The National Conference was organised by the National Federation of the Blind (NFB) & Blind People’s Association (BPA) on behalf of Asian Blind Union (ABU) and International Council for Education of People with Visual Impairment (ICEVI), West Asia. There were 6 plenary and 16 concurrent sessions and 64 paper presenters. Papers were presented on the topics of Inclusive Education, Inclusive Employment and Advocacy for Inclusion.

The Founder General Secretary of the BPA Late Jagdish K. Patel and his wife Late Smt. Bhadraben had very generously donated their bungalow to the Blind People's Association in their will. This new campus has been named the “Kashibhai Lalitaben Jagdish Bhadra Early Intervention Centre” and has facilities specially designed for very young infants and toddlers with multiple disabilities. These children are assessed and helped to develop their abilities and grow as normally as possible through a multi- disciplinary team consisting of a Counselor, Special Educator, Physiotherapist, and Mobility Instructor etc. This Centre is equipped with modern developmental equipment, exercise equipment, electrical therapy equipment, parallel bars, exercise cycle and other equipment for the muscular development, positioning and motor development of the children with multiple disabilities. This centre provides services to 60 severely disabled children from birth to 6 years in the centre based setting and to around 150 children in rural areas.

BPA received funds from Dr. Harikrishna Dahyabhai Swami General Charitable Trust for starting a Sensory Park. The park was put together with the help of student of NID – Ms. Sadhvi Thukral and an Italian student from CEPT Ms. Paola. It has drawings, recreational equipment, sensory motor equipment and many interesting and educative toys and learning material. This Park was

thinaugurated in the presence of the donors on Wednesday 10 February, 2016.

thBlind People's Association and Ahmedabad Round Table-40 organized 20 Car Rally for the blind on 7 February, 2016 in which 60 cars participated. The objective of this Rally is to create public awareness about the potentials of the blind and to develop the sense of competition among blind persons. This Car Rally was flagged off by the Mayor Mr. Gautam Shah of Ahmedabad city from the GMDC ground adjoining the Blind People's Association. The prize distribution function was held at Club-O7, a very upcoming and grand venue. Mr. Ugesh Sarkar, a mind magician impressed the people with mental tricks and card tricks. The prize winners were given shields and certificates.

CAR RALLY WITH A DIFFERENCE

Rameshbhai Shah and Kokilaben Shah, donors of the Cataract Free Sabarkantha Initiative and Trustees of the Samta Vikas Charitable Trust (SVCT) celebrated their 50th marriage anniversary by treating the blind students to a sumptuous lunch at BPA campus

thon 7 February, 2016. They had also invited around 250 of their friends and relatives for a lunch sponsored by them and organized at the BPA. The lunch was followed by a stage function where friends and relatives paid tribute to the couple and appreciated their deep commitment to humanity. The couple has raised funds for providing eye sight and corrective surgery to all the needy persons in Sabarkantha and Aravalli districts. All the screening camps and surgeries are carried out by the BPA Navalbhai & Hiraba Eye Hospital, Bareja.

Shri Ratanlal Jesaliya and Smt. Kamlaji Jesaliya from Rajasthan celebrated

ththeir 66 Wedding Anniversary with their family members at BPA Campus on

FROM GOVERNMENT

BPA received Rs. 26,25,000/- from Government of

India, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment,

Department of Empowerment of Persons with

Disabilities for distribution of aid/ appliances for

distribution and camp activity in Surendranagar,

Banaskantha, Kutch and Bhavnagar districts of

Gujarat. Ahmedabad as a Headquarter has been

allocated Rs. 7.50 Lakh. An assessment camp was

organised on 10.10.2015 with the consent of the

Ahmedabad district SDO. Ahmedabad being

Headquarter the distribution process is ongoing and

persons coming for Hearing Aid and crutches are

given on spot. A formal distribution function was

kept on 1st January 2016 where the Aids &

appliances were distributed by the Ahmedabad

district SDO Mr. Desai.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

CSR - A BLESSING FOR PERSONS WITH

DISABILITY

Corporate Social Responsibility is the continuing commitment by business

to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while

improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as

of the local community and society at large

Conducting Outreach Eye Camps and Eye Sight Restoration Surgery in

Rural Areas in the State of Gujarat It has sanctioned first payment of Rs.

2,47,500/- in the month of March-2016.

