RUN from FEAR for flute, clarinet, piano, cello and double bass

General Instructions:
Accelerando for indicated duration
Play the contents of the box repeatedly for the duration of the thick black line. Do not sync with other players
Play the contents of the box as fast as possible in any order for the duration of the thick black line
Flute/Clarinet:
fluttertongue
Play same pitch with dif-ferent fingerings. The performer should choose appropriate fingerings to maximize variation of sound
Slowly bend note as indicated
Piano:
Finger node on string inside piano to produce harmonic. Harmonic should be the same pitch-class as notated pitch and location should be marked on the string
During accelerando, slowly push fingers on the string so that it is fully muted on the final attack
Play a chromatic tone cluster approximately in specified range
Cello/Double Bass:
Bass sounds one octave below writ-ten pitch

Increase/decrease bow pressure according to thickness of black line
Slowly move from ord. bowing position to sul ponticello
Pedaling is up to performer except where indicated
Performance Note:The title of this piece refers to a Bruce Nauman neon sculpture which contains the text “Run from Fear” above the text “Fun from Rear.” This piece is based on the minor third E-G which comes from the first song I learned to play on guitar: “About a Girl” from the Nirvana Unplugged album. As in Nauman’s sculpture, this piece strives to be both serious and light-hearted at the same time. This piece was commissioned by Bowdoin College in celebration of the opening of the Studzinski Recital Hall.
