American College of Sports Medicine

I recently became a member of the American College of Sports Medicine. This is a great

organization to be apart of because it is the largest in the world with more than 50,000 members.

There mission is to advance and integrate scientific research to provide educational and practical

applications of exercise science and sports medicine. I am a student member, which is a great

choice to have because it is not costly.

American College Dance Festival

Last year I attended the American College Dance Festival at West Chester University.

The conference was four days and it consisted of panels, classes and performances. Each day you

were aloud to pick different classes and panels to attend. We worked all year with our artistic

director Paule Turner to create innovative works that were adjudicated by dance professionals.

The theme of the conference was the Architectural Body. This conference allowed me to meet

other professional artist in the field. I was able to meet professionals in the Dance Medicine field,

who are currently helping me shape my future in my career of dance and health.

Sigma Alpha Lambda

Last September I was invited to join Sigma Alpha Lambda a National Leadership and

Honors Organization. This organization asked me to be apart of it because of my 3.7 GPA and

because of my involvements on campus. I attend meetings and any events that the organization

plans. The organization does a lot of work with the community. For example, we adopted a

family for thanksgiving, participated in back to the boro, volunteer at soup kitchens and threw a

benefit dinner for firefighters.

Get Fit

This year is my first year being apart of the Get Fit program. The Get Fit program is for

people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their care givers. The program

focuses on diet and exercise and it seeks to reduce the risk of obesity and diabetes, which are

higher for this group of individuals. Each week the clients come for an hour long workout that

consists of: Cardiovascular training, Muscle strength training and coordination training. The

clients and their caregivers can also use the Nutrition My Way program, which helps them to

improve their nutritional habits. Get Fit is an amazing program. Being a trainer for this program

is extremely rewarding and beneficial to my future in the health and exercise science field.

Getting the experience to work with the IDD population has given me the opportunity to work on

my communication with clients and my ability to teach, which has already been a profession of

mine in dance. Since I am currently involved in GetFit I do not have a certificate of my hours

because the program is not over yet.
