Let Justice Roll
“The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for
authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise.
Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer
rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before
company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their
teachers.”
As you read this quote when do you think it was written, after the riots that
have rocked our towns and cities this year or even about the social revolution
in youth culture back in the 60‟s?
The answer is actually quite surprising; although it can‟t be totally
verified it is attributed to Socrates as recorded by one of his devotees Plato
in about 400BC. It seems as though nothing changes and history just
simply repeats itself!
However, the source of the quote may be up for debate, the claim „history
repeats itself‟ is also bitterly disputed, and according to my Church
History Lecturer from college days it does not repeat itself! But from a
non academic stance it seems to me we reflect history and ignore the
lessons of the past at our peril and can systematically re-write history to
suit our own bias and sensitivities.
Take for example the many books that have been written to dispel and
disprove the Holocaust of the last war did not happen which is why
Dwight D. Eisenhower said on finding the truth of the death camps "Get it
all on record now - get the films - get the witnesses -because somewhere
down the road of history some bastard will get up and say that this never
happened."
What ever the reasons behind the events that have shocked our society
over the past months the one lesson from history whether its a repeat or
reflection is if we ignore the voice of those who feel as though society is
ignoring them, we ignore the call for justice and fairness, we ignore the
disenfranchised, we ignore people being made to feel worthless by the loss
of employment, we ignore agreed contracts and policies being changed
without negotiation, we ignore the lack of opportunities for our youth, we
ignore the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer, we ignore our
elderly being forgotten and seen as a burden on our communal purse, we
ignore the mentally and physically disadvantaged as their worth is reduced
to how much their care costs etc etc etc. We ignore these cries and voices
at our peril and much of what we have seen on our own streets will not go
away and will remain a latent threat to all of us.
In a society not too dissimilar to ours that ignored the cry of the poor and
marginalized the prophet Amos spoke these words on behalf of God, “But
let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing
stream!” (Amos Chapter 5 v 24) Yes, these words were spoken to
religious and political leaders but these words echo the call of our society
at the moment. Let‟s learn from history and listen to the cries of our peo-
ple for all our sakes.

Although we had no usual meetings during August, we have been
busy. A group of our members and their friends enjoyed a brilliant
day at Blenheim Palace.
Our thanks for David Walsh for driving the minibus, for Christy
Nolan for organising the trip and for Katy for acquiring the mini
bus. Also we had a Garden Party in David and Barbara’s garden,
where we enjoyed Pimms and lemonade with strawberries and
cream.
Our next meeting will be held on Monday 19th September at
7.30pm—our speaker will be Mrs L Harper who will come and talk
about Victorian and Modern Beading. The cost to visitors is £2
which includes refreshments. Please come along, you will be very
welcome. Jenny Dellar
Neighbourhood Watch
NHW has been active in the village in the last couple of months, with updates now being put on the village website as we receive them from the Community Police. These details of different incidents in surrounding areas can be quite helpful to know about, so please do check out the NHW page on the village website.
The village NHW co-ordinators along with the help of two people in
the village were successful in the detention of seven persons in the
village who were suspected of being illegal immigrants. The police response was quick and efficient. Please do not hesitate to contact them if you have any concerns.
The contact telephone numbers are also printed there these are:
0300 011 1222 or 01604 432436.
It would also be helpful if you could let the co-ordinators know of
any incidents.
Please contact Christy and Margaret on 831020
Your Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinators will be at the village fete
with free antitheft number plates screws.
Information sheets will be available. Please come along to meet us.
We will be pleased to offer any help we can.

New Bus Timetable A new bus timetable comes into being on 5th September. A copy of the timetable has been inserted into this newsletter on a separate sheet and is also available on the Rothersthorpe website (www. Rothersthorpe.info)
ROTHERSTHORPE WEB SITE
The village web site (www.rothersthorpe.info) has
several new articles including the new bus
timetable and links to charitable events supported
by some people in the village. There are also
regular updates from Christy Nolan covering
Neighbourhood Watch relevant to the village.
If you have any news that you would like to share
with others in the village then please add it to the site yourself
(it really isn’t that difficult and I can always edit anything that
goes wrong, not that it will) or alternatively send it to me and I’ll
copy the item onto the site in your name. If you have any
suggestions to improve the site then please let me know and I’ll
try to include them.
Best wishes, Steve McCarthy [email protected]

