Final Global Lens Dec 5thTHE PARADE7pm Fort Worden School House

It is with deep gratitude we announce the end of The Global Film Initiativepartnership that has allowed 8 yrs of world class film from around the world tobe screened by PTFF. We are currently searching for a replacement for thisdynamic community conversation with film. Stay tuned for details.

The final film in this Global Lens series is THE PARADE. Surprisingly, Parada(The Parade), written and directed by Srđan Dragojević, isn't a solemn arthouselecture; it's a cheeky, crowdpleasing comedy about a former Serbian para whogets a job providing security at Pride. It begins with a glossary of the slang Ð"Chetnik", "Balija", "Shiptar" Ð by which the various factions in the Yugoslavianwar fondly referred to one another, before ending with the one "used byeveryone": "peder" ("faggot"). That sort of worldly cynicism is how Dragojevićgoads Serbian audiences into his comedy's embrace; his lead character, Limun,has to head out on the road to corral former sparring partners from the war Ða Croat, a Bosnian and Kosovan Albanian Ð into his Seven Samurai-stylebodyguard squad. This film was the top box office gross in Serbia for 2011!

The film is subtitled, but this trailer is not and it is still hilarious.

PTFI, Peninsula College and Goddard College are partnering to make thescreening of this film possible. Audience is welcome to attend, free of charge,and participate in a post-film discussion on December 5th, 7 pm at the FortWorden Schoolhouse. Parking permits are available for the event.

PTFI invites you to take a 90minute trip to Kazakhstan in thisbroodingly contemporaryadaptation of DostoyevskyÕsCrime and Punishment. STUDENTportrays a solitary philosophystudent who steers hisdirectionless life toward thecommission of a violent crime,spurred on by postmodernmusings and a post-Soviet ordercharacterized by growing inequality, institutional corruption and a ruthlessethic of Òeat or be eatenÓ. Director Darezhan Omirbayev, whose awardsinclude the Cannes Film Festival, takes the literary classic into a uniquedirection by rooting his nameless student in the losing segment ofKazakhstanÕs new capitalist era.

The Global Lens Film Series promotes cross cultural understanding throughcinema and is brought to the LibraryÕs Learning Center (1220 LawrenceStreet) free of charge, thanks to a partnership between the PT Film Institute,Goddard College, Peninsula College and the PT Public Library. Featuring a remarkable cast built aroundForest Whittaker, THE BUTLER, is Òlooselybased on the real-life events of White Housebutler Eugene Allen, who served under eightpresidents. According to interviews, whilesubstantial "dramatic license" was taken withAllen's personal life, everything depictedwithin the White House actually happened.The irony is that the White House scenes areamong the least effective. The movie shineswhen it focuses on the fractious relationship

between Cecil and Louis, whose divergentperspectives on the role of the black man inAmerica provides the point of friction. ForCecil, who grew up as a servant, the way to

advance in life is to be hardworking and non-confrontational. For Louis, itmeans forcing the issue and taking a stand. We have two new indoor venuesthis year, joining The American

Legion (Peter Simpson FreeCinema) The Uptown Theatre, The

Rose and The Rosebud Cinema! Weare pleased to welcome The Key

City Public Theatre and TheSilverwater Theatre to our film

venues. That brings us to a total of6 indoor venues. The Key City

Public Theatre will be renamedÒThe James Broughton TheatreÓ, honoring the poet and filmmaker who called

Port Townsend his home for many years. The Broughton with 70 seats willopen Friday morning at 9am all the way thru the festival to Sunday night,

screening the Jury Award Best Documentary. Beverage service will benefit KeyCity Public Theatre programming and we are delighted to welcome this

From script to screenÉjoin a fun group of women in creating a short film thatwill be submitted to the 2013 Port Townsend Film Festival. Screenplay writerand author Nancy Alvarez will lead the scripting phase. Jane Champion ofChampion Video Productions will teach the technical skills of video productionand editing.10-12 women will participate in 30 hours of class time Wednesday eveningsand Saturdays during April and May.Cost is $350.00 per person.
