenges as opportunities to help achieve one’s dream.”

Other invited speakers were PP Manny Tamayo and Peace Builder President Jhon Salarzon of RC Rodriguez. DGE Louie Ticman and PDG Rudy San Felipe gave inspirational messages. RYLA has offered an opportune learn-ing experience and leadership training for the 65 participants. They also had their fun moments and had a great time during their fellowship/talent night giving each group a chance to show their talents. Youth leader Jerick Angeles gave so much laughter and fun that made the night memorable for the group. At the end of the camp, Cristina Anne S. Agustin, sponsored by RC Pasig South, was selected the outstanding youth leader of RYLA 2012.

And as our Governor Lirio P. Sandoval wishes for these young leaders who participated this 2012 RYLA to be future Rotarians, the program has taken these youth to another level in their personal journey.

The RYLA three-day resident experience for the youth leaders of District 3800 did not end on October 28, 2012 because they continuously bond and share how their learnings gave them confidence and self esteem. They net-worked through the “RYLAN 2012 District 3800” on Facebook through the guidance of the program director PE Jeng Ignacio Liban. Follow up question is “ Are you living by your resolutions for Peace in the Family, Peace in the Campus, Peace in the Community and Environmental Peace”? Visit Facebook and feel the energy of future Rotarians of District 3800.

And to the Rotary Clubs who sponsored a youth participant, they made an investment in a youth for which they will always be grateful and will cherish the experience in these three days of their lives. And in the realization of their leadership potential – we have some comments from amongst the youth leaders / participants.

“The RYLA experience was a fun but meaningful one. RYLA 2012 really opened the potential leaders in everyone of us. They dug our hidden skills and abilities, but most of all, they taught us with great passion and conviction.” Jerick Angeles, youth leader (sponsored by RC Marikina South).

INTERACT

About Interact

I nteract is Rotary International’s service club for young people ages 12 to 18. Interact clubs are sponsored by individu-al Rotary clubs, which provide support and guidance, but they are self-governing and self-supporting.

Club membership varies greatly. Clubs can be single gender or mixed, large or small. They can draw from the student body of a single school or from two or more schools in the same community.

Each year, Interact clubs complete at least two community service projects, one of which furthers international understanding and goodwill. Through these efforts, Interactors develop a network of friendships with local and over-seas clubs and learn the importance of

• Developing leadership skills and personal integrity

• Demonstrating helpfulness and respect for others

• Understanding the value of individual responsibility and hard work

• Advancing international understanding and goodwill As one of the most significant and fastest-growing programs of Rotary service, with more than 10,700 clubs in 109 countries and geographical areas, Interact has become a worldwide phenomenon. Almost 200,000 young people are involved in Interact.

For more information about Interact in your area, contact your local Rotary club, or ask RI staff. Read the Interact Handbook and the Interact Brochure.

Update your club’s contact information.

Celebrate Interact's 50th anniversary During the 2012-13 Rotary year, RI will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first chartered Interact club. To help celebrate, the Presidential Citation for Interact clubs and new Interact Certificates of Organization will feature a special anniversary logo. Download logo.

Join clubs worldwide to celebrate 50 years of Interact by organizing activities like these:

• Challenge your club or each Interactor to conduct an event to raise US$50 towards Rotary's fight to eradicate polio.

• During World Interact Week (5-11 November) organize projects that involve 50 positive actions in one of Rotary's areas of focus. Examples include donating 50 books to support basic education and literacy or organizing a com-munity forum with 50 young people. Read about more World Interact Week ideas.

• Interview past Interactors in your area to learn how Interact can fuel a lifetime of service. Bring a camera with you to use the footage to create an entry for the Interact video contest.

SPED_TACULAR PROJECT

(DSG FOR BATAS PAMBANSA #334)

By: Pres. Benjamin “Jhon” Salarzon, RC Rodriguez

This Sped project started with a letter of request sent to me by Mrs. Cecilia P. Angeles, SPED COORDINATOR of San Jose Elementary School, Rodriguez, Rizal. In her letter, she emphasized on the desire to repair their room facilities and putting a toilet for their 130 special students and thus, she fervently believed with Rotary resources to help them.

