    The Year AheadWelcome to Room Ones exciting journey through 2013. This is my

    fourth year teaching at Kuranui School and I am looking forward to

    forming positive learning partnerships with new and returning children

    and their families. The early years at school are an exhilarating time

    full of firsts for all concerned. Im passionate about making this

    experience positive and productive, growing independent enthusiastic

    learners.

    The purpose of our class newsletter is to keep you informed about our

    learning programmes, expectations, important dates and to celebrate

    successes or special events.

    During Term One all children need to bring:

    - Togs and a towel

    - Sunhat with a wide brim.

    In Room One we recognise that everyone has special talents and we would

    love for you to share yours with us. This might be helping with reading,

    swimming or art just let us know how youd like to be involved.

    Building Blocks for Success

    Reading:

    Monday to Thursday homereaders will come home with

    your child. Please take the timeto listen to your child read,discuss the text and sign yourchilds Read It book each night.Poem books will come home onFridays, these need to bereturned on Monday. Rememberthat having the same book morethan once helps build fluency

    and encourages greaterdiscussion and exploration oftexts. To work towards the100% club children need to reada minimum of five nights perweek.

    Reading Spelling Writing - Maths

    Spelling:

    Between three and ten words willcome home on Friday afternoons in anOwn-Work book, please help yourchild practise reading and writingthese. Suggestions on ways to do thiscan be found at the front of theirown-work book. These books shouldreturn to school every day withtesting being on Fridays.

    Writing:

    Our focus to start the year is onrecount and narrative. We will beworking on correct letter formation,using our spelling words accurately inour personal writing and reading ourwork back (aloud) to check it makes

    sense. Each week children will writesimple sentences including two or morespelling words to further develop wordknowledge.

    Math:

    Developing knowledge of how numberswork, place value, addition andsubtraction and instant recall of basicfacts form the basis of our mathsprogramme. Our focus is on making

    maths real and relevant and learningto problem solve. In addition we willmake early explorations into theconcepts of time, calendars andtimetables.

    Our overarching theme this year is How things change.

    Term Ones integrated topic is based on the Rocky Shore and is entitled

    Life between the Tides. We have already begun to discuss the types of

    things we might find in and around rock pools. If you have pictures of or

    items such as shells that could be shared with the class please send them

    along.

    On Thursday 21 February the whole school will be spending a full day at

    Mount Maunganui undertaking an in depth rocky shore study and

    culminating with a fish and chip dinner. We would love you to bring a

    hat, sun block and join us.
