Though a fight to pull away, it is irresistible in finding new ways to latch on to each other even when trying to detach. Inspired by the events surrounding the “Central Park 5”, this piece aims to uncover the structure of a community and socio-political system that failed to protect the lives of five innocent young boys living in Harlem in 1989. “You can forgive, but you won’t forget. “Enemy Behind the Gate” is a work that was inspired by enemies that live within our midst. THEY LOOK LIKE YOU…THEY ACT LIKE YOU…THEY LIVE LIKE YOU BUT, THEY ARE NOT ONE OF YOU. The Gate is not invincible but it’s yours to secure. Set to the burning music of Steve Reich and danced by the explosive energy of PHILADANCO.

student at The Ailey School. Huggins appeared as a guest artist for several dance companies in the United States and abroad. As a master teacher and choreographer, he works in Europe, Japan, Korea, and throughout the United States. He has taught countless master classes and workshops at several universities and dance institutions including Howard University in Washington, D.C., Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, jest to name a few. Huggins, a much sought after choreographer, has created ballets for numerous companies, including Dallas Black Dance Theatre, Ailey II, Philadanco, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance, Broadway Dance Center of Tokyo, Oslo Dance Ensemble in Oslo, Norway. He is a 2002 and 2008 recipient of the Ira Aldridge Award for Best Choreography from the Black Theatre Alliance in Chicago for his work Enemy Behind the Gates and Pyrokinesis. He also worked on several projects for Disney in Orlando, Florida. Huggins is a silver medalist from the Seoul International Contemporary Dance Competition, resident choreographer at Duke Ellington High School for the Arts in Washington, D.C., and will serve as Artist-in-Residence for The Ailey School in 2009. Most recently, he was the choreographer for the 50th Anniversary Opening Night Gala for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Huggins is currently a faculty member at The Ailey School.

Joan Myers Brown, DFA, DHL (Founder, Executive Artistic Director) Ms. Brown is the founder of the Philadelphia Dance Company (PHILADANCO) and The Philadelphia School of Dance Arts. She serves as honorary chairperson for the International Association of Blacks in Dance, an organization she established in 1991. She is also founder of the International Conference of Black Dance Companies in 1988. She is a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of the Arts, which bestowed upon her an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts, and is a member of the dance faculty at Howard University in Washington, DC. She was also awarded an honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters by Ursinus College. Listed in Who’s Who in America and described as an “innovator and communicator,” Ms. Brown has made significant contributions to the national and international arts communities. She remains a tireless advocate and spokesperson and is a model of tenacity, hope and discipline. Ms. Brown is the proud mother of three daughters Marlisa, Dannielle and Megan, and grandmother of six. It must be emphasized that Joan Myers Brown’s efforts for dance excellence are only part of her contribution to society and Philadelphia in particular. She speaks out, talks back and shows up. She was co-chair of Dance/USA Philadelphia. She has received the prestigious Philadelphia Award and November 7, 2010 was declared Joan Myers Brown Living Legacy Day. Her memoirs were documented in a recent publication “Joan Myers Brown and the Audacious Hope of the Black Ballerina”, by author Brenda Dixon Gottschild and she has received awards from the City of Philadelphia, the State of Pennsylvania and the Embassy of the United States of America. Brown was designated in 2013 as one of the Top 10 Philadelphians honored as a Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania and Outstanding Alumni of West Philadelphia High School. July 2013 Joan Myers Brown received the prestigious National Medal of Arts Award presented by President Barak Obama. Most recently she was honored by Tuskegee University and given The XIX Visionary Award and the American Dance Guild Honoree Award. In May she received an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania.

THE CHOREOGRAPHERS

THANG DAO (Bewildered) Born in Danang, Vietnam. He currently resides in New York City as a dancer and choreographer. Thang received his formal dance education from the Juilliard School and the Boston Conservatory. Thang holds a BFA in dance from The Boston Conservatory and an MA from New York University. He danced for the Stephen Petronio Company from 2001-2006, leaving to focus on his choreographic career. He has also worked for the Metropolitan Opera and Little Orchestra Society. Thang has presented his works in Boston, New York City, and Austin, with acclaimed reviews by THE BOSTON GLOBE, AUSTIN 360 and THE NEW YORK TIMES. In 2006, his ballet STEPPING GROUND, choreographed on Ballet Austin for the 1st Biennial NEW AMERICAN TALENT/DANCE, received the Audience Choice Award on all four nights. Thang is also the recipient of the 2008 Princess Grace Choreography Fellowship.

