CHURCH CALENDAR FOR FEBRUARY 2012

What Is In An Hour!

The dining room at The Rectory gets used on average a dozen or so times a

year, both for entertaining and meetings. At a meeting I was chairing not

long after Christmas I began to wonder why the meeting, which is normally

a positive and constructive meeting, seemed to be going so slow! The

penny finally dropped, I‘d forgotten to change the time on the small clock

I was glancing at on the display cabinet when the clocks went back in Oc-

tober 2011!

This realisation sent me into ‗Grumpy Old Man‘ mode as I thought about all

the inconvenience that altering clocks for summer-time causes.

The timers on the microwave and oven, central heating and television, all

need changing. As for those fiddly little buttons on the various wrist

watches and alarm clocks - just plain drudgery and as already said incon-

venient! Even when all those are seen to and I go to drive my car, because

the time changes automatically on the car radio signal, I have to wait for

the next hourly pips, while in the car with the ignition on for the time to

change. Why can't they leave things alone?

They tell me up in the north of Scotland, even more difficulties are cre-

ated, because the hours of daylight are so much different the nearer we

get to the Arctic Circle. Farmers, too, create a fuss. Their trouble seems

to be that chickens can't lay eggs an hour earlier, nor can cows alter their

milking-time. By contrast, government departments tell us we're over-

looking the benefits - complaining about the insignificant details, whilst

missing the manifold advantages. All this has been going on ever since the

daylight hours were first changed. And I don't suppose we'll live to see

the end of it either as the debate on a political level is not about British

Summer time being scrapped but British DOUBLE Summer Time being in-

troduced!

Going to church might be thought of in a similar way. Why dress up - just

for one hour? Why talk the children out of their homework, or leisure-

time, and expect them to keep quiet whilst we worship? Yet all this is

selfishness - thinking of how it adversely affects ourselves!

Belonging to Christ isn't an unwholesome chore. He, like daylight saving

time, can shed more light on our lives. Spread more joy; brighten our days.

Every day with Him is different, exciting, and opening the door to eternal

life itself.

John was told to put this into the Bible for us. In Revelation Chapter 21

verse 5, we read, ―I am making everything new!‖ Then he said, ―Write this

down, for these words are trustworthy and true.‖

Have a good time!

New Northamptonshire Police

Crime Prevention web page

Members of the public can now find all the

information they need about personal and

home security on a dedicated new web page launched by Northamptonshire Police.

The new page provides a „one stop shop‟ for anyone who

wants to find out more about how to prevent crime and

reduce their risk of becoming a victim.

The section incorporates a range of information, from how

to make your home and car more secure, to how to set up a

Neighbourhood Watch scheme, together with information

about business and rural crime as well as advice on how to

prevent fraud and improve online security.

There is useful advice on property marking, which can make

valuables less attractive to thieves and help link criminals

back to crime scenes or identify handlers of stolen goods. It

can also help police identify stolen goods so they can be re-

turned to their rightful owner.

In addition, the site hosts an Interactive Virtual Neighbour-

hood (courtesy of Leicestershire Constabulary), which

offers another way to get useful advice about how to

protect property and prevent different types of crime.

Crime Prevention Manager Laura Major said: “The new sections bring all our crime prevention advice and related

subjects into one place and we hope it will make it easier for

members of the public to find the information they need to

help them better protect their home and property.”

People can access the new pages by visiting

www.northants.police.uk and clicking on the crime

prevention link on the home page.

the site according to the hit counter but very little

participation. There are plenty of opportunities to

have your say about events in the village or if you

would like me to add them then please let me know.

Latest postings: Village Planter Sponsors— Andy Bett‘s Outlaw

5 ‘LENT LUNCHES’ TO ENJOY AROUND THE VILLAGE

ON WEDNESDAYS THROUGH FEBRUARY AND MARCH.

ALL WELCOME. 12.30PM - 2PM.

BRING A FRIEND, EAT, CHAT AND THEN MAKE A DONATION AS YOU LIKE.

YOUR MONEY WILL GO STRAIGHT OUT TO

AN ORPHANAGE IN IGANGA (UGANDA)

At this time of year, on a Wednesday, ‘lent lunches’ are hosted in differ-

ent houses around the village. They are very informal, simple lunches, of soup, fresh bread and then cheese – we sometimes get home-made cakes as well but that depends on who’s house we are in!

In the past, monies raised have gone towards the building of a clinic

and nurses accommodation in the remote village of Namunsaala in Uganda.

This project is now complete so this year the church have agreed to

donate everything we raise over Lent to an orphanage in Iganga. Feed-ing 25 children every day is a challenge, so every penny helps.

Please drop in to as many as you can make.

No need to ‘book’!

29th February - Julia (Barn House, 8 North Street) 7th March - Lisa (The Chequers, North Street) 14th March - AJ (Nutwood Cottage, The Lane) 21st March - Chris (5 St Johns Close) 28th March - Tracey (59 Church Street)

Anti-Social Behaviour

Please be aware it has been

reported that over the past

three Friday evenings during

January, three young lads

have been seen drinking on the hump back bridge controlled by

traffic lights between Rothersthorpe and the Swan Valley housing

estate. On each occasion when the youths had gone, the crown of

the bridge was covered in broken glass.

