Visitthe Vodka Museum, which boasts 250 varietiesof the national drink.

KizhiSituated to the northeast of Lake Onega, the islandof Kizhi is home to an open-air museum of fasci-nating wooden architecture. Walking on theisland, you can see old wooden churches, chapels,bell towers, peasant houses, granaries, barns,windmills and bathhouses which were all broughtfrom the Onega region to illustrate the architec-ture common to the Russian North. The focalpoint, referred to as the Kizhi Ensemble, compris-es the awe-inspiring 22-domed TransfigurationCathedral built in 1714 in three tiers entirelywithout nails. The Cathedral, along with the belltower, are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Theyare adjacent to the neighboring Church ofIntercession which was built in 1774.

Goritsy – A Stronghold of Old RussiaWelcome to the northwest of Russia, the village ofGoritsy, home to the Resurrection Convent,standing at the shoreline. A tour to the town ofKirillov features the major Orthodox strongholdof Old Russia, the Monastery of St. Cyril on theWhite Lake. No other city inRussia except Yaroslavl can boast such a wealth ofthe 17th-century architecture. Uglich – History of a DynastyThe provincial town of Uglich was the former seatof princedom back in the 13th century. Uglich isthe town where one of the most momentous eventsof the Russian history took place in the 16th cen-tury. It was then that the last member of the Ruirikdynasty, the young Tsarevich Dmitry, was mur-dered. That dreadful event gave rise to what laterbecame known as the time of trouble which lastedfor 15 years before the Romanov dynasty began.Today’s Uglich does cherish its history and you canstill see the relics of the past such as the Church ofSt. Dmitry on the Blood. Built in 1690 on the spotwhere Dmitry had been murdered, it appears onthe horizon with its red walls and blue domes asone sails on the Volga.
