Wawelthe Hill of Reputation in Krakow,theheart ofevery Polish and a must for foreign tourists,isthe

symbol of Polishhistory and culture. Peoplelived on Wawel Hill atthesite ofthe Castle asearly as fifty

thousand years ago. Thesettlement was apparently active withtrade, assorted crafts and local farming.

When more people began to settle down on the Wawel Hill and when trade became moreefficient,the

rulers of Poland took up theirresidence atthe Hill as well, and built prestigious Royal Castle. The Wawel

Castleserved as a royalresidence and thesite wherethecountry'srulers governed Poland for five

centuries from 1038 until 1609.

During theearly 16thcentury King Sigismund I and his Italian wife, broughtin the best native and

foreign artistsincluding Italian architects,sculptors, and German decorators,to renovatethecastleinto

impressive unique palace. Itsoon became a model ofimperialresidencein Central and Eastern Europe

and served widely as a modelthroughouttheregion. In 1609 King Sigismund moved thecapitalto

Warsaw, and toughtimes for Wawel began.

Asitisknown to everyonethatto build may haveto betheslow and laborioustask of years, To destroycan bethethoughtless act of a single day.During The Swedishinvasions of 1655 1657 thecastle was

partially destructed. The Hill was occupied by the Russian Army in 1794 and the Royal Crownwasstolen.

In 1795 the Castle, as an important defensive point, wasrestructured by Austrians army withsome

internal modification ofthelayout. In thesecond part ofthe 19thcentury theAustriansredesigned the

protective wall.

After World War I,the government of Polish Republic decided that Wawel Castle wasto become a

representative building ofthe Polishstate and would be used by the Governor and later by the President

himself.Subsequentto World War II, by the decree ofthe State National Council, Royal Castle became a

national museum.
