  • Its not easy to watch your loved ones suffer. So after Dr. Josh Norine, D.C. at Total

Healthcare witnessed his own grand-mother, Betty Jean, battle crippling knee pain for months on end, he decided he never wanted any of his patients have to go through the same experience.

Betty Jean was an active senior who had enjoyed deep sea fishing and moose hunting before she decided to have total knee replacement surgery at age 81.

But she couldnt have imagined the awful pain shed have to endure for months after it was over. My grand-mother is an incredibly strong lady, but the pain she was experiencing after the surgery was so intense, she cried, Dr. Josh says.

Dr. Josh notes that for some people, like his grandmother, the pain of rehabili-tation after knee replacement surgery can be much worse than the pain theyd expe-rienced prior to going under the knife. Thats why he decided to begin offering a new nonsurgical treatment program at Total Healthcare in Roseville for patients whod like an alternative to total knee replacement.

Over time, the natural fluid that cushions the knee joints can break down, resulting in horrible, bone-on-bone pain and stiffness, Dr. Josh explains. The safe, FDA-approved treatment offered at Total Healthcare involves a series of natural injections to restore that fluid.

The injections, taken from rooster combs, have proven effective in reducing knee pain. Surgery isnt the only option, but most people think it is, Dr. Josh explains.

Some people might have already tried this treatment with little or no results, but Dr. Josh says patients at Total Healthcare can be nearly guaranteed pain relief, for two reasons.

First, the staff at Total Healthcare offers in-house physical therapy designed to help patients heal fast.

Second, Total Healthcare doctors use special equipment that allows them to see inside the knee so they can ensure the shot is injected into exactly the right place.

The treatment program takes only one or two months, and theres no downtime required. Pain relief can last for months after treatment, sometimes even years, Dr. Josh says, and Medicare and most insurance companies often cover a large percentage of the cost.

Dr. Josh says he never wants to see his patients suffer like his grandmother did, and invites those who suffer from knee pain and stiffness to call Total Healthcare to see how they might benefit from this innovative treatment. Many Total Healthcare patients who undergo this treatment report being able to dance with a spouse once again or finally play with their grandchildren for the first time in years, Dr. Josh adds.

    They can live again.

Here is what actual patients have to say about their successful treatment for knee pain at Total Healthcare:

My left knee was so painful that I had trouble bending the knee to sit down or even to find a comfortable sleeping posi-tion. I was limping badly when I walked, and found it

impossible to climb stairs. The shots made all the difference in the world, making it possible to sit, stand, walk, climb stairs and sleep comfortably. Thank you so much for suggesting this treatment. I had no idea such a thing was possible.

    Linda

I have been able to do more work around the house in the past few weeks than I have been all summer. My stamina has gone through the roof and

I have been able to stand for longer periods of time without pain. As far as Im concerned, this was a total suc-cess for me!

Dedication, effort and tradition could well be the themes of this years Rose Parade; theyre definitely the driving forces behind both the group and indi-vidual grand marshals.

The 2013 Rose Parade will honor longtime volunteer Ken Hansen and the Roseville Area High School Gymnastics Team.

A legacy to take pride inThis is, I think, their third time as

grand marshals because of their many accomplishments throughout the years at state championships, parade organiz-er Leslie Berry notes. Were honored to have this years state champion gymnasts as grand marshals -- theyre well-deserv-ing of encouragement and praise from the community.

The RAHS gymnasts claimed the 2013 Class AA championship in an event-by-event, moment-by-moment struggle in which they outperformed perennial foe Northfield by just 0.375

points. It was the Raiders second state

championship in a row and the sixth in the past 8 years. (In 2010 and 11,

Northfield took the championship.)Though Roseville only won one

event -- the uneven bars -- in the multi-school championship, the gymnasts proved they were truly team players, each submitting a strong enough per-formance to edge out other teams when counted as a whole.

Review sports writer Brian Meyers explained: In each event, each team has five gymnasts compete and the top four scores are added up to get the team score. On the uneven bars, the Raiders scored no lower than 9.45. Isis Muller led the way with a 9.7, the teams high-est individual score of the night. Emily VanKrevelen was next at 9.675 and was followed by Kaylee Streckers at 9.6 and Carly Wagners 9.45.

The vault was Rosevilles second-best event as the team posted a score of 37.45. Muller posted the teams best score with a 9.45, VanKrevelen and Wagner had identical 9.4s and Jessica Strecker scored a 9.2.

Hansen, gymnasts named parade grand marshals

Ken and Lorraine Hansen (pictured), and their daughter Diane Lang, have played a key role for many years in making sure the Rosefest parade is a wonderful event.

Roseville scored a 37.3 on the floor exercise with VanKrevelen posting the teams highest individual score of 9.675. Kaylee Strecker added a 9.5, Muller had a 9.375 and Jessica Strecker scored an 8.750.

