1942 - 1960 Nace una leyendaDe verdadero nombre Ronald James Padovana, naci el 10 de Julio de1942 en Portsmouth, New Hampshire (EEUU) aunque pronto setrasladara junto a sus padres, inmigrantes italianos, al condado deCortland, New York a una comunidad italiana de clase media.

En su niez, Ronnie se mostraba interesadopor el deporte. Realmente su ilusin era jugar al bisbol, pero su padrevio que ese no sera el mejor futuro para su hijo y cuando ste cumpli loscinco aos le regal una trompeta. Dio estuvo practicando con latrompeta durante cuatro horas diarias hasta que cumpli los diecisiete.Este fue el nico instrumento que Ronnie realmente lleg a estudiar y apunto estuvo de convertirse en un gran trompetista llegando incluso atocar en la Cortland High Jazz Band y lograr una beca para la academiade msica de Julliard.Pero este no era el camino que Ronnie pretenda seguir y abandono

ambos. En la adolescencia, y en medio de una espectacular tendencia enexpansin como era el Rock, Dio pens que haba cometido un error al

dedicar todos esos aos a la trompeta. Pero, ms adelante, el tiempo lehara cambiar de parecer. En aquellos momentos l se interesaba porinstrumentos como la guitarra, los teclados o el bajo. Y fue ste ltimo elque le acompaara durante largos aos hasta los tiempos, en aquelentonces lejanos, de Elf.En los aos de escuela, Ronnie form su primera banda; "The VegasKings", concretamente a principios del ao 1957 junto a Nick Pantas a laguitarra y Tom Rogers a la batera. l mismo se ocupara ya del bajo y lasvoces pero sin dejar de lado la trompeta. A finales de ao se incorporaJack Musci al saxofn y pasan a llamarse "Ronnie & the Rumblers".Comenzaron a actuar los fines de semana en discotecas localesobteniendo una buena acogida. Rpidamente estaban tocando en fiestasuniversitarias, auditorios, bailes... hasta que se dio la oportunidad de salirde la ciudad, pero se vieron obligados por el promotor a cambiar denuevo el nombre al grupo. As, "Ronnie & the Redcaps" sera el apelativodefinitivo durante unos aos.

Estamos ya bien avanzados en 1958 y laentrada de Billy De Wolf a la voz deja a Ronnie ocuparse plenamente delbajo y la trompeta. Gracias a un contacto del hermano de Nick, acceden agrabar un single en un estudio independiente de la ciudad. Seran dostemas; "Lover", interpretada por Billy De Wolf y "Conquest" en la cara B,tema instrumental firmado por Ronnie y Pantas, en la cual podemosescuchar a Dio tocando la trompeta.Al poco tiempo de grabar el single, Billy De Wolf abandona el grupoinmerso en turbios asuntos que le conducen a prisin. Tambin, aunquepor motivos diferentes y ya en 1960, Jack Musci dejar a sus amigos parano desatender sus estudios. Segn ciertas fuentes fue ese el ao en queDio consigue su graduacin en la Courtland High.

1960 - 1968 Aos de Rock & RollNick, Ronnie y Tom se plantean una nueva estructura para el grupo. Conla incorporacin de Dick Bottoff como segunda guitarra, "Ronnie & theRedcaps" se lanzan a la grabacin de su segundo sencillo. Es este elmomento en que Ronnie toma una decisin que le acompaar durantetoda su carrera y como no, toda su vida. Sacado de un libro de gangsterstomara para s el nombre del lider mafioso; "Dio", sin saber hastatiempos de "Black Sabbath" que en italiano significaba "Dios" (tengamosen cuenta que en ingls "Dios" se traduce como "God" y no hay unaasociacin aparente entre ambos trminos). "- Ciertamente no tom esenombre siendo consciente de ello. No tengo tanto ego!" declaraba Ronnieaos despus en una entrevista.

Volviendo a la grabacin del nuevo single de los"Redcaps" y bajo el seudnimo de Ronnie Dio, se graban los temas "AnAngel is Missing" y " What'd I Say". Tras la edicin de ste, una vez mscambiaran de nombre por "Ronnie & the Prophets". A partir de aqullegaran los frutos a todo el esfuerzo de sus primeras andadas. Entre1961 y 1967 se sucederan la grabacin de varios singles, combinandoversiones con algn que otro tema propio, e incluso editaron un L.P. envivo titulado "Dio at Domino's" el 24 de Febrero de 1963. El Domino's esun restaurante situado en Main Street, Courtland y a da de hoy hay uncartel a la entrada con la inscripcin: "We Rock" en homenaje a su carrera.

