R.C. Ashmore continue support to the Alzheimer’s Association Christmas event
Reporter: Heather Yarker
It has been a long standing project of the Rotary Club of Ashmore to host a Christmas Lunch for the Alzheimer’s Association clients and their carers.
This year with COVID-19, it was not possible to hold the Christmas lunch but Elaine Williams didn’t want them to miss out so 90 lovely Christmas baskets were packed and delivered for every client on the Gold Coast.
With funds provided from our Project account plus donations from club members and the community, the gift baskets were organised and put together with loving care by Elaine Williams and Carol Reinhardt
It was a huge effort by Elaine & Carol spread over several weeks of hard work and we thank them very much.
The Alzheimer’s management were thrilled to bits to receive the gift baskets which will be distributed throughout the Gold Coast over the next week, to arrive before Christmas.

It is with regret that I announce the death on Friday of a past member of
the Ashmore Rotary Club
Midori Ashenden was a beautiful lady, always helping others; she carried out
her work with the club in a quiet, efficient manner over a period of more
than 20 years .
Her daughter from Sydney and I were with her at the time of her passing.
Midori will be sadly missed. HEATHER YARKER
FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS WILL BE ADVISED

Clubs Combine for a Fabulous Christmas Dinner The 2020 Christmas Party at Carmody’s Restaurant, in the Southport Sharks Club was a combined event including Ashmore-Benowa Probus and the Nerang and Ashmore Rotary Clubs. The consensus of the 55 participants was that it was a resounding success.
The ambiance of the venue was ideal; the food left little to be desired and the service was superb. 19-year-old tenor, Jack Watson gave a stirring performance, ranging from popular opera, modern chart-toppers and musical theatre to Christmas Carols.
Hosted and compered by Barbara Healey, using her matron-style discipline to control the sometimes rowdy diners, she introduced the three club Presidents, Geoffrey Palmer (not the British actor), Norman Coventry and Carol Reinhardt. The party-goers were then privileged to witness the presentation of Paul Harris Fellowship Awards to two of the stalwarts of the Ashmore Club, Joan Adams and Nina Simson.
The event achieved the objective of any Christmas Party - all guests went home happy to have had a wonderful evening.

There is a very close association between the Rotary Club of Ashmore and the Probus Club of Ashmore-Benowa. Several of the Rotary members have joined Probus and many are ex-Rotary.
This partnership is a valued component of our policy of combining with other small organisations to better serve our community.
Recently, President Norman Coventry joined Ashmore-Benowa at their Christmas lunch. Below is a letter from President Carol Reinhardt to the Rotary Club of Ashmore
From the Editor’s Desk
Just in case we had forgotten, this week has given us another reminder that Covid-19 is still well and truly with us. The bubble on the Sydney northern beaches -in particular, the wealthy suburb of Avalon - is a stark warning that the virus can still strike anywhere at anytime.
It is apparent that many Queenslanders are becoming complacent. With three other members of my family, I attended the Lyric Theatre at QPAC on Friday evening to see an adaptation of Charles Dicken’s “A Christmas Carol”.
Simultaneously, in the Concert Hall, there was performed “The Spirit of Christmas”. Consequently, the foyer areas were very crowded.
QPAC website was very clear with their social distancing instructions “When waiting in the foyer, wear a Face Mask”. “During and at the end of the performance, Clap or Stamp your feet. Do not whistle or shout and do not leave in a rush. Phased departure will ease con-gestion”.
Out of several hundred people, I saw four masks; worn by my wife, my daughter, my grandson and myself. The end of a brilliant performance was marred by dozens screaming and shouting for more. After the curtain came down, there was a mad rush for the doors. We sat there dumbfounded and left after ten minutes when the rush had turned to a trickle.
Mmmm!
Well, the end of the first half of this Rotary year has ended with a bang.
A successful Alzeimer’s project, a couple of very profitable sausage sizzles, a bonanza Christmas raffle and a very successful Christmas dinner party. There have been some dedicated members working hard to achieve those results. Thanks in particular go to our Board members who worked - some still working - to get us to this position of recovery after the shutdown.
When I think back, our club has lost several members during this last year or so but we have gained some very productive and dedicated personalities. I believe that those remaining have worked a little harder and a little closer to reach our present status. Let’s give ourselves a hearty clap.
“And yet there is more”.
Those who will be working at the New Year’s Eve Revolution Run will be hearing from Denise within the next week or so. MICHAEL HYLAND
