Ruth Dill-Macky Professor, Small Grains Pathology Appointment 70% Research, 30% Teaching Education Ph.D. University of Queensland, 1993 Botany (Plant Pathology) B.Sc. Honours, First Class, University of Queensland, 1984 Botany (Plant Pathology) B.Sc., University of Queensland, 1983 Botany, Biochemistry Appointment History 2009 - present, Professor, Department of Plant Pathology, University of Minnesota 2000 - 2009, Associate Professor, Department of Plant Pathology, University of Minnesota 1994 - 2000, Assistant Professor, Department of Plant Pathology, University of Minnesota 1992 - 1994, Research Associate, Department of Plant Pathology, University of Minnesota 1984 - 1992, Plant Pathologist, Queensland Wheat Research Institute, Queensland Department of Primary Industries, Australia Research Program I head an applied program in small grains pathology with emphasis on disease management through the use of host resistance and cultural control practices. My program has responsibility for all diseases of wheat, barley and oat, except the cereal rusts, however due to the gravity of the Fusarium head blight (FHB) situation in Minnesota since 1993, my research has focused largely on the management of FHB of wheat and barley. In the past five years the prevalence of Bacterial Leaf Streak (BLS) has increased and so increasingly my program has been working on this too. In addition to the FHB and BLS work we conduct research on loose smut of oat and net blotch of barley. My program is presently undertaking research on: the effect of the environment on FHB development, the expression of resistance, and mycotoxin accumulation in wheat and barley; the role of Fusarium-infested residues in FHB epidemics and exploring control options - including cultural, biocontrol, and fungicides - directed toward these residues, developing inoculation methods to screen wheat and barley for reaction to BLS in the field and greenhouse; and identifying sources of resistance to BLS in the wheat and barley germplasm My program works in close collaboration with the small grain breeders at the University of Minnesota: James A. Anderson (wheat) and Kevin P. Smith (barley). My role is in the development of techniques to assist in the identification of disease resistance in plants, the screening of germplasm to identify sources of resistance, and screening of breeding material to facilitate the introgression of genetic resistance. Teaching and Advising PLPA2001, Introductory Plant Pathology (Spring Semesters 2007 to present) Director of Graduate Studies; 2009-2011 Chair, Plant Pathology Undergraduate Education Committee; 2012 to present At present, I advise one Ph.D. student, two MS students and serve on five graduate committees.
