Match Preview - Souths vs Redlands
Souths United entertain Redlands at Wakerley Park on Saturday night with a victory vital for both teams as they look to avoid being caught in a relegation dogfight.
Souths sit 12th on the table with 13 points, whilst the Devils have a 3-point advantage that sees them lie at 10th, although both sides are coming into the game on the back of defeats and lacking consistency.
Redlands would arguably be the more disappointed of the two, having recently suffered marginal defeats at home to Olympic (2-3) and Peninsula Power (1-2), something coach Peter Bannon knows they can ill afford to do if they are to improve on last year’s mid-table finish.
“It was one of our worst passing games last week but we still created enough chances that could have earned us a result,” Bannon said. “Against Souths we cannot start poorly and again the emphasis has to be on what we do as a team.”
Souths suffered a 1-5 defeat at Capalaba last week, although they had numerous key players missing and entered the game on the back of an impressive 3-1 home win against in-from Power.
Sitting six points adrift of the top six, coach Roy Wiseman insists the squad need to be realistic of the team’s prospects until the end of the season, with the main focus on avoiding the drop.
“The players always like to have a goal and they would obviously like to make the finals but our focus is to stay in the division, especially given half of our team is missing,” Wiseman said. “The spirit is good- it’s just that we are losing so many players.”
Redlands have found themselves falling just short of maximum points on numerous occasions this season and Peter Bannon is hopeful his players can string the results required during the last stretch of the home and away season that will see them ascend up the table.
“We are at that stage of the season where points are very important and we must focus on each game as it comes,” he said. “By now the tactical, technical and physical work is done- now the emphasis is on the players to perform.”

Souths United
Even though the Devils sit only three points behind 6th placed Peninsula Power, Bannon insists the focus needs to remain on staying adrift of the bottom, especially with their next three opponents being teams outside the top six.
“There are a lot of teams in close proximity to us but the focus is not on a finals spot,” Bannon said. “We have to be realistic and aim to break away from the bottom sides- we don’t want to be involved in any relegation battles. At this stage the results on a weekly basis are more important than setting targets.”
Souths will be as equally hungry for maximum points at home, where they have been undefeated in their last two encounters and are yet to fail in hitting the back of the net.
“Although we have lost players in key positions, we are playing at home and our focus has to be on winning the game,” coach Roy Wiseman said. “We have to try to keep Rhys Meredith away from the game as much as possible.”
It is a clash that will provide much relief to the victor in terms of staying away from relegation worries and a repeat of the exciting Round 3 clash between the pair- that ultimately ended in a 2-1 victory to the Devils- is sure to provide plenty of goals and thrills.