�Rasna International Pvt. Ltd. supported Rs. 20,00,000 lakhs for the joint

project Save-Sight-Ahmedabad Under which more than 4000 corrective

cataract surgeries have been performed. Camps were organized in

different parts of rural and slums areas of Ahmedabad. Patients having

minor eye ailments have been provided treatment at the camp site itself

and the patients having cataract have been brought to Bareja eye

hospital. BPA thanks Piruz Khambatta for this generosity.

�GRUH Finance has given an in-principle sanction to provide funding of

Rs.9,06,400/- to National Association for the Blind (NAB) for running

Savinay Sammilit Pathshala, Bavla for one year, 2016-2017. The first

tranche of Rs.2 lac from out of the total amount was sanctioned.

�Staff of Vijaya Bank Ltd. collected Rs. 1,11,111/- and donated to the

organization. DGM of the bank and other staff members remained th

present on 5 January, 2016 and they addressed the activities and the

staff members visited our "Vision-in-the Dark" Project.

�Mr. Bhavin Oza of Central Bank of India donated Rs. 90,000 under

Corporate Social Responsibility for providing 5 Telephone Booths and 10

Hand Carts to needy persons with disabilities

Rs. 20,00,000 as donation from CIMS Hospital Pvt. Ltd. Ahmedabad for

Sandesh Charitable Trust donatedRs. 11,10, 000 from for providing 185 tricycles. First distribution program of 25 tricycles to the needy and poor physically challenged people of various districts of Gujarat was on 30th March at BPA campus. Mr. Bipin Chief Reporter and Mr. Jay Patel and Mr. Stavan were present during the distribution program. BPA thanks the management and entire family and staff members for making these people independent.

FROM SANDESH CHARITABLE TRUST

Ms. Manjula Shah, Mrs. Kosha M. Jain and Mr. Sunil

Choudhary of Pragati School, Khokhara, Ahmedabad

have mobilized a donation of 2 Computers and donated

the Same on 3rd March, 2016 for the use of blind

students. This very valuable donation will help

students with visual impairment to compete with non

disabled students and prove that they are as able as

anybody else.

BPA thanks Parikh Saheb, Rameshbhai, Varshaben, Kusumben and Pandya Saheb and all the enthusiastic members of Rohini & Ahwini Gardens,Vastrapur, Ahmedabad for the donation of Rs. 3,00,550 for sponsoring cataract surgeries and for collecting clothes and other items for distribution to poor persons. BPA blind students performed a “Street Play on Swachhta Abhiyan” which was appreciated by all the audience. One kind member also donated Rs. 100 to every performer and also gave homemade snacks so lovingly to all the BPA family members.

DADA-DADI PICNICRotary Club Of Supreme arranged a picnic for Dada-Dadi on 21st February,2016 at Radhakrishan Iscon Temple at Bhadaj and distributed food grains etc. to 70 such needy senior citizens.

DISTRIBUTION

A total of 1331 assistive devices were distributed at a cost of Rs. 67,43,669 during 2015-16. This was possible due to support of Ministry of Social Justice a n d E m p o w e r m e n t , Government of India and dedicated donors of the BPA. PlexTalk Machine wh ich enab les b l ind persons to record and listen to educational materials was distributed to 219 blind students at a total cost of Rs. 17,30,319. National Institute for the Visually Hand icapped (N IVH) , Dehradun gifted this machine to students.

SCHOLARSHIP FOR BLIND STUDENTS

BPA distributed Scholarships to students with

visual impairment who are undergoing graduation

and post graduation on 30th March, 2016. 79

under graduate and 37 Post Graduate students

who have secured more than 60% in their last

examination were given Rs. 1000 to Rs. 1500

respectively. The major part of the scholarship

amount is donated by Mr. H.N. Makim who himself

blind person and by Mr. Piyushbhai Desai of Wagh

Bakri Tea. There are many other small donors who

have also contributed to the scholarship fund.

23-25 February, 2016 : Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation organised in Ahmedabad. Nikesh Prajapati, Drupad Sardhavwala, Nandlal Gautam, Juhi Rawal participated in running and Nirav Kansara, Bhumi Trivedi, Rutvik Bhatt, Manish Pancholi participated in running, ball throw and baseball. Students and trainees of Blind People's Association got 9 Gold – 11 Silver & 3 Bronze medals

8 March, 2016: Ms. Takhu Kukadia a visually impaired girl from BPA won the second prize in the Cricket Tournament for the Blind Women held at Vapi.

thBPA blind boys’ participated in 15 Dr. Shakuntala Misra Blind National Cricket Tournament and won the medal.