Durante ese periodo la formacin de componentes se vioalterada por la marcha en 1965 de Tom Rogers, sustituido por GaryDriscoll, y en 1966 David Feinstein ocupara el lugar a la guitarra de DickBottoff. De estos aos nos quedan grandes canciones, que aunque nadatienen que ver con lo que sera Dio en un futuro, s tienen un encantopropio si tenemos en cuenta los aos de que hablamos. Escucharcanciones como "Walking Alone", "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow","Where You Gonna Run To Girl", "Smiling By Day" o "The Way Of Love"cantadas por Ronnie es algo que a cualquier amante de la carrera de Diono puede dejar indiferente.La fiebre Beatle haca furor en todo el mundo y la msica empezaba amover masas hasta entonces impensables. Ronnie, impresionado ante lamagnitud de esto y sintindose atrado por las nuevas corrientesmusicales no dud en dar un giro de 180 en una direccin con ms y

mejores expectativas de futuro. Dio quera componer y tocar sus propiostemas, as que en el otoo de 1967 "Ronnie & the Prophets" dice adis alRhythm & Blues.

1968 - 1972 La influencia BeatleDio toma las riendas del nuevo proyecto llamado "The Electric Elves"(Los elfos elctricos) nombre por cierto muy acertado si tenemos encuenta que Ronnie era el ms alto de todos. Tambin en aquel momentose incorpora Doug Thaler a los teclados. La onda que pretenden seguir esla marcada por la nueva oleada de grupos de Pop-Rock que sacuden lasradios de todo el mundo y esto se deja ver en su primer y nico single.Los temas son "Hey Look Me Over" en la cara "A" y "It Pays ToAdvertise" en la "B". El cambio es ms que considerable y no cabe dudade que se vayan aproximando a un sonido cada vez ms personal.Pero la fatalidad llegar el da 12 de Febrero de 1968 cuando, volviendo

de una gira en Connecticut, sufren un accidente en carretera contra unconductor borracho. Nick Pantas, que conduca la furgoneta, falleci en

aquel trgico accidente. Ronnie, quien viajaba como copiloto, tuvo unafortsima brecha en la cabeza y necesito de intervencin quirrgica.Feinstein sufri heridas leves y Doug Thaler quedo postrado en unacamilla durante el resto del ao.

A raz del accidente, el grupo dara otro cambio. Mickey Lee Soule sehizo cargo de los teclados y Doug Thaler pas a tocar la guitarra rtmica.Recortaron el nombre a "The Elves" y para ese mismo ao habrangrabado un single "Walking in Different Circles"/"She's Not the Same".En verano de 1969 volveran a grabar otro sencillo, "AmberVelvet"/"West Virginia".Est formacin permanecera hasta 1972, ao en que nace "Elf".

1972 - 1975 ElfA principios de 1972 Doug Thaler abandona el grupo y Ronnie, Soule,

Driscoll y Feinstein se quedan como cuarteto. Es en este preciso momentoque la suerte les sonreira como nunca antes. Un encuentro casual con IanPaice y Roger Glover de Deep Purple acabara siendo la oportunidad desu vida cuando stos se mostraron interesados en producirles un disco yofrecerles ser teloneros de Deep Purple en las prximas giras. As portanto, la grabacin del primer LP, titulado simplemente "Elf", se llev acabo en ese mismo ao bajo el sello Purple Records.Tras esto es Feinstein quien decide abandonar el grupo y Dio por su

parte se despoja definitivamente del bajo. Steve Edwards y Craig Gruberrespectivamente ocuparan las plazas vacantes. Este cambio no hara sino

afianzar ms la estructura de la banda y gracias a ello y las sucesivasgiras como teloneros de Deep Purple les iba proporcionando mucha mspopularidad.En 1974 y tambin con la produccin de Glover, la banda entra de nuevoal estudio para grabar "Carolina County Ball" aunque en EEUU fueeditado bajo el nombre de "L.A. 59" con una portada diferente a la edicininglesa.

Fueron aos intensos para el grupo. Por un lado se sucedan las giras conDeep Purple. Dio y Mickey Lee Soule fueron invitados por Roger Glovera participar en su proyecto en solitario "Butterfly Ball" al lado de gente dela talla de Glenn Hughes, David Coverdale, Eddie Hardin o John Lawton.Y por otro lado empezaron a surgir las primeras tomas de contacto entreDio y Ritchie Blackmore preliminares a lo que luego sera Rainbow. Deesos das surgi un single grabado por Elf y Blackmore conteniendo"Black Sheep of the Family" y "16th Century Greensleeves" aunque no sesabe a ciencia cierta si llego a ser editado.Los acontecimientos se iban sucediendo rpidamente. A principios de1975 Elf vuelve al estudio para grabar su tercer y ltimo lbum: "Tryingto Burn the Sun". Una vez ms producido por Glover y en el cual tambinaparece Mark Nauseef como percusionista. Pero el disco no fue ms queun precipitado, aunque no por ello menos meritorio trabajo, punto y finala Elf. Antes de que el disco estuviese en las tiendas, Elf ya se habadisuelto para unirse al proyecto en solitario del ex-Deep Purple RitchieBlackmore.