Rosevilles lowest event score of 36.525 came on its first event of the night, the balance beam. Mullers 9.4 was the Raiders best beam score but their lowest high individual event score of the night. Jessica Strecker added a 9.225, Wagner had a 9.05 and Kayla Soplata had an 8.85.

Several of the Raiders also got the chance to shine in individual competi-tion at State.

Wagner won the individual uneven bars state championship, with a 9.8.

Muller ranked second statewide in the all-around, with a score of 37.95.

Jessica Strecker medaled by placing sixth on the balance beam with a score of 9.4.

Wagner posted Rosevilles highest finish on the vault by placing 10th and Muller had Rosevilles best floor exercise finish, 12th.

Just wanted to give back to community

Without the work of Ken and Lorraine Hansen and their daughter Diane Lang, there might be Rosefest parades, but there certainly wouldnt have been such a successful, seamless 20-plus-year run.

Thats why Ken Hansen, 88, is grand marshal of the parade, organizer Leslie Berry explains.

He has been part of the backbone of the Rose Parade committee almost since the inception, she says. As hes step-ping down from such active fundraising, it was a unanimous decision to honor him this year.

In the early 1990s the Rose Parade was just getting off the ground, and needed all the financial help it could get to grow and continue.

The community effort sounded great to the Hansens, whod just retired and wanted to spend their newfound time to give back. Both hail from the Gladstone area of Maplewood and remember the

civic pride that bound that community together.

So, Ken threw himself into fund-raising for the parade and rounding up grand prizes for the button contest. He found it most effective to research local stores and businesses and drop in on their leaders for face-to-face encounters; that made it more difficult for them to say no. Plus, my career had been in sales, he adds with a chuckle.

Some years, he singlehandedly brought in as much as $20,000.

Ken was out pounding the pavement for days at a time, Berry recalls. Hes also helped with buttons. Hes just been everything to the parade.

Kens wife, Lorraine, who Berry says is the Rose parade historian, remem-bers that in only two years -- this will be its 23rd appearance -- the parade was rained out.

A darker time, Lorraine says, was the year after the recession hit. Our city manager announced they were going to cut the parade....We said No way.

Thanks to Kens fundraising and over-and-above efforts from Rosefest fans, the show went on. Everyone came out and we got the money together somehow.

Lorraine and daughter Diane Lang will have to wave to Ken from the side-lines; theyre going to be busy with their own Rose Parade duties.

Diane is in charge of parade par-ticipation and Lorraine organizes the marching bands, as shes done since 1992.

I just love music and I love bands, and they only had about four or five marching bands the first and second year of the parade, Lorraine notes. I thought, This is one way to get these high schools involved, and I just got busy and invited a whole bunch.

As a former drum and bugle corps mom, Lorraine knows the arrangements and organization the bands need.

The music fan sometimes outdoes herself, though.

A few years ago, I kinda went overboard and had 17 of them! she exclaims. At that point, it gets difficult to find enough floats and Scout groups to separate one bands trumpets and bass drums from anothers, she admits.

This years parade will draw bands from as far away as Waconia and

  • Devoting himself to the rare coin and precious metal trade for well over three decades, Westerlings commitment to the customer is second to none. From their Roseville office, he and his associates offer purchases and appraisals for estates, banks, insur-ance companies and individuals.

My staff and I are dedicated to helping people preserve and grow their wealth, Westerling explains. Thats why The Truman Company offers personalized ser-vice tailored to each individual.

Introduced to the business by his Uncle Truman, a young Roger became enamored with coins. This nearly-lifelong passion encour-aged Westerling to open his own business under the Truman name.

Every time he visited my fam-ily, he gave me a coin that had an interesting history. His hope was that I would develop a real inter-est in rare and unusual coins, and it worked, Westerling says with a smile.

Westerling visited Minnesota to appraise a collection in 1998, and was so touched by the welcome he received he decided to move both his home and business to St. Paul. He currently works with about 3,000 clients around the country.

Westerling is a life member of the American Numismatic Association and holds an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.

His knowledge can reassure people that theyre insuring or pricing such items correctly. Im more than happy to visit a home or bank to review a collection, Westerling notes. Theres a mar-

ket for everything!Though old coins appreci-

ate gradually, precious metals have undergone dramatic spikes over the past decade in value, Westerling adds. From 2002 to 2013, the value of silver went up by 668 percent and gold by 595 percent. Many of Westerlings customers are currently trans-ferring individual retirement account funds from banks to a precious metal IRA.

I honestly think the prices for gold and silver will con-tinue to rise throughout our lifetime, while the U.S. dollar declines, Westerling explains. Transferring to a precious metal IRA can be an excellent invest-ment.

