The facts continue to be troubling. 67 per cent of Canadians personally know a woman who has been abused, and on any given day in Canada, 6,300 women

and children will stay at a shelter to escape domestic violence. Unfortunately, violence often escalates

when a woman leaves her partner. This causes communities to rely heavily on

shelters to offer emotional support and options to women in crisis, as well as a safe haven and hope to those who take the courageous steps to leave.

So you’re renovating your kitchen. Cabinetry, counters, flooring and appliances have been selected and you’re thinking all the big decisions are made. But have you put any thought into some of the finishing elements for your new kitchen like your faucet and sink? When discussing kitchen designs with some clients I find when it comes to the sink and faucet their response is “it’s just a sink – how difficult can the choices be?”. With so many choice available, it’s more of a challenge than you are anticipating.

can convert your “simple” sink in to a space-saving workstation – a great alternative for kitchens with a slightly smaller footprint. Compliment your sink designs with what I consider to be “jewelry” for your kitchen – the faucet. One of this year’s new product launches, the Artona faucet, features a subtle wave design, which adds an artful sculptural element that works in contemporary and transitional kitchen designs. Artona is available in a multitude of finishes and colour options from lustrous chrome to stainless, Silgranit and dual-finish.

Here are a few important points to remember when starting your hunt for the finishing elements in your kitchen:

• Make sure your new sink is the right size for your cabinetry

• If you decide to use an apron sink in your space be sure to do so early on in the design process as this requires a specific design of your cabinetry

I know a kitchen renovation is a large investment, not only dollar-wise, but time-wise as well. Make sure you are well-informed about not only the major decisions, but also about your finishing touches as they are equally important to the overall look and function of your new kitchen. Spring is here and everyone is looking for easy ways to freshen up and add some personality to their spaces after the long winter.

An easy way to do this is by incorporating colourful accents into your home. We enjoyed designing this living room space and started by working with neutral furniture pieces and then injecting a bold coloured patterned rug. We added further impact and drama to the space by infusing colourful art, accents and pillows in the space. The layers of colours, patterns and tones give this living space personality and overall appeal.

When selecting the key pieces in your room opt for quality upholstery or have custom pieces created for you by a store like Silva Custom Furnishings. Although this can be more costly, it’s well worth the investment as it will provide added comfort for many years ahead. I recommend selecting fabrics that are both durable and in a tone and texture that you will not tire of quickly. In this living space we selected a neutral palette of upholstery fabrics that act as a perfect backdrop for the bright, vibrant, and bold patterned pillows and accessories, which can be switched out seasonally.

Our design process: we started with the rich wood-toned feature wall adding custom art niches. The homeowners were drawn to three boldly coloured paintings, which we used as inspiration for the room’s colour palette. The key base components of this room consists of lightly toned walls, champagne-coloured

solid silk drapes, a warm grey velvet for the sofa and cream woven fabric for the chairs.

When pulling together a room it is important to have one key source of inspiration that has several colours that you want in the space. An area rug, accent chair fabric or art piece often are the best places to start. Refer back to the piece for inspiration and reference when selecting your accent fabrics and developing the overall colour scheme.

Mixing different patterns and textures in a space will add layers of depth and personality. Experiment and play with different patterns and combine larger patterns with smaller ones. The rule is to select fabrics within the same colour palette of two to four colours and to keep

patterns in a complimentary style, ie: graphic, organic, modern or traditional.

When adding accents to this room we started with the artwork first, next we found the statement area rug, which really brought a graphic pattern to the space. From there we mixed and matched accent cushions and picked up on those colours with decorative accents on the shelving on the feature walls.

Love those oversized windows and the daytime sunshine that comes streaming in? Natural light – and lots of it – is a must for many homeowners, and with good reason. But in exchange for that gorgeous glow, it’s important to have quick access to some serious shade or simply, a little extra privacy, when you need it. The good news? There are countless window coverings for every space, style and budget. The best part? These shades, drapes and curtains are as chic and inspired as they are practical and functional. You’ve put considerable thought and energy into searching for the right solution for your window coverings and now frustration is settling in and you’re more confused than ever. The challenge here is not just deciding on what you like, but what is a complimentary solution for small spaces.

Window shades really are an efficient answer to your dilemma, but there are several important things to remember when considering window shades for smaller spaces. Avoid any blind with a stack, such as wood slats blinds or roman blinds and select a blind style that is hidden when not in use. Neutral pull down shades can roll up and condense into 2.5” (or less). They are a simple solution to combat glare, provide UV protection and privacy, and virtually appear hidden when not in use. They are offered in a variety of classic modern fabrics and are available as “dual shades.” This type of window covering contains two shades taking the space of a single unit and giving you the best of both worlds: a day shade that filters the sun and a night shade that provides complete darkness.

If you are more of a statement junkie like myself, you may be more inclined to use a drapery treatments that offer warmth and softness to your room, while keeping to a modern scheme. To maintain a streamlined look, which is important in smaller spaces, I suggest you avoid the use of round drapery poles with large finials, which are meant to be mounted on the walls. Use small face tracks (5/8” in size) and hang from the ceiling, a more modern approach to dressing your windows. The header for your drapes is also important. A ripple-fold header is one of the most appropriate

styles, it is user-friendly for smaller spaces. A ripple-fold header will condense better than any other pleated style to maximize your view and the hardware. Designed for an uninterrupted, easy glide over larger fabric lengths. You really should avoid window valances in smaller spaces. Valances cut up your window space too much and cause it to appear smaller than it really is. Drapes add colour and texture while emphasizing

the height of any window. They balance the room by adding an element of design, and draw attention to the windows by framing them just like a frame for a piece of art. If you want to have your “cake and eat it too” then consider layering a couple of treatments. Combine drapes with sheers or shades, or even sheers with shades for a different look.