KHEL MAHAKUMBH VIKLANG NAGAR RAMATOTSAV-SPORTS COMPETITION

24 February 2016: Sports, Cultural and Youth Activities Department of Gujarat has sponsored State Level Athletics meet for the blind at Gujarat University Track, University Campus, Navrangpura, Ahmedabad. The events of this Meet were 100 Mt running, long jump, disc through, javelin throw, Shot-put. This Meet hosted by National Association for the Blind, Gujarat Branch. Around 450 blind persons paricipated. Mr. B.M. Vanar, Director of Sports, Gujarat University inaugurated this Meet as Chief Guest.

The BPA team consisting of Dr. Bhushan Punani who is the President National Abilympics Association of India (NAAI), Ms. Tejal Lakhia, Vice President West NAAI, 2 contestants with disabilities namely; Mr. Trikam Parmar and Mr. Gaurav Patel, participated in the Abilympics in France from 24-26 March, 2016. Trikam participated in artificial limbs category and Gaurav in the Desk Top Publishing (DTP). Dr. Punani was a Judge in the international event which was a grand one beautifully executed by the French Implementing Agency.

Mr. Javed Ahmad, General Secretary of NAB J&K visited BPA on 12th January, 2016 and discussed the concrete plan of initiating a Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) project in Baramulla, Kashmir. This was followed up by selection of field staff and their training at BPA from 15-26 March, 2016. This will be the first BPA CBR project in Kashmir and persons with disabilities will benefit greatly. We thank CBM for funding this project.

Mrs. Nandini Rawal, Executive Director (BPA) & Advisor (CBM) has been invited as an expert in the field of inclusive education; d i s a b i l i t y a n d development, to p r o v i d e e x p e r t i nput s fo r th i s project as a member of the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) for the RSIIENE project. The 'RSIIENE' project (Regional Strategy on Innovative and Inclusive Education in North East) is initiated to complement inclusive education component of SSA programme and improve the quality of education for c h i l d r e n w i t h d i s a b i l i t i e s i n government/government supported schools in selected districts of Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, and Tripura with support of three reputed international agencies CBM, Light For the World and Liliane Fonds (Jan Vikas Samiti in India), all of whom have major presence in the North East India. She attended the first meeting of TAG held on 25-26 February 2016 at Bethany Society, Shillong.

Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDUGKY) is a central

government scheme which provides skill development training to rural youth and

links them to jobs. Gujarat Livelihood Promotion Company (GLPC) and Project

Implementation Agencies (PIAs) organized a Programme on 6 April, 2016 in Tagore

Hall, Ahmedabad. The programme concluded with the speech of the Hon'ble Chief

INAUGURATION OF

MODULAR OPERATION THEATRE IN BAREJA

Shri Rajendrabhai Patel & Giraben Patel, USA originally from Navagam (Near Bareja)

and brother-in-law of Manubhai G. Patel, CA, Vice President of BPA donated Rs.

16,30,000/- for setting up of Modular Operation Theater and purchase of IITV (Image

Intensifier Television) to improve the quality of services in Bareja Gatorbhai

Himatbhai Patel Orthopaedic Hospital, Bareja. Inauguration of this new Modular th

Operation Theatre and Installation was held on 8 April, 2016. He donated this

amount in the memory of Late Shri Ratibhai Kashibhai Patel (Navagam), inspired by

Dr. Roopen, Dr. Ankita and Dr. Rachna Patel, USA and inaugurated by the worthy hands

of Shri Manubhai G. Patel, of BPA. We thank Rajubhai and his family for his

humanitarian deed.

CHIEF MINISTER GRACES DDUGKY PROGRAMME

Recently, Social Defense Department,

Government of Gujarat issued a GR

stating that People with Disabilities

(PwDs) will get a permanent ID through

which they will be able to travel in all

Gurjer Nagari, Intercity, Luxury and Volvo

buses run by the Gujarat State Road

Transport Corporation (GSRTC).

Moreover, the Department has removed

the clause of income limit and the cards

will be issued to all people with

disabilities. This GR also states that now

onwards, people who have 80% or more

visual or hearing impairment can also

avail the benefit of concession in travel.

We recognize and appreciate this

initiative of Department of Social Justice

& Empowerment and GSRTC; as this GR

has resolved majority of pending issues

related to public transportation for

people with disabilities.
