ROOFING MATERIALS
Prepping Materials
• A roof must be prepped before applying your roofing materials.
• Step one: Nail on Drip cap. This cap us used to prevent water from getting in behind the metal fascia and contacting the wood
• Step two: Install water and ice membrane. This material is a rubber membrane that has adhesive on one side that sticks the roof. This is usually added in areas where you might get a lot of water running and ice build up.
• Step Three: Lay the felt paper (tar paper). This is usually laid over entire roof (it doesn’t have to be but building code is starting to lean that way)
• Step Four: Placing roof vents. There are several types. The number of vents depends on the amount attic space that needs to be vented. There is 1 vent required for every 150 square feet of attic space. This also depends on the type of attic vents you used.
Type of attic vents
• Plastic and Aluminum Vents
• Turbine vent
• Ridge Vents
Gable Vents
SOFFIT VENTS

Clay roof

• Requires little maintenance, and is fire, mold and insect resistant.
• Fragile, and expensive.
Slate Shingles
• Actual slivers of rock used as shingles.
• Long lifespan.
• Similar to clay.
• Heavy and requires a strong roof.