Please take care especially if you are on a bike as these shards

could puncture your tyres, the police are aware.

Lent ―Talent" Challenge

in aid of Church Repairs Can you double your money like the good servant in

the parable (read the story in Matthew‘s gospel

Chapter 25 verse 14).

The six weeks leading up to Easter are known as Lent. Instead of

giving up something during Lent, why not take up the challenge to

turn £1, £2 or £5 into more. We‘ll be pleased to hear from anyone

who would like to take part and we can let you have the ‗starter‘

sum.

The idea is to be as imaginative as you like. Buy a bottle of car

shampoo and wash a few cars/ bake a cake for a friend/ plant some

seeds and sell the plants. Or maybe just donate an hour of your

time babysitting or dog walking for a small fee.

Lent starts on 22nd February – get your thinking caps on.

With thanks Val Bridges 832442

The Creation (as told by a dog)

On the first day, God created the dog

On the second day, God created man to serve the dog

On the third day, God created all the animals of the

earth to serve as potential food for the dog.

On the fourth day, God created honest toil so that man could

labour for the good of the dog

On the fifth day, God created the tennis ball so that the dog might

or might not retrieve it.

On the sixth day, God created veterinary science to keep the dog

happy and the man broke.

On the seventh day, God tried to rest, but he had to walk the dog. Provided by a caring dogwalker

Memorial Garden

The bulbs in the memorial garden planted

by the school children and other

volunteers will be shortly coming

through. Please make sure that they are

not trampled on and that children stay on

the grassed area, not on the gardens.

Many thanks – Parish Council

Church Repairs—the continuing saga

Just to keep you up to date (briefly!) with the state of play….

We now have all estimates in for the work on the roof, the

windows and the stonework. There is

some debate about whether the South

aisle roof needs full replacement, or

whether repairs will suffice. Total ‘worst‘

case spend is about £50-60,000.

The money raised so far is £1,300 – many

thanks to all those who have organised

events. I hear the New Year‘s Eve dance

was a great success.

Whilst we decide on who to commission

for the main repairs, there are two

windows which are almost falling out, so

we shall start by replacing those, and

having a thorough investigation of the roof.

Keep the ideas flowing for fund-raising and we would love to hear

from you if you‘d like to make a donation (either in general or

something specific, maybe in memory of someone special)

Planters Require Sponsors

C live Appleton has proposed

an opportunity for individuals

and businesses within the

village to adopt free flower

planters that could be placed,

one either side, at the four

entrances to the village

(Northampton side - Banbury Lane, Pattishall side – Banbury

Lane, Kislingbury Road and Milton Road). For this to be

successful there needs to be at least 4 sponsors prepared to

take on the responsibility for positioning the planters and

maintaining them throughout the year.

T his could be undertaken by one or more of the clubs or

groups within the village or businesses that function within the

village. The sponsors would be allowed to add their sponsorship

details on the planter if they wished and would be responsible

for making sure each planter is kept weed free, watered during

dry periods, full of growing medium and stocked with attractive

plants or bulbs.

P lease contact me before 27th February (next Parish Council

meeting) if you would be interested in sponsoring a planter on

01604 830321 or [email protected].

Sadly the Dog Poo problem has

‗plopped ‗ in Banbury Lane

A night worker who both goes to work

and returns from work in the dark, rang

me to say he had been experiencing

problems with dog excrement in Banbury

Lane.

With poor lighting he has difficulty avoiding the inevitable when a

dog owner does not collect their dog pile. The worst area is from

the garages in Banbury Lane to the crossroads so at least be

warned.

To add insult to injury one dog owner did collect up his dog‘s

efforts in a plastic bag and then deposited them in the gentleman‘s

green bin. (wrong bin too for plastic bags).

I think the message is all too clear here. Please irresponsible Dog

owners (I know there are thankfully many responsible ones in the

village) pick up and take home in a plastic bag your dog muck.

The Crime of Metal Theft

Metal theft is becoming an epidemic,

and urgent action is needed to put a

stop to these sickening attacks. The

Government should back the police in

their fight against metal theft by

pledging to change the law to make it easier to stop this

organised crime. The vandalising and theft of war memorials is

shocking and disgraceful, undermining the respect that all our

communities want to show to fallen heroes. In addition

households face repeated power cuts, commuters face increasing

delays, churches and public buildings are being damaged, all as a

result of escalating metal theft. The theft of electric wires is

even putting lives at risk.

This is a matter for everybody in the community, but Neighbour-

hood Watch and Home Watch can lead the way. Firstly, we all

need to be alert to the situation and keep watch for vans and

trucks driving around our streets looking for the opportunity to

steal metal, and reporting the details to the local police or

Crimestoppers (0800 555 111).

No item of intelligence is ever too small; it might be the final

piece of the jigsaw and in some cases there might even be the

possibility of gaining a reward.

