Rotary Club of Somerton Park Inc. | Chartered 7 April 1988 Club Bulletin We've had a producve cou- ple of weeks with the Harvey Norman BBQ on August 9- 10th to raise money for St Mary's Kitchen, and helping out the Rotary Club of Glenelg in the Cold Plunge last for Those in Need last Sunday to raise money for St Vinnies and Anglicare Glenelg. A big thanks to all our members who put their me in on the BBQ and who support- ed myself and Peter Ochota to take the plunge - with the water temperature at 13ºC the beauful sunny morning had lile effect other than to cheer our spirits as we slowly froze. The cold plunge was a great idea and I can see great potenal for this to grow into something much bigger in the future for the Glenelg club and for Rotary in general. Well done to Jessie Vun and the rest of the club for a well run event and also geng the plunge promoted on News.com and the local media. Thanks to Mahew Carey and Rajni Vasan from the Blind Sporng Council for coming in to speak to us again last week. It is always a pleasure to hear about the great work they are doing and the hu- mour with which Mahew recounts the challenges he faces going about his daily life. This week we had another inspiring TED talk presented to us by Mi- chael Garland from Ziauddin Yousafzai, the father of Malala the young Pakinstani school girl shot in the head for her acvism to promote women's rights and their right to an educaon. It gave us a sobering reminder of how lucky we are to enjoy the free- Brenley very cleverly sent around a Cold Plungespon- sorship sheet which saw him net a bucket of notes. Peter O decided it was so easy he might have a plunge too (albeit Merediths suggeson!) And I got the impres- sion the Board is sll working on a date for the wine boling, but we were assured the vintage was first class this year. Our guests were Mahew Carey and Raj from the Blind Sporng Council. They are both old friends who we have supported for some me. Mahew supplied some interesng insights into being blind by telling us about the challenges associated with simply moving house and having to learn a new transport roune. Raj in- formed us about the latest developments at the Coun- Presidents Paragraph Meengs - 12 Aug/19th August 19th Aug 2014 doms that we do in this country and the work that is sll to be done around the world, not just to feed and clothe people, but to educate, promote peace, goodwill and understanding. Finally as I menoned at our last meeng, next Tues- day's meeng on the 26th August will be an open club forum. So get your thinking caps on and come to next week with any and all ideas or comments you have on how you think our club is travelling, what we are doing well, what we could do beer, news ideas for fundrais- ing or community service, or anything that you feel is important and needs to be discussed. Next week is your chance to get involved so make sure you give it some thought and come prepared

Club Bulletin

We've had a productive cou-ple of weeks with the Harvey Norman BBQ on August 9-10th to raise money for St Mary's Kitchen, and helping out the Rotary Club of Glenelg in the Cold Plunge last for Those in Need last Sunday to raise money for St Vinnies and Anglicare Glenelg. A big thanks to all our members

who put their time in on the BBQ and who support-ed myself and Peter Ochota to take the plunge - with the water temperature at 13ºC the beautiful sunny morning had little effect other than to cheer our spirits as we slowly froze. The cold plunge was a great idea and I can see great potential for this to grow into something much bigger in the future for the Glenelg club and for Rotary in general. Well done to Jessie Vun and the rest of the club for a well run event and also getting the plunge promoted on News.com and the local media.

Thanks to Matthew Carey and Rajni Vasan from the Blind Sporting Council for coming in to speak to us again last week. It is always a pleasure to hear about the great work they are doing and the hu-mour with which Matthew recounts the challenges he faces going about his daily life. This week we had another inspiring TED talk presented to us by Mi-chael Garland from Ziauddin Yousafzai, the father of Malala the young Pakinstani school girl shot in the head for her activism to promote women's rights and their right to an education. It gave us a sobering reminder of how lucky we are to enjoy the free-

around a ‘Cold Plunge’ spon-

sorship sheet which saw him

net a bucket of notes. Peter O

decided it was so easy he

might have a plunge too

(albeit Meredith’s suggestion!) And I got the impres-

sion the Board is still working on a date for the wine

bottling, but we were assured the vintage was first

class this year.

Our guests were Matthew Carey and Raj from the Blind

Sporting Council. They are both old friends who we

have supported for some time. Matthew supplied some

interesting insights into being blind by telling us about

the challenges associated with simply moving house

doms that we do in this country and the work that is still to be done around the world, not just to feed and clothe people, but to educate, promote peace, goodwill and understanding.

Finally as I mentioned at our last meeting, next Tues-day's meeting on the 26th August will be an open club forum. So get your thinking caps on and come to next week with any and all ideas or comments you have on how you think our club is travelling, what we are doing well, what we could do better, news ideas for fundrais-ing or community service, or anything that you feel is important and needs to be discussed. The Four Way Test

Of The Things We Think, Say or Do:

Is it the TRUTH?

Is it FAIR to all Concerned?

Will it build GOODWILL and

cil, including their new ‘Eye support a star’ campaign

for fundraising and their sponsorship package.

On the 19th we began with a report of Brenley’s ‘Cold

Plunge’ in which he was joined by Peter O. They each

raised a significant amount through sponsorship. Mi-

chael let us know that the most recent HN BBQ also

raised about $960. Brenley informed us that next

week will be an open forum for any members to raise

any issues or ideas which need to be aired or investi-

gated.

In lieu of a speaker we enjoyed a TED talk which was

by the father of the young Pakistani girl Malala

Yousafzai who was shot by the Taliban in 2012 for

transgressing cultural boundaries associated with the

place of women and obedience in patriarchal and

tribal societies.

John Yard again drew to our attention the devastation

inflicted by feral dogs on native wildlife and stock in

the north of our state. There was a general expres-

sion of willingness to see if a movement could be

started from within Rotary to help address this prob-

lem. A number of suggestions were made including

the possible invitation of an authoritative speaker

who had a wide grasp of the various issues con-

fronting the interested and responsible parties. The

National Report on Assessment of Wild Dogs in Aus-

tralia published in April 2014 is worth a look.