1975 - 1978 Alcanzando el arco irisRitchie Blackmore tena el punto de mira fijado sobre Ronnie James Dio.l era el candidato perfecto para dar voz a un proyecto que venatramando haca tiempo. Pero cuando Ritchie le hizo la propuesta a Dio,ste se mostr de acuerdo con una sola condicin. Que el resto decomponentes de Elf fuesen invitados al nuevo grupo. Ronnie llevabademasiados aos luchando junto a ellos y no era su intencin dejarlestirados a la primera de cambio.Dicho y hecho, Mickey Lee Soule, Craig Gruber y Gary Driscoll se

subieron tambin al tren. nicamenteSteve Edwards se qued sin invitacin a la fiesta por motivos evidentes yMark Nauseef simplemente no quiso embarcarse en el proyecto.El primer lbum fue editado bajo el nombre de "Ritchie BlackmoresRainbow", en la primavera del 75. En l se incluyeron los temasanteriormente grabados como single, estando todava Ritchie en DeepPurple, "Black Sheep of the Family" y "Sixteenth Century Greensleeves"junto a varias piezas ya clsicas como "Man On the Silver Mountain","Catch the Rainbow" o "Temple of the King".La acogida por parte del pblico y prensa fue ms bien fra tachndolesde ser un flojo calco de Deep Purple. Esto no debi de gustar a Blackmore

y pronto empez a hacer cambios en la formacin. El primero en irse fueGruber, poco despus de la edicin del disco. Y el resto no tardaron enser despedidos sin tan siquiera haber actuado en directo. As, Blackmorese haba quedado con la pieza que le interesaba para su ajedrezparticular; Dio.Llegaba el momento de reclutar a nuevos miembros. Cozy Powell fue elprimero en llegar, le siguieron el bajista Jimmy Bain, con quien Dioforjara una gran amistad y Tony Carey a los teclados.Con Rainbow otra vez reconstruido hicieron una gira no muy extensapor Estados Unidos antes de encerrarse de nuevo en el estudio para dar aluz lo que para muchos sera la obra maestra del grupo. Rainbow "Rising"se grab entre Febrero y Mayo de 1976 con la produccin de Martin Birchquien ya haba participado en el anterior lbum.

Rising es una pieza clave dentro del Hard Rock de la poca. Lricas decarcter pico, riffs y melodas densas, una de las ms impresionantesportadas y una de las mejores formaciones que se puedan recordar. Ahquedan temas de la talla de "A Light in the Black", "Tarot Woman","Starstruck" o la sublime "Stargazer". La gira mundial que precedi a lasalida del disco al mercado, desde Junio hasta finales de ao, fuearrolladora. Estados Unidos, Japn, Australia y varios pases europeosfueron testigos de ello. De aqu saldran los lbumes "On Stage" editadoen 1977 y "Live in Germany" que no vio la luz hasta 1990 (Tambintitulado "Live in Europe" en la edicin americana de 1996) y variasdecenas de grabaciones piratas. Tras la gira, Jimmy Bain es expulsado delgrupo y sustituido por el ex-Uriah Heep Mark Clark. Durante ese periodola banda entra de nuevo al estudio para grabar el que sera su tercertrabajo. Pero las grabaciones se suspenden hasta el otoo tras variosproblemas internos que desencadenan en la sustitucin de Mark Clark yTony Carey por Bob Daisley y David Stone respectivamente.

Con esta nueva alineacin, Rainbow ofrece una gira por Europa parapromocionar "On Stage".Durante el tour, concretamente el da 20 de octubre, en el Olympiahallede Munich (Alemania) la televisin germana graba en video el eventopero este nunca se lleg a publicar de manera oficial.Finalizada esta gira en febrero de 1978, el grupo retoma la grabacin desu tercer disco titulado "Long Live Rock and Roll" una vez msproducido por Martin Birch. Ah nos quedan temas clsicos como puedenser "Gates of Babylon", "Kill the King", "Rainbow Eyes" o el temahomnimo del disco.

La nueva gira no se hace esperar. "Long Live" sale a las tiendas en abril ypara mayo ya estn de nuevo en ruta por Estados Unidos. Mas laactividad del grupo era inversamente proporcional a los intereses deRitchie Blackmore quien pretenda encaminar el sonido de Rainbow haciaotra onda ms comercial y posiblemente ms jugosa econmicamente.Una vez acabada la gira en noviembre del 78 las opciones eran pocas; o elresto seguan el camino que Blackmore les indicaba o ellos mismos sepodan largar por el que ellos quisieran. Tan slo Cozy Powell continudurante otra grabacin ms. Ronnie, Daisley y Stone fueron sustituidospor Graham Bonnet, Roger Glover y Don Airey respectivamente. Elsonido ms clsico de Rainbow tena por entonces los das contados.

