The program isthe dream of Dr. Sir Randal Parrin 1997 and is a unique approachto teaching elementary schoolchildren the traditional values ofcharacter, ethics, honesty.compassion and civility. It has asits creed the Rotary 4 Way Testand each school day begins withits recitation followed by adiscussion of its principles.

Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and

better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all

concerned?

The program is financedby the Pasadena Rotary and is ajoint effort between PasadenaIndependent School District andthe Pasadena Rotary. Studentsstrive to pattern their l iferaccording to the sound guidelinesadvanced by “Early Act FirstKnight”. Club presidents often call on Rotary Youth Exchange Officers to

comment on the Rotary Student Exchange Program, and I think that is admirable. However, I get the feeling that much of what the YE Officers say falls on deafears. As much as we talk about RYE in our meetings, I’m just not sure that manyof our members either understand or appreciate the value of the program, andwhat a huge impact it has on the lives of so many people. YE Officers literallyhave to beg for host families each year, and when they beg, I get the feeling thatfew are listening. I am pretty sure that is the case because for a long time, I wasone of the people who were not listening.

For me, agreeing to become a host family the first time was pureimpulse. It had little to do with anyone’s appeals, except that I got tired of our YEOfficer begging and no one responding. So I said “I’ll do it.” That impulse changedthe way I looked at Rotary and to some extent; it changed my outlook on life.Having been a host family for the second time now, I realize just how importantthe program is to the Rotary ideal and Rotary mission worldwide. It is RotaryInternational defined. I don’t think there is a more important program to Rotarythan RYE. And the bottom line is that without host families, the program will notwork. Host families are the lynchpin between success and failure. That washammered home to me one recent weekend when I attended the Host FamilyAppreciation Dinner in Humble.

Initially, I was not going to attend that dinner because it was far fromhome and I thought I had other, more important things to do. As it turned out, there was nothing I could be doing during at that time that would have been moreimportant. That event culminated a very interesting and rewarding week as a hostparent. I’d like to share that week with you so that perhaps, we could find a wayto communicate not only the need for host families, but the criticality in sustainingsuch an important program.

It wasn’t a particularly remarkable week. We didn’t go to any exoticplaces or see any exciting events or happenings. In looking back, what strikes memost about the week was that it was just a normal week with a normal Americanfamily (well, normal except for me I suppose.) Marie began the week very stressedand frustrated, and in somewhat of a foul mood, principally because of school. The fact is that Marie takes school very, very seriously. She wants to do well andshe works hard. She had also just gotten over a very bad cold and had missedsome school because of that and because of other events. So she had a lot of catchup work in addition to several projects that were due in a number of subjects. Toadd to her stress, for a couple of the projects, she was teamed up with other studentswith whom she was to complete the projects jointly. Well, as is often the case, thestudents that she was paired with disappointed her and did not do their share ofthe work. So instead of just doing just what she was supposed to do, she wantedto ensure the projects were complete, so she did both entire projects herself.

Do you remember when your children were disappointed? Didn’t youfeel with them? Didn’t you share their disappointment, frustration and stress whenthey confided in you and you realized there was not much you could do for thembut listen? Well, I remember, and those memories came back to me that week. They came back because of a bond that you form with a girl from another country, away from home and her real parents for the first time in her life, who depends onyou to take their place, if only temporarily.

But the week went on, the projects got completed, the schoolwork wascaught up and the stress subsided, just like we knew it would. Then, Marie got toattend the Rotary all-club meeting. Unfortunately, I could not attend, but it waspure joy to see her when she got home. She was beaming, just like a 17 year-oldshould from time to time when she has had the opportunity to experience newthings and feel new emotions. At the all-club meeting, the students performed thefamous RYE Flag Ceremony. The flag ceremony is probably one of the mostimpressive and inspirational events the students participate in. The students areintroduced one by one and they march in carrying their country’s flag. I knewMarie would take pride in that ceremony even before she did. But when shedescribed it later, she was literally beaming with pride. You see, in many countries, the flag is not as important as it is here. The people do not live national pride likewe do. Both of the exchange students I have hosted were amazed by the fact thatyou see American (and Texas) flags everywhere you go. They just do not do thatover there. There are no high school or college sports, rivalries or mascots inGermany. There are no t-shirts, blankets, pens, sweaters, etc., etc., etc. emblazonedwith school symbols and colors like we have here. And there are no nationaldisplays of pride like we have here. So as she confided, carrying that flag as arepresentative of her country was one of the most special things she has done here

