CLUB MEETING 19 JAN 2011 (Part 2)by Potter, Chris

Attendance: 68%; 31 Members; 22 Guests; 0 Makeups

Meeting Chairman's Report:

It was a great pleasure to have the opportunity at our last meeting to introduce PaulineWalker as our guest speaker. Pauline became known to the club through the Victorian Business Icon Competition, acompetition for young people in business which she likened to a cross between theApprentice and Australian Idol and was a competition the club sponsored a candidate forlast year. Pauline set the context of her talk, which focused on Climate Change, by talking abouther own journey and connection with nature having grown up on her parents farm inSouth Western Australia and then through Northern Australia and the Kimberly's andPerth on her way to Melbourne.

The key theme of Pauline's talk was on Climate Change from a perspective of looking atthe awareness of the impact our own personal everyday choices have on the environmentand our own personal carbon footprint. Through the organisation she has recently set up, Feeling to Footprint, Pauline talked ofthe concept of connect - feel - choose - speak. Pauline spoke with great passion and in avery personalised way, punctuated by some very scary statistics, about how simplechoices around what we eat and where we source it from can have a big impact on theenvironment and emphasised the small steps each of us could take to make a differencefor the environment. Climate change is always a topic that generates a lot of debate and the talk from Paulinewas no exception and prompted applause for the passion and commitment shedemonstrated and many questions both at the end and after the meeting. POLIO ACTION IN PAKISTAN >>>>by Gurney, Russell

Pakistan launches emergencyaction plan against PolioBy Dan Nixon A Responding to a sharp increase in the number of polio casesin Pakistan in 2010, the government has launched the National

Emergency Action Plan for Polio Eradication 2011. Developed by national andinternational health experts at the request of President Asif Ali Zardari, theplan’s two main goals are to stop polio outbreaks by mid-2011 and halttransmission of the disease by yearend. Pakistan was the only one of the world’s four polio-endemic countries to see anincrease in polio cases last year -- 142 compared with 89 in 2009. AndPakistan’s total accounted for more than 60 percent of all cases among thefour, which also include Afghanistan, India, and Nigeria.

That increase “was a cause of alarm for the nations of the world, who werepreparing to usher in, [in] the near future, a world without the scourge of thisdisease,” says health minister Makhdoom Shahabuddin. “Failure is no option. We have come this far after years of efforts with the support of ourinternational partners, and we must now finish the job with a more focusedapproach toward the last remaining bottlenecks that threaten to reverse thegains we have made.” A national task force will oversee implementation of the plan, which is aimed atreaching children in high-risk districts, mobile populations, and insecure areas. “There will be strict oversight of the plan at the national and provincial levelsthrough monitoring cells,” Zardari said at a 24 January ceremony in Islamabadto launch the plan. “We shall be working on a fast-track emergency plan withthe support of our security forces to access children and households in thesecurity-sensitive areas.” Mobilizing clubsRotarian coordinators assigned by the Pakistan PolioPlus Committee aremobilizing Rotary clubs to provide support in the country’s four provinces. Clubmembers will assist with the effort “to cover every nook and corner of thecountry,” says Aziz Memon, chair of the committee. “We are committed to apolio-free Pakistan.” The plan’s progress will be evaluated by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative’sindependent monitoring board, established in 2010 to assess the GPEI’seffectiveness in fulfilling its 2010-12 strategic plan. Rotary is a spearheadingpartner of the initiative, along with the World Health Organization, UNICEF, andthe U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. At the launch ceremony, Zardari thanked Rotary International and the otherglobal partners for their support of the emergency action plan. In recognition ofRotary’s role in the drive toward polio eradication in Pakistan, he awarded thePresident’s Award for Pride of Performance to Memon and the Star of GoodConduct to International PolioPlus Committee Chair Robert S. Scott. “We need this spirit of partnership in the country at this critical time,” Zardarisaid. “No challenge is too big to stop us from saving our children from polio and

ROTARY ABC'sby Russell Gurney

'A' is for Attendance. In Rotary you are encouraged to attendanother Club when travelling or are unable to make it to yourown Club's regular meeting. This is known as making up. To beapplied for your attendance record, make ups must be madewithin 14 days either side of the meeting you were unable toattend. Rotarians that make the habit of making up contribute

much to their own Club by introducing ideas gleaned elsewhere andencourage members from the visited Club to return the favour and visit ourClub. Remember that "attendance without engagement" diminishes theRotary experience.
