03 March 2011 To the Rotarians of District 9500 My dear brothers and sisters in Rotary: More than 75 years ago, Rotary’s founder, Paul Harris, wrote, “The world is constantly changing, and Rotary must be prepared to change with it.” It is a truism that has held through decades and across continents, in tens of thousands of Rotary clubs throughout the world. Change is why we are here, and what we strive for. We are not satisfied with the lowest common denominator, for Rotary is anything but common. We see the world not as it is, but as it might be; and we believe, as Mohandas Gandhi said, that we must be the change we wish to see in the world. In your clubs and your homes, throughout your district, each of you has the potential to be the change of which you dream. In this Rotary year, as we Reach within to Embrace Humanity, I ask all of you to strive without fear or limitation, to open your minds and your hearts to the possibilities of Rotary service. Do not hesitate, do not falter; rather stay steadfastly on the path that is set forth for you. Let me paraphrase the poet Robert Frost and say ... But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, Let’s enjoy the journey. Sincerely,

Kalyan Banerjee President, 2011-2012

DISTRICT GOVERNOR Eric Russell (Julie) Phone 08 8357 8898 Mobile 0402 315 292 Email [email protected] Eric was born in Queensland and served an apprenticeship as a boilermaker. In 1971 whilst a professional rugby league player in Port Moresby, he crashed his car and sustained a spinal cord injury. Eric was rehabilitated in Brisbane and as he says it was “the beginning of a different life path”. Inspired by athletes training at the spinal injuries unit Eric represented Australia at 18 international competitions, winning 26 gold medals (four Paralympic) and setting 14 world records in field events. In administration he served on state, national and then international committees, in addition he is a level 2 Coach and International Classifier. In 1985, Eric was inducted into the Rotary Club of Adelaide, moving to Adelaide Parks in 1989. He twice served as President of Adelaide Parks. At District level Eric served two years as Assistant Governor and is on the Marketing and Promotions committee. In 1981 Eric was awarded an MBE and an Advance Australia Award, in 2003 a PHF and Sapphire this year. Eric was made a Life Member of Wheelchair Sports SA in 2007. Eric’s hobbies include motor sport, both rugby codes, cricket and, as Julie says, the Crows. However, quality time is spent in his home workshop making and mending all manner of things. Meeting Julie, who also represented Australia in wheelchair sport, and deciding to marry her in 1979 after only thirteen days in each other’s company was, as Eric put it, “the best quick decision of my life”. Julie’s support was pivotal in Eric’s decision to seek nomination as District Governor. With the belief that the strength of Rotary is in its clubs and club strength is its members, Eric is excited at the opportunity to serve those members.

DISTRICT GOVERNOR ELECT Marie Dorrington (Ken) Phone 08 8269 3398 Mobile 04 1786 3316 Email [email protected] Marie was born in South Australia where she has spent most of her life. Educated at secondary, tertiary and post graduate level in Adelaide, she has been involved in teaching and educational leadership since that time. In 1986, she became Principal of St Mary’s College, a role she had for more than 18 years. This passion for learning has continued with a part-time consultancy in education which has enabled her to travel widely. A member of the Rotary Club of Adelaide West since 1997 when she became a member in response to the involvement of the club in supporting St Mary’s College, Marie has been President of the Club (2001-2002) and has enjoyed being involved in a range of activities within it. At District level, Marie has been involved in a number of roles, including chairing the Group Study Exchange Committee for two years, District Secretary in 2008-09 and Assistant Governor Group 1 for 2009-10 and 2010-11. Marie was also Host Counsellor for an Ambassadorial Scholar from Japan in 2009 and 2010, and she is a Club Visioning Facilitator. Marie and Ken have two wonderful children (and a wonderful daughter-in-law and son-in-law) and are grandparents of Alexander, Emma and Hamish, with whom they love spending time. They also share an interest in reading, travel, football and gardening. Long passionate about ensuring that an opportunity is given to all people of all ages, cultures and geographical areas to be healthy, active, cared for and creative members of a peaceful, sustainable and productive society, Marie hopes that she is able to continue to contribute to the wonderful work of Rotary to help bring this closer for all.

She then moved to Yorke Peninsula and lived on a farm north of Ardrossan for many years and her 3rd son was born. Barbara became very involved with sport, in particular Calisthenics, and this led to the opportunity to move back to Adelaide when Kirsti was selected as a member of the Junior State team in 1982. Barbara then took up the position of chaperone to two State Senior Calisthenics teams in 1984 & 1985. Barbara joined the Apple & Pear Growers Association of SA Inc in 1988 and worked with the Association for almost 20 years. Barbara became involved in Rotary as a ‘guest’ for many years, assisting with fundraisers and attending Club and District functions.