or anywhere. It let everyone know that she was a German citizen. Then, to topthings off, she got her picture taken with the President of Rotary International.Wow, what an honor and thrill for her. Would it have been the same for you or me?…Probably not, but it certainly was for her and it showed. And we, as her hostparents, shared her joy, and pride and excitement. What a wonderful experienceit was for us.

Then on Saturday, I had to get Marie to school at 6:50 so she could gowith her soccer team to a tournament in Dickinson. Marie was on the BellaireHigh School JV soccer team and the tournament was to last all day. Well, wereally wanted to go to the ranch that day, since we had not been in a couple ofweeks, but as all parents know, sometimes you can’t necessarily do exactly whatyou want to do when you have children with needs of their own. But Marie hadsaid that if we wanted to go to the ranch afterwards, she would not mind, eventhough it was going to be a long day. I told her we would see how the day shapedout. They were scheduled to play at least three games, and only if they won allthree, would they play a fourth. Marie had assured us that they probably wouldnot win all three. We chose not to go watch until afternoon, so we were kind ofwaiting to see how the morning went. She texted us after the second game thatthey had won both and the team they were playing third had not won any gamesall year. So, you guessed it, it was going to be a four-game day. So we went for thethird game and they won 6-0, and we found ourselves not really caring about theranch anymore, but instead, we became wrapped up in the excitement of cheeringMarie’s team to victory. They then played Clements, who was believed to havethe stronger team, in the championship game, and yes, Bellaire won. It was acold, windy and very long day, but they had so much fun. And because of that, wedid as well.

So we didn’t get headed home until about 7:30. I said we’ll just gohome and not worry about the ranch. But Marie insisted we go, not because shewanted to terribly, but because she knew I wanted to. So we went and got thereabout 10pm. We got the fire going in the fireplace and the house warmed up, andfixed hot chocolate (and something a bit stronger for the adults) and had a veryrelaxing evening after a very enjoyable day.

Then, on Sunday, after doing the things I wanted to do around theranch, we left in time to drive to Humble for the Host Family Appreciation Dinner.During that evening’s events, it dawned on me exactly why I volunteered to be ahost family for the second time in three years. Not only did the students performthe flag ceremony for us, but there were testimonials by the students about what itmeant for them to have this opportunity to go away from home at a very youngage and experience family life in another country…not just life in another country, but family life. And that is what the program is about. And that is why it is soimportant. Then each student was asked to introduce their host families. Our cluband our student’s host families were well represented, and you could tell thatMarie was proud of that. She introduced her first host family, Joe and MeredithWysik, who are non-Rotarians, but carried forth the principles of Rotary by theiractions. You could tell that Marie had formed a special bond with the Wysiks inthe three months she spent with them. She then introduced Pat and I and talkedabout the “huge” ranch we had and how she enjoyed her stay with us. (I later had

to tell her that by Texas standards, ourranch was actually pretty tiny.) Thenshe recognized Ed and AgataBurdsinski and their two daughters, who she is living with now, and will befor the remainder of the school year. Shealso made it a point to recognize thecounselor and Youth Exchange Officerfrom our club, and she emphasized howsupportive they and our club had been.Marie is very proud of the BellaireSouthwest Houston Rotary Club.

Each student there wentthrough the same exercise and it wasas gratifying to hear them speak of theirhost families as it was when Mariethanked us. It was gratifying because Iknew Pat and I, as well as Meredith andJoe and Ed and Agata, were doingsomething special and somethingimportant in helping these kids tounderstand the world a bit better. Andthe common feeling I heard expressedover and over from those kids was love. And I believe it was sincere andunrequited love that they were talkingabout, not just toward the host families, but toward the program, and Rotary andeven our country. And I could tell thatlove and pride was returned many timesover by the host families in attendance.