ABDEL SALAAM (There was….There is a Time) Executive Artistic Director of ‘Forces of Nature’. After several years of artistic and spiritual service, Mr. Salaam was offered a commission in 1988 by the Very Reverend James Parks Morton, Dean of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, to help create the first African Episcopal Mass for the Church using African dance and music as a liturgical voice.This evolved into his work and company in their Annual St. Francis Day and Paul Winter’s Winter Solstice Celebrations, which continue to this day.During the 80’s, Mr. Salaam served as a delegate for the Artists for Ecology’s International Summit at the Sundance Institute in Utah; the Conference on Third World Arts and European Theater in Oxford, England; and the 12th Annual Festival for Peace

in Moscow, Russia. He and his company also led the historic procession for Nelson and Winnie Mandela on their visit to New York in 1990. Years later, in 1997, he served as a cultural delegate to the Dance Umbrella/Dance Alive Festival in Johannesburg, South Africa through the Brooklyn Academy of Music. He also served as the Artistic Director for Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Annual Gospel Festival for four years.Mr. Salaam and his company were funded through the New England Foundation for the Arts/ National Dance Project to develop “Rhythm Legacy: The Living Books” which premiered in 2001 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Harvey Theater. The project was then awarded additional funding to tour the United States during its 2002-2003 season.

RONALD K. BROWN (Think) Brown founded Evidence, A Dance Company in1985. He has worked with Mary Anthony Dance Theater, Jennifer Muller/The Works and other choreographers and artists. Brown has set works on Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Ailey II, Cleo Parker Robinson Ensemble, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, Jennifer Muller/The Works, Jeune Ballet d’Afrique Noire, Ko-Thi Dance Company, Philadanco, Muntu Dance Theater of Chicago and Ballet Hispanico. He has collaborated with such artists as composer/designer Omotayo Wunmi Olaiya, the late writer Craig G. Harris, director Ernie McClintock’s Jazz Actors Theater, choreographers Patricia Hoffbauer and Rokiya Kone, and composers Robert Een, Oliver Lake, Bernadette Speech, David Simons, and Don Meissner. He choreographed Regina Taylor’s award-winning play, Crowns and won an AUDELCO Award for his work on that production. Brown has won a Fred & Adele Astaire Award for Outstanding Choreography in the Tony winning The Gershwin's Porgy & Bess, adapted by Suzan Lori Parks, arrangement by Diedre Murray & directed by Diane Paulus. In addition Brown was named Def Dance Jam Workshop Mentor of the Year in 2000 and has received; John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship, National Endowment for the Arts Choreographers Fellowship, New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship, United States Artists Fellowship, and The Ailey Apex Award for teaching. Brown is a member of Stage Directors & Choreographers Society.

DAWN MARIE BAZEMORE (A Movement for Five) Dawn Marie Bazemore was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. She received her early professional training from the Fournier–Grego Performing Arts Center and Covenant Ballet Theater of Brooklyn. Dawn Marie was also awarded scholarships to train at Ballet Academy East, Dance Theater of Harlem, Alvin Ailey American Dance Center and the Joffrey Ballet School. After graduating from the New York City High School for Performing Arts, Dawn Marie went on to earn a BFA in Dance from the State University of New York at Purchase and in 2014 earned her MFA in dance from Hollins University. She was also a finalist in the 1994 Arts Recognition and Talent Search and a recipient of the Helen Tamiris Award for Excellence in Dance. In 1998, Dawn Marie joined the Philadelphia Dance Company (Philadanco) were she served as a principal dancer for 10 years. She has also performed with Fred Benjamin Dance Company, Deeply Rooted Productions and Dances Patrelle. Dawn Marie’s musical theater credits include Regional: Dreamgirls (Lorrell), Purlie, Aint Misbehavin’, All Shook Up (Sylvia) and Broadway: the First National Tour of The Color Purple. Currently, Dawn Marie is serving as a faculty member at Berks Ballet Theatre Conservatory of Dance and Wayne Ballet & Center for Dance Arts teaching all levels of ballet & modern dance. Most recently, she has been awarded. Most recently Dawn Marie served as the fall artist-in-residence at Virginia Commonwealth University.
