Senior News A Grade: Mount Barker 19-16 (130) defeated Torrens Valley 7-5 (47) Best Players: Jamie Groutch, Tom Hughes, Jack Lores, James Hughes, Caine Jinette Goal Kickers: Henry Johnson 5; Simon Nunan , Jack Lores 4; Tom Hughes, Tyson Scott, Michael Higgs, Michael Pope, Lucas Block, Scott Byrt Report: The Barkeroos' final home game for the season against Torrens Valley had a finals-like atmosphere, as the Lions needed a win against the competition leader, to remain in the hunt for finals participation. The Howard Lane surface was better than expected and the fine weather conditions perfect for football. Dale Eichner had his charges

primed for a physical encounter, as the Lions attacked the ball with gusto, often winning the hard ball and attacking with the slight breeze to the old scoreboard end. However, the strong play by James Paprotny through the centre set up Barkeroo goal sneak Henry Johnson to kick the first goal for the home side. Torrens co-captain Dane Thompson earned a free kick and booted the visitors' first goal. The Lions then kicked their second goal through Kurt Waterman, to take the lead. Barkeroo Tyson Scott managed to goal after a goal mouth scramble. Lion co-captain Brad Hunter replied with a long major but a Simon Nunan hand pass assisted Lucas Block to goal. Just before quarter time, Johno kicked his second goal to edge the Roos ahead at the first change. Torrens' Dale Ellis goaled on resumption to keep his team in touch. Goals to Tom Hughes and Jack Lores restored the Barkeroos ascendency. Lion Dale Ellis received a free and goaled but smooth roving skill from Lores and accurate snap for goal gave the home side a three goal advantage at half-time. The first half had been an arm wrestle as the Lions' physical approach kept them in the contest. However, the Roos bounded away from their rivals in the third quarter scoring seven unanswered majors to end the Lions hopes of finals action. Lores, Nunan(twice), Byrt, Higgs, Johno and Pope all goaled to completely deflate the Lions who could not sustain their first half effort. The Barkeroo midfield ran away from their tiring opponents whilst the Roo back line shut down the Lions forwards and rebounded through the Roos' dominant wingmen. Jaime Groutch and Jared Chaplin were particularly effective in pushing up the ground to create a wall across centre.

The Roos won the final quarter, despite former player Tom Eichner booting the first goal of the stanza for the Lions. Birthday boy Michael Pope's strong play enabled Johno to goal. Lion Luke Ellis assisted his brother Dale to bag his third goal for the day but this score was cancelled out when Lores kicked his fourth goal for the match. Johno booted his fifth major and captain Nunan enhanced his chances of winning the end of season goal tally when he kicked two long range majors to finish the game with four. A great win against a difficult opponent and a good hit out for the upcoming finals campaign.

Colts News Senior Colts: Mount Barker 9-7 (61) defeated Torrens Valley (59) Best Players: Ben Pomery, Marko Kovac, Henry Pope, Zac Eichner, Billy Forster Goal Kickers: Scott Haycraft 3; Samson Barratt 2; Alex Oddy, Marko Kovac, Henry Pope, Angus De Wit Match Report: Mount Barker made an impressive start to the match by winning the first centre clearance, which resulted in a goal inside the first minute of the game. Mount Barker’s commitment at each contest set the tone for the day and they were rewarded with a 9 point lead by quarter time. Ben Pomery was given the role to play on Dillon Cotton who had kicked 74 goals for the season. Pomery responded very well to the challenge and kept Cotton very quiet. Pomery was prepared to sacrifice his own game to restrict Cotton. This type of effort has been typical of the team oriented approach the Senior Colts have been working on over the past few weeks. At half time Mount Barker was still holding a 9 point lead. Henry Pope was also assigned a defensive role on key Torrens Valley midfielders. Pope is always prepared to work hard and win his own footy. However importantly when he needs to defend, Pope stands up and always makes it hard for his opponent. During the third quarter, Mount Barker’s delivery skills dropped away and targets were consistently missed. This had a flow on effect with the defensive side of the game also falling away. Torrens Valley worked themselves right back into the game. Fortunately Mount Barker were able to steady and kick a late third quarter goal, which gave them a 7 point lead at the final change. The last quarter required a big effort from the players, and it was pleasing to see them respond. Marko Kovac always shows great composure in heavy traffic and today was no exception. Zac Eichner played a really impressive role up forward. Most pleasing was Eichner’s defensive efforts, which resulted in important turnovers which set up scoring opportunities for Mount Barker. Billy Forster always gives 100% and today was no exception. Forster’s attacked each contest like there was no tomorrow, and backed these efforts up with great poise on the backline, which repelled several Torrens Valley attacks. Mount Barker run out deserving 2 point winners in a nail biter. Junior Colts: Mount Barker 15-8 (98) defeated Torrens Valley 0-3 (3) Best Players: Zack Beck, Henry Bruce, Jake Parsons, Mitch Murphy, James Marston, Austin Abraham Goal Kickers: Rhys Paterson 5; Billy Stokes, Jordan Houlahan 3; Mitch Murphy 2; Jake Parsons, Ryan Weidenhofer