So that ended the week. Asyou can see, it was not an extraordinaryweek filled with any remarkableadventure. Rather, it was a rather

ordinary week with an ordinaryAmerican family. But isn’t that reallywhat RYE is all about? Maybe that iswhy, to me, it was a very special week.It was one that I will not soon forget.

I write this in hopes thatsome of it may be used in a program orjust word of mouth to make ourmembers (and potential non-memberhost families such as the Wysiks)understand that, by hosting, they aredoing something very important andvery special, and have the potential toshape and even change lives. Now, Iknow that not all host family

experiences are always good. But I alsoknow that not all experiences raising myown teenagers were good. But youknow what? I wouldn’t have traded anyof those experiences, good or bad, foranything. Through the RYE program, Iknow I have done what a Rotarian issupposed to be doing and I know I havegained something from that. My wife,Pat and I want to thank Rotary for thatexperience and the opportunity to makea difference.

Southwest Houston Rotary gifted its namesake city with an elegant newlandmark: a fifteen-and-a-half foot clock tower that now graces the centralintersection of Bellaire Boulevard and S. District 5890 The Rotary Foundation Update

April 1, 2012 Report

Dear District 5890 Rotarians,In a Surprise Move – thought to be due to depression on hearing that “her year” is ¾ done, DG Rhonda Walls Kerby has asked DGE Chris Schneider and DGN Bob Gebhard

to postpone their years, so she can be District Governor for two more years! Aprils FoolsA pecial – Recognition Point Match – is available for all recurring contributions to the Annual Programs Fund through Rotary Direct (formerly called TRF

Direct) from April 1, 2012 to July 1, 2012. See all the details at the bottom of this report.Big Do’ins - I hope all of you are now aware of the amazing recent Polio Plus Milestones. India has been removed from the Polio Endemic Country list with no Polio cases

registered for over one year. And we passed the $200 Mil mark in giving to the Polio Challenge. Three Polio Endemic Countries remain: Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Nigeria (PAN). Only36 Polio cases have been reported worldwide this year. We really are “This Close”! But we are not done yet. Our goal is 100% worldwide Polio Eradication and we must continue to fundPolioPlus until the job is finished.

We also now have over 350 Polio Plus Society members (who donate $100+ to TRF for Polio Plus each year). Please email Polio Plus Society Chair Charles [email protected] to receive your pin when you are ready to join.

Congratulations! Our D5890 clubs and members have contributed over ¾ of a $ Million ($753,594) since the 12/01/07 start of the Polio Challenge. The New 2011-12 Rotary Year is over 3/4 in the bag with DG Rhonda at the helm. Magazine Month

Well this month is Magazine Month in Rotary International! Now Iknow what you are thinking, how can a beagle get excited about MagazineMonth? Well I look at it like this way, if it was not for me reading a copy ofmy Mommy’s Rotarian magazine, I would not of all the great work thatRotarians are doing all around the world (remember my parents will not getme my own I Pad). Unfortunately, when I read the Rotarian magazine thereare not enough stories in it about my friends and the hard work they do tomake the world a better place. So do not forget to submit your stories to notonly the Rotarian magazine, but for my Mommy’s newsletter. Also, Iwanted to remind all of my Rotary friends that have pets that the MarriotHorseshoe Bay, the site of this year’s District Conference, is pet friendly. Sobring along your four legged friends, because I have heard a rumor that therewill be a Blue Bell ice cream social on Saturday and I love Blue Bell…..Ihave been known to sneak in the house, get the ice cream scoop out of thedrawer, get out a bowl and have a few scoops when my parents are not looking.Shhhh….. No one tell them, they both think the missing ice cream is theother one’s fault because I do not have an opposable thumb….. Our littlesecret…….Love,

Snapper the Wonder Beagle