Customers will feel at home in The Truman Company office, where they might even meet

Westerlings pooch, Sonny, and his wife, Donna, a Twin Cities artist whose work is featured throughout the office.

    Curious about the worth of

a personal collection? Roger Westerling and his staff at The Truman Company are ready to help.

The Truman Company: a valuable source for coins and precious metalsT rust and confidence are key in the coin indus-try, and customers

from all over Minnesota and the U.S. have found an extraordinary guide in Roger Westerling of The Truman Company.

Garrett Gustafson entered the Rosefest Button Design Contest while enrolled in a graphic design course at Roseville Area High School this spring. The recent RAHS gradu-ate says he has been playing around with graphics since middle school.I was pretty surprised that I won, but I

had a lot of experience working with the programs, more than a lot of the students, he says.Gustafson says he likes working with

Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator and also enjoys photography and woodworking when he has the time.Rosevilles high school students have been

entering the competition for the past five years. This year there were 28 submitted entries from students enrolled in three dif-ferent graphic design classes offered at the school. RAHS Careers and Technology teacher

Peggy Finnegan has headed up the button design at the school for the last five years,

explaining to students what the festival is looking for as far as identity and themes and then turning the students loose on designs.Finnegan, who was Gustafsons graphic

design teacher this past year, says the stu-dents up their game for the competition and they enjoy the rivalry between one another.Once the kids get started they really put

themselves into it, Finnegan says. Theres a competitive nature to the project that they enjoy and a sense of pride when they fin-ish.She says she was not surprised that Gus-

tafson took the top prize. Hes very talented in graphic design

and has good programming skills. He has a technical mind and a knack for coming up with good ideas. I know hell do well in the future.Leslie Berry, longtime Rosefest parade

    coordinator, also praises Gustafsons design,

  • Litchfield -- Litchfield has been a regu-lar since the early years. Nearer to home are Champlin Park and St. Anthonys entries.

Park Center is new this year, and theyre quite a competitive band. Its just like football or basketball to these kids -- theyre intent on being the best, Lorraine says.

After the bands line up, shell be sit-ting in the judges booth with judge Tom Haugen, former band director at Kellogg High School, who travels from Decorah, Iowa each year to judge the bands and hand out prizes.

Thanks to Kens work fundraising -- the parade helps pay travel expenses for the bands -- and Lorraines talent for organization, the Rose Parade has become a favorite among high school bands.

Lorraine notes the Minnesota Brass drum and bugle corps, an all-ages group that won the national competition in 2011 will also be in the parade.

At 85, Lorraine is still fired up about marching bands.

I just love music and I love the kids. Were lucky enough to have our local VFW feed all these kids after the parade, and theyve been so impressed. The kids are polite, theyre friendly and theyre just great citizens. One year the VFW had men who were going to volunteer to clean the grounds afterward, and they couldnt find one napkin to pick up.

Berry notes that the Hansens could use some help from a younger generation of volunteers. To keep Rosefest vibrant, we need that younger generation to step up, she says. The time to get involved is now, not later.

Lorraine predicts that the music, the kids and the fun will hook others just as they did her. Though she works from 8 a.m. to nearly midnight on the day of the parade, she keeps signing on for more.

I keep on saying every year Thisll be my last year, but then the night after its all over with, Diane says, You know, Ma, its been so much fun -- you think we should do it next year again?

People are excited for Summer, and we have lots of Summer things in new paints, tools, lawn mowers, trimmers, sprinkler, hoses and other lawn-care prod-ucts, says store owner Mike Johnson. This year we have hanging baskets and pots of colorful, assorted flowers as well.

Roseville Suburban Ace, a popular local hardware store on the corner of Lexington and Roselawn avenues, is known for its helpful, friendly service.

The store is also widely-known for car-rying top-name brands, and has recently added to that lineup with Craftsman tools, Clark and Kensington paints and Scotts new Snap lawn care system.

Aces affiliation with Craftsman means customers can find a full line of Craftsman wrenches, hand tools, air tools, shop vacs and other power equipment, with more available by special order, says assistant manager Dave Floberg.

The new Clark and Kensington paint is darn good stuff, adds Floberg, who explains all the paints in the store are made by Ace and score well in Consumer Reports. With the primer in the paint, Clark and Kensington can save customers elbow grease and time.

Scotts new Snap system promises the greatest change for homeowners, tak-ing the guesswork out of lawn care and the mess off their hands. With the Snap system, lawn care products like fertilizer, weed killer or crabgrass preventer are packaged so they just clip into the Snap lawn spreader. Theres no measuring, pouring or handling chemicals.

With cutting-edge products and years of expertise on staff, the Suburban Ace crew sees customers coming in from all over the area, Floberg says. Employee Troy Williams adds, People would rather come here than the big-box stores because we know what were talking about, weve got what you need and we greet you the minute you walk in the door.