Junior News Under 13 (Central Mount Barker 11-9 (75) defeated Torrens Valley 1-0 (6) Best Players: Brayden Gallas, Kane Lucas, Matthewt Chapman, M Baraglia, Daniel Shepherd Goal Kickers: Matthew Chapman 3; Braydon Gallas, M Baraglia 2; M Veale, Bryce Middleton-Frew Match Report: Finally some sunshine on a Saturday, with the best conditions seen for some time the boy’s set themselves the task of overcoming Torrens Valley. The 1st quarter saw some hard football played by all players that eventually resulted in a 16pt lead at the first break. The quarter time address by coach Pickle rang the changes, backs to forwards, forwards into the centre, centremen to backs. This gave most players an opportunity to play in a different position. The quarter was a hard slog in which each team managed just 1 goal a piece. The third and fourth quarters resulted in more changes and slowly the boy’s got thing’s working and posted 8 goals to nil in the 2nd half, resulting in a comfortable win. It was great to see players being given an opportunity to play in different position’s and to hopefully gain a greater appreciation of the game. Last game this week, let’s see if we can’t cause an upset and beat Lobethal Under 13 (Country): Hahndorf Gold 5-6 (36) defeated Mount Barker Gold 2-6 (18) Best Players: Lachlan Linke, T Elston, William Bruce, Dominic Hampel, J Baraglia, D Manly Goal Kickers: Amos Doyle, Lachlan Linke Match Report: It was friday night footy at its best when Hahndorf came to town winning the toss kicking to the north end, and that they did scoring in the early mins and another soon after. Their kicking and Mt barkers back line stopped their opportunities. Good play by the roos and a long handball by Lachlan gave amos the chance to kick a speedy goal making the first quarter look like an evenly match clash. Our turn at the favourite side of the ground was to no advantage as the pies got the ball up ground several times with their quick hand balling and marks by tall timber awarded them with 1goal 3 while we had the same scoring shots only to get 3

behinds. Quick fearless play from the likes of toby kept the opposition from winning the ball, making some good plays that where missed opportunities. After the main break the sourkrautt kicked in for the pies to get their night vision fine tuned keeping the ball at the wrong end of the field for our team to make a turn around desperately needed to even up the match. The final quarter for the season came quick to Hahndorf as the good coaching by Steve paying off to stop the opposition in their tracks keeping Hahndorf scoreless in the final term and the roos made it a memorable one even with 4 key players out. The team showed excellent skill with some great tackling and kicking giving Lachlan a long bomb only to bounce in the square and somehow finding the boundary line the clock was ticking and again with strength from William kept the ball at our end when Lachlan stood out kicking a nice running goal from 40m. With only seconds left the ball was again heading our way with the roos in high spirits ready for the next thrilling encounter way off in the horizon.= Next Week: Under 13 (Central): Lobethal V Mount Barker @ Lobethal Under 13 (Country): Season Over