Secondly, be aware of workmen removing metal items in the

street. The thieves are using uniforms, stolen vans etc. One

witness recently reported that they did not look like real

workmen… they were working too fast.

Thirdly, members also need to be on the lookout for unlicensed

venues where stolen metal is cleaned up, often by burning off the

covering and where the identifying marks are removed, before

being taken to the licensed dealers.

Neighbourhood Watch

It seems as though we have had a couple of

relatively quiet months in our village, although

there have been reports from neighbouring

villages of thefts from vehicles, ( the vehicle in

question was literally left for about two minutes) and criminal

damage to cars, so we need to be alert.

I believe also that there has been a scrap metal theft in Berry

Close recently.

We did have the man in the village trying to sell mattresses, but I

did report him to the police,

We have had reports of a lot of glass being broken on the bridge

into town (traffic lights), this again has been reported and it

seems as though the sweeper, from the building site, is including

the bridge in his sweep.

As always please be alert and report any suspicious activity to the

NHW line,

Our local line number is 01604 432436 (standard rate charges)

Or the new number for all non urgent calls to the police is 101

(charge 15p)

Also if you could inform us on 01604 831020

Hope we all have a crime free month

Christy and Margaret

The police and local authorities need to know.

Finally, members who live in the vicinity of licensed and

unlicensed sites must be alert to vehicles turning up outside the

normal working hours. Again details should be passed to the local

police.

News from Rothersthorpe School

December was a busy month as always in

school and we were delighted that so many

parents, grandparents and village residents

were able to join us for our Christmas

talent show – the ‗X‘ mas Factor! Following

two performances of the show and our

Christmas lunch and party, the Autumn

term ended on the usual high note with our Christingle and Nativity

service in church. Thank you to all the parents and villagers who

joined us and also contributed to our retiring collection in aid of the

Children‘s Eye Cancer Trust. This charity supports and advises

families of children who have been affected by Eye Cancer

(Retinoblasoma). We were pleased to send them a cheque for £115.

After the service, parents joined us in the hall where members of

the church served teas and drew the Church Christmas raffle.

After the excitement of Christmas, the children

returned to school at the beginning of January and

enjoyed our annual school disco at the end of the

first week. We were also pleased to welcome back

M&M Productions, the touring theatre company,

who delighted us all with this year‘s panto, Dick

Whittington! On the same day, Class 2 hosted a day of themed

activities for their friends from Spring Lane school in

Northampton, who really enjoyed joining us for the day.

Some of our after school clubs are put on hold at

this time of year, due to the dark nights and bad

weather, but many children are still taking part in

our indoor clubs - Hotshots Basketball, Food Tech-

nology, Cross Stitch and Class Two Art and Crafts.

Following our success in the qualifying heats at the beginning of

December, our boys‘ football team took part in the Campion cluster

finals in January. After a series of closely fought battles, Milton

Primary school were the victorious Campion cluster team.

We would like to thank one of our parents, Andy Peaks for his help

with coaching the boys at football club and over a number of cold

lunchtimes!

All our children are currently learning some basic sign language to

help them to take part in a record breaking event in February

organised by Sign Health, a healthcare charity for deaf people. At

exactly 2.45pm on Wednesday 8th February, thousands of children

from over 950 schools across the country will all be singing and

signing the same song at the same time!

School closes for the half term break on Friday 10th

February and the children return on Monday 20th

February. Carol Watt

Village Survey

I n the next few days you

will be receiving a survey

through your letter box. This

survey has been devised by a

hard working group of people

within the village for the

benefit of the village.

B y getting your views and

your hopes for the fu-

ture we can develop a plan

that will shape our future in terms of transport, work, leisure ac-

tivities, etc. The more people who respond the better chance we

have of reflecting the needs of everyone in the village.

O ur environment is constantly changing and if we don‘t become

involved in these changes then it is quite likely they will be

done to us. Just take a look at the new development taking place on

Banbury Lane next to the canal and you will appreciate how change

happens. You have an opportunity to shape the future of our village

and if you don‘t become engaged in this exercise then you will have

to accept whatever the future may bring.

T he survey delivery team are there to help you

with any questions you may have and will be

collecting the surveys at a time to suit you approxi-

mately two weeks after delivery but if you have

any questions then please contact me: 01604

Dogs on Lead

It has been reported that a sheep on a local field

has been partly savaged by a dog. The animal was

alive but its rear quarters were badly damaged.

Please make sure your dog is kept on a lead when

crossing fields with farm animals in them, to

prevent unnecessary distress.

Parish Council Meeting

The next Parish Council meetings will be

held on Monday 27th February and

Monday 2nd April at 7.30pm in the

Committee Room at the Village Hall.

Mrs Christy Nolan has been co-opted

onto the Parish council following Peter McCosh‘s resignation.

At the beginning of December John Morphy resigned as a Parish

Councillor and at the recent Parish council meeting in January

Mr Jeff Morphy was co-opted as a new Parish Councillor.

As always anyone is welcome to attend and address the Parish

Council in the public open session at the beginning of the meeting.

Please come along and participate in your local community decision

making process.