Its easier to go to Ace than any place else, and I like their courteous ser-vice, he says.

Women are a growing part of the

stores customer base, as they gain con-fidence in their do-it-yourself abilities. Williams says plumbing seems to be a project more women are willing to tackle, noting a widow who decided she could complete a repair herself after store staff showed her what she needed and walked her through the process.

She was happy to get the job done herself, Williams recalls. We can often

help people fix something on their own. Theyre saving money and adding skills.

Those turning more of their thoughts to taking care of outdoor lawns, planting flow-ers or maybe adding to their outdoor decor always find a helping hand at Ace.

With the hazy lazy days of summer almost upon us, were well stocked with grills, lawnmowers and garden supplies, Floberg says.

Outdoor living furniture can now be ordered from the Ace warehouse through the stores colorful catalog, and benches for the yard are in the store. The new Toro and Craftsman lawnmowers are in so come by and check them out.

Johnson suggests that people who need lawnmowers repaired should bring them in now, before the summer rush starts.

He adds that once new folks stop in, they usually become regulars.

We appreciate our customers and strive to provide superior customer ser-vice, Johnson adds. We pride ourselves on answering their questions and helping them get going on their projects. And we want this to be a fun and friendly place to shop as well.

  • Rain or shine, the Harriet Alexander Nature Center in Roseville will be hop-ping with activity Saturday, June 22, as kids and adults enjoy Rosefests annual group campfire and the Great Ameri-can Backyard Campout. You dont have to have be an expert

at roasting marshmallows over an open fire or pitching a tent to join in the fun. Nature Center naturalist Debbie Cash

says people of all ages and levels of expertise will take part in the campfire event and the tent camping under the stars. If thunderstorms pass through the area that evening, everyone will migrate indoors and make smores - the traditional campfire treat - in the nature centers kitchen microwave. And the group thats camping will set up the tents inside the nature center for an indoor sleepover.

Campfire and cookoutFolks will be bringing their lawn

chairs and gathering around the camp-fire ring for storytelling, songs, smores and lawn games at the Nature Center beginning at 7 p.m. Area resident Margaret Cummings

says she always marks the campfire date on her calendar. I think its my favorite event during the year in all of Roseville. Its an amazing, multi-generational

event, and you dont have to have chil-dren to do it.Up to 50 people at a time will sit

around the fire and sing favorite folk songs such as This Land Is Your Land and Frog Went A-Courtin,

while they toast marshmallows. Its just absolutely fun, Cummings says. Often theres a storyteller to enthrall the group and kids play old-fashioned, outdoor games.

Cummings says, Ive seen a wide range of people there; its inclusive, easy-going and a come-as-you-are event. Whats not to like?, she adds. And

    its free!

    Great American Backyard Campout

Registered campers will arrive at the Nature Center at 5 p.m. June 22 to begin pitching their tents on the lawn of Central Park Elementary School. Since the Nature Center doesnt have any flat land, the tents are set up on the adjacent, grassy schoolyard. The Great American Backyard Cam-

pout is sponsored by the Roseville REI store, and participants can either use their own tents or REI provides tents

and sleeping pads free of charge for those folks who dont have camping equipment.Families can pay $12 for a campsite

and that includes some setup help with the REI staff. The tent campers get to take advan-

tage of the group campfire, and then at 9:30 p.m. have a choice of an open-air movie or a night hike. In the morning, the campers are

served a continental breakfast, break camp and head home by 9 a.m.Cash characterizes it as a practice

campout in a safe, controlled environ-ment for people who havent camped before or havent camped for a long time. Its also a chance for families to intro-

duce small children to the joys of camp-ing. Should something go wrong, the Nature Center staff is there to help out the entire time. Some families come year after year

stars in a tent.If it rains, we camp, with or without

tents, in the Nature Center facility. Its hilarious to see the free-standing tents all set up inside the building, Cash says with a chuckle. Its kind of cute, too, and the tents

give people some private space, and

they still get the experience of sleeping in a tent. While the campout does take place

in a controlled environment, Cash laughs as she says theres no way to pre-dict what might happen out in nature. Although the campout hasnt been

visited by any of the wild critters com-monly known as campsite robbers, Cash says, theyve seen raccoons nearby but none have ventured into the camp-ing area. She speculates the raccoons just didnt know what to make of the startling sight of tents on the school grounds and scampered away. And since the campers didnt have food in the tent area, she says there werent any choice morsels for the animals to sneak off with for a midnight snack.Cash says she recently attended a

community-ed class and the instruc-tor came up to her and explained that her family has attended the campout since the beginning six years ago, and is already looking forward to coming again this year.To join in the outdoor camping fun,

register for the Great American Back-yard Campout by calling the Harriet Alexander Nature Center at 651-792-7012.
