The new water main will be installed at night during July and August.
To install the water main safely, we will need to shut Royal Road Bridge. Message boards on the bridge will advertise the night closures and detours will be in place.
We thank you for your patience while we complete this work.

As part of the SH16 Lincoln to Westgate Upgrade, we are building a new bridge and working with Watercare to install a new water main.
This water main will supply water to reservoirs on the North Shore for the growing needs of businesses and residents.
The existing water main, which runs along the southern side of the bridge, will be replaced with a pipe on the northern side of Royal Road Bridge, next to the temporary footpath.
The new water main will be above ground and run the length of the bridge next to the shared path.

2 | SH16 Lincoln to Westgate - Construction Update July 2017
Work on Royal Road Bridge will start early July.
The new bridge will be raised and widened. Once completed, it will have three traffic lanes, cycle lanes, a shared path on the northern side for walkers and cyclists, and a footpath on the southern side.
Royal Road Bridge sits near a high point on the motorway and overlooks several waterways that link to the Waitemata.
The artwork symbolises historic pathways on the high ridge and choosing of the waterway below to travel on.

On-road cycle lanes (also known as Copenhagen lanes) are being installed on Royal Road Bridge following consultation with Bike Auckland. Copenhagen lanes were first introduced in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The lanes sit at a higher level than the road and separates cyclists and vehicles without the need for a physical barrier. Copenhagen lanes have been installed in Christchurch and now Auckland will benefit from them.

If you’ve driven past Royal Road Bridge or taken the Royal Road off-ramp lately, you may have noticed that noisewalls are now a feature of the landscape.
When finished, 1,100 noisewall panels, which translates to 2.7 kilometres of pre-stressed concrete, will run along this stretch of the motorway.

What do you do on the project?I am the Superintendent on this project and I co-ordinate all sub-contractors. I look at who needs what and where it’s needed. Our workspace is limited and a lot of planning is needed so all the teams can get their jobs done safely.
How did you get into your line of work?I have worked in the construction industry for more than 42 years and have held many roles on various projects around the world. I am based in Cairns, Queensland, and prior to joining Hawkins Infrastructure, worked for McConnell Dowell International for many years.
You might be surprised to know…I’m from British Columbia, Canada, and lived there for 32 years.