Finally, avoid purchasing ready-made drapery. There are many well-known go-to retailers out there, but this is really not the solution for your specific dilemma. Custom window treatments will deliver on maximizing your window space and the aesthetics of your condo. A beautiful room deserves the perfect window treatment that allows for the right light filtration and perfectly highlights windows you loved.

I’m often asked about design trends. Enquiring voices looking for some version of the canned replies, such as “pink is so hot right now” or “big bold patterns are really in.” As a designer who prefers longevity over trendiness, both philosophically and environmentally speaking, these of-the-moment trends don’t do much for me. I find as with all trends in life, on a grander scale, they are cyclical. Trends repeat, and tend to come out of an emotional need in the market. We feel the need for more connection in how our kitchen links to our living space, or we need our interior furnishings to offer a uniqueness that offsets the sameness offered in our big box homes. The trends respond to how we ‘feel’ about our homes.

Imperfection in design has become a sought-after feature for designers and homeowners alike. Reclaimed barn board, vintage finds and a celebration of all things organic and singular, remains at the forefront of popularity. It can be a tricky balance to strike between the individual craftsmen, offering made-to-order custom pieces, and the mass-market reproductions, offering two dimensional facsimiles with forced distressing, mock character and sometimes lacking soul.

However, there are products for those of us in need of available retail options that still appease our thirst for what could be uniquely ours. I look for collections where the imperfections in the wood are embraced and celebrated; exposing and highlighting the unique qualities of each piece. After all, no two pieces are identical, made different by virtue of the shape, grain and measurements of the wood. 3.5 g Cracked black peppercorns

DIRECTIONS

1. Add all ingredients, except for oil, salt and pepper

to food processor and pulse until combined.

2. Slowly add oil while blending to achieve a

permanent emulsion.

3. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

KALE SALAD: Candied BC salmon with a mixture of quinoa, kale,

sweet potato, celery, apples, feta, candied pecans and

red wine vinaigrette.

CANDIED PECANS

½ lb Pecans

42.5 g Honey

108.5 g Brown sugar

2 oz Corn syrup

0.5 g Cayenne pepper

1.5 g Kosher salt

DIRECTIONS

1. Mix all ingredients, except for pecans, until well

combined. Add pecans and toss in mixture until all

are covered.

2. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet, in the

oven at 400 F° for 5 minutes. Remove, stir pecans

and separate as best as possible. Return to oven

for 10 minutes, or until pecans are golden brown

and honey is bubbling.

3. Remove from oven and allow to cool.

4. Once cool, separate into small clusters.

KALE SALAD

2 tbsp Yam, peeled and cut into quarter inch

cubes, blanched (boiled and cooled)

2 tbsp Apple (your choice), cut into quarter inch

cubes and drizzled with a teaspoon of lime juice

2 tbsp Celery, diced into quarters

2 tbsp Feta, crumbled (reserve half)

2 tbsp Crumbled candied pecans

4 oz Quinoa, cooked and cooled

2 oz Baby kale

2 oz Shredded candied salmon

2 oz Red wine vinaigrette

DIRECTIONS

1. In a non-reactive bowl, combine the kale salad

ingredients. Drizzle the dressing around the edge

of the bowl and toss lightly with your hands, being

careful not to bruise the kale.

2. Pile high into a large bowl, sprinkle with reserved

feta and serve.

How to be mortgage free faster.

Think your house is comfortable now? Imagine walking through the door knowing that you never need to make a mortgage payment again. In addition to the satisfaction of being mortgage free, paying off your mortgage faster can save you money by reducing the interest you pay.

Here are some strategies that can help you pay off your mortgage faster:

Strategy #1: Increase the frequency of payments• Take advantage of biweekly or weekly payment options rather

than monthly payments.

Strategy #2: Take advantage of increased payment options• Pay more with each installment. Some banks allow customers to

increase their payments by up to 100% of their regular payment amount at any time throughout the term of the mortgage. Even increasing by 10% can make a big difference over time.

Strategy #3: Take advantage of lump-sum payments• Most banks offer the opportunity to make lump-sum

payments on your mortgage. Check with your mortgage

provider about the maximum lump-sum payment you can make. It may be up to 15% of the original borrowed amount each year.

Strategy #4: Choose a shorter amortization period• Most mortgages are amortized over a 25-year period,

meaning that’s how long it will take for your combination of principal and interest payments to pay off the outstanding balance. A shorter amortization period may dramatically reduce the amount of interest you pay over the shortened life of your mortgage.

Strategy #5: Do it all! Take advantage of flexible features• A recent TD Canada Trust survey found that 55% of

Canadians take advantage of increased payment frequency, four in five do it in order to pay off their mortgage as soon as possible and 60% would be more likely to make a lump-sum payment if their mortgage gave them the flexibility to pay less if something unexpected came up.

• Investigate the mortgage options offered by your bank. Flexible mortgage payment features can provide you with peace of mind and more control, in the event you need to reduce your payments.

Example of strategies in action:

The chart below demonstrates how, on a $200,000 mortgage, switching from a 30 year amortization period with monthly payments to a 20 year amortization period with rapid biweekly payments could save you approximately $7,525.45 in interest over a 7 year term.