Police Cadets Join
Northamptonshire Police
Northamptonshire Police has welcomed a group of 25 Volunteer Police Cadets
to the Force. The exciting new scheme was officially launched at the Force‟s
Open Day on Saturday 30 July.
The cadets, aged between 16 and 18 years old, will learn and take part in polic-
ing activities and contribute to the Force's events and successes. The group will
meet once a week to carry out a full programme of activities, including:
Self Defence
First Aid
Team Building
Drill
Weekly activity, such as:
Classroom scenarios
Statement writing
Fitness & health (outdoor activities)
Operational duties (assisting with Operation Guardian)
Educational visits/scenarios – e.g. Custody, Traffic
Role plays
The cadets will be undertaking a BTEC Level 2 Certificate in Public Service as
part of their training.
Assistant Chief Constable Martin Jelley said: “Northamptonshire Police is de-
lighted to announce the launch of our Police Cadet Scheme.
“The programme will expose young people to a variety of elements of Polic-
ing, encourage them to foster good citizenship and help to prepare those cadets
who may continue on to university and careers after completing the scheme.
“The two year scheme will be exciting for both the Force and young people
who will have the opportunity to take additional and relevant educational quali-
fications whilst serving as cadets.”
Community Safety Chief Inspector Dave Lawson is leading the scheme. He
said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for young members of our community to
work with their local Police Officers, Police Community Support Officers and
Special Constables to gain valuable skills and abilities, develop their personal
skills and confidence, as well as experience of working within public services.
They will provide a valuable contribution to the communities of our county.
“The cadets were very engaged with activities taking place at our recent Open
Day, and it was clear for all to see that their involvement on the day played a
valuable role in contributing to such a successful event.”
An introduction evening was held at Force Headquarters at the end of June
where anyone interested in becoming a cadet was invited to come along and
speak with the team who were implementing the new scheme.
The final group of cadets were selected from those who remained interested
and were successful after a recruitment process.
Applications are currently closed, but to register your interest in joining the
scheme in the future please email [email protected].
The Force will be looking to recruit a new cohort in early 2012 if the scheme
is successful.

BIKES Despite the article in the last issue about Bike
Nuisance, the situation has not improved. The
children concerned live in the village therefore it
is in the parents own interest to ensure their
children are not riding their bikes in a dangerous
manner. This neglectful attitude not only puts the children’s lives
at risk but also the drivers.
Whilst on the subject of bikes, Steve and Jane McCarthy are
cycling 50 miles at the end of September for Cynthia Spencer and
Macmillan Nurses. If you would like to sponsor them please ring
01604 830321 and they will visit you with their sponsor form.
Thank you Steve & Jane McCarthy
COST OF DOMESTIC HEATING OIL
Northamptonshire ACRE is concerned
about the level of fuel poverty across the
county and is looking at practical ways of
being able to help our local, rural
communities. One of our sister organisa-
tions, Oxfordshire Rural Community
Council (ORCC) has recently set up a
new social enterprise that will reduce the
cost of domestic heating oil with each order simply by joining a
community-based countywide oil buying syndicate.
By bringing communities together throughout the county and making
the most of joint buying power, huge savings can be made and passed
on directly to people whose fuel costs are high simply because they
have oil-fired central heating. By operating county-wide, the scheme
makes it possible for new or existing local community oil buying groups
to make the most of their collective purchasing power. Members pay a
small annual fee to join (which is generally recouped in the savings from
the first order!) before negotiations take place with every oil company
that supplies premises in the county to ensure the best price is
achieved.
Thus far, the Oxfordshire scheme is proving a great success, so we are
conducting some initial research to find out what level of interest there
is to run a similar scheme in Northamptonshire. Therefore, we would be
extremely grateful if you would complete the very short survey on our
website by clicking on this link:
www.northantsacre.org.uk/2011/07/21/.
Alternatively, you can contact Beth Milne, Rural Officer at
Northamptonshire ACRE on 01604 825889. Thank you.
Thank You Steve and Jo Jennings would like to say a THANK YOU to all those who attended their 25th Wedding Anniversary party at the Walnut Tree in July. It was organised as a surprise to Jo and it certainly was that, as all those there will testify.
Thank you for all the lovely cards etc. There was a nice photo frame amongst the items with no label on, so if it was you would you kindly let us know so we can say Thanks! We have lived in the village for 20 years this month (September) and would like to say thanks to all the people who have shown kindness to us over the years (you know who you are) particularly to Jo with lifts everywhere before she could drive.