With this special request from the SPED Center,

the possibility of delivering this project is through the support of DG Lirio Sandoval during his Official Visit to the Club last 10 September 2012. In his speech, he immediately approved the District Simplified Grant for a worthy and sustainable service project if the club could submit a proposal on or before 15 September 2012.

On this special challenge, the club service project director committed himself to finish the whole program and assured the members that it will be awarded to us. After two days, the floor plans together with the letter and the material cost were submitted to the office of DG Lirio. And fortunately, September 18, 2012… PP Albert Ang emailed me and said: “D3800 DG/DRFC are happy to advise that RC Rodriguez had been awarded P55,000 for your Toilet renovation project under the District Simplified Grant (DSG).”

Since the grant was awarded to the club, PbP Jhon, Dir Leo and PE Nat called for a Parent Teacher meeting and present to them the entire program of SPEDTACULAR project for BP#334 or the ACCESSIBILITY LAW on the construction of SPED Classroom and Toilet. The beneficiaries and the clubs approved the construction will be October and November. The club provided all the materials needed and the parents’/teachers’ part would be to provide the labor on the construction of the room and the toilet. (...continued on page 13)

With the time and effort extended by the parents/teachers, the new toilet and the classroom were finished on time. The club did not end on the construction but got engaged as well with the counseling and the orientation of the parents in handling their children.

Joining her in the orientation was Police Officer Binasoy from PNP Rodriguez who discussed the Violence against Women and Children and the Special Child Laws. Around 80 parents participated in the forum and with so much emotions on the Parents and Child Relationship, everybody in the as-sembly was crying to express the joy and hardship in having a special child during the open forum. The final stage of the project was the turn-over of the service project to the beneficiaries. Last 26 November 2012, DG Lirio and SG Augie were the guests of honor and they themselves experienced and felt the joy of the principal, the teachers, the parents and the students for the generosity the club and the district extended to them.

That is why, 24 November 2012 was set for the special course intended for the parents. This lecture was handled by PRO Grace Gianan, who by profession is a School Guidance Counselor.

Principal Seguerra was so happy for the blessing the Rotarians have awarded for the center and in return, the special dance performance from the students was rendered to DG Lirio and to the Rotarians as their token of appreciation.

It has been the yearly program of RC Taytay to conduct “career guidance” to secondary schools in Rizal to help the students in choosing a career.

For this year, Rotary’s theme is “Peace Through Service” and RC Taytay has chosen Juan Sumulong Memorial Junior College as a beneficiary. Participants are 3rd year high school students totalling 560 and 22 faculty members.

This service project was spear-headed by the very indefatigable VP/Dir. Fernando “Jun” Cabitac Jr. who made all the preparations & coordinations with the school principal, Dr. Reynaldo Faustino. This was held on Nov. 23, 2012 at the School Auditorium.

Gone are the days when our students entering college will choose any course - most specially the group who wouldn’t want to be separated from one another, “where one is, others join”, not thinking of the kind of life he will have in the future and not minding the economic status that they will have.

The club invited resource and guest speakers who enlightened the young minds of our students.

There was an open forum and interaction between the speakers and students. The lively participation of the group was noted. It seems that time was too short because the students were all eager and interested to ask questions.

It only proved that our youth nowadays are keen in choosing their career, careful in their choice, and looking forward what their life will be a few years from now.

The following stood as guest/ resource speakers :

1.) Brig. Gen. Alfredo Andres-who talked on Military Service

2.) Mr. Manuel Ocular- analyst from TESDA who shared ideas from

technical skills

3.) Dr. Joyce Eguia- feild of Medicine, discussed the benefits of being a physician

4.) Engr. Andres M. San Gabriel- Engineering

5.) Atty. Grace V. Adducul-Law

Engr. San Gabriel and Dr. Eguia are active members of Rotary Club of Taytay.

After the forum, the participants were able to think about what to pursue, where to go, what to take up, in what institution or what school, what university to enrol in, or probably be able to think of their life in the future.

Success isn’t getting what we pursue, but being satisfied with our choice, and the way to be successful in the future is to be happy and grateful in our life with the career that we are going to take up.