1978 - 1982 Un viaje del cielo al infiernoTras la salida de Rainbow, Dio pens en formar su propia banda. Peroeso sera por poco tiempo ya que una llamada telefnica de Tony Iommi,guitarrista de Black Sabbath, le hara considerar la oferta de unirse almtico grupo. Dio se traslad junto con su esposa Wendy, desde Nueva

York hasta Los Angeles en su propio coche a lo largo de miles de Km.

Black Sabbath por aquel entonces pasaba por un mal periodo. Losexcesos con el alcohol y las drogas hacan mella en la banda. Las crticashacia sus ltimos discos tampoco eran del todo buenas, y las actuacionesen directo apenas lograban salvar al grupo de una cada en picado.Consciente de ello, Tony Iommi opt por prescindir definitivamente deOzzy Osbourne despus de una dcada como vocalista de Black Sabbath.Aunque a decir verdad, no se sabe ciertamente si fue despedido o sisimplemente fue Ozzy quin se march por si mismo.

Sea como sea, Dio, Tony Iommi, Gezer Butler y Bill Ward saban que erauna tarea difcil sacar a la banda del agujero en que estaba metida. Pero lafusin Sabbath/Dio fue fulminante. Contra todo pronostico, la edicindel disco "Heaven & Hell" fue un mazazo que hizo tambalear a todosaquellos escpticos que daban al grupo por muerto. "Heaven & Hell" noslo devolvi a Black Sabbath a lo ms alto sino que se convirti en unode los mejores discos, ya no solamente del grupo, si no de la historia delHard Rock y el Heavy Metal.Uno de los factores clave para ello fue el ponerse en manos del productorMartin Birch, probablemente el ms respetado productor dentro delHeavy Metal, con quin Ronnie ya haba trabajado durante sus aos enRainbow, consiguiendo un sonido extremadamente potente y compacto.No obstante no todo fue fcil. En un principio, Geezer y Ward se oponan

a la marcha de Ozzy y por ello Geezer Butler tambin se fue durante uncorto periodo. En ese lapso de tiempo uno de los sustitutos fue CraigGruber, me supongo que a sugerencia de Dio y tambin Geoff Nichollsquien luego pasara a ser el teclista semi-oficial de la banda por muchotiempo. Finalmente Butler regres al grupo para grabar el lbum ycomenzar la gira de presentacin de "Heaven & Hell" por el otoo de1980.

Debido a problemas con el alcohol es ahora Bill Ward quien tiene queabandonar en plena gira. Para sustituirle fichan a Vinny Appice, hermanode Carmine Appice, proveniente de Axis y Derringer entre otros. La giracontinu su rumbo y una vez ms volvieron al estudio para grabar elsiguiente LP titulado "Mob Rules". El resultado fue un disco ms oscuro ydenso que sufrira el estar siempre a la sombra de su predecesor. Laproduccin corri una vez ms a cargo de Martin Birch y se edit enNoviembre de 1981.Tras la gira de Mob Rules comenzaron a surgir serios problemas ydiversas acusaciones que acabaran por romper las relaciones entreIommi/Buttler y Dio /Appice. Los motivos son siempre dispares y casisiempre poco fiables, por lo que me limitar a decir que antes de la

edicin de "Live Evil", el doble directo grabado durante la giraAmericana, Ronnie James Dio y Vinny Appice haban cogido las maletaspara embarcarse en un proyecto en solitario dejando atrs una de lasetapas ms trascendentes en la historia de Black Sabbath. .

1982 - 1990 DIOAntes de cortar las relaciones con Black Sabbath, Dio ya haba empezadoa componer bastante material junto a Vinny Appice para retomar suanterior idea de formar su propia banda. Para ocupar el puesto de bajista,Dio record a su ex-compaero en Rainbow y amigo, Jimmy Bain, enaquel momento en "Wild Horses", y este accedi gustosamente a unirse alnuevo proyecto.A su vez Bain le habl acerca de un joven guitarrista Ingls que le habasorprendido por su gran tcnica a las seis cuerdas. Su nombre era Vivian

Campbell y perteneca a un grupo llamado "Sweet Savage" con quieneshaba grabado tan solamente un single unos aos atrs. Cuando Ronnie

escuch su forma de tocar no dudo un momento en invitarle a formarparte de la banda.Otro de los candidatos para el puesto era el guitarrista de origen japons,Jake E. Lee quin en aquel entonces tocaba con una banda de Los Angelesllamada Rough Cutt y quin aos ms tarde sera conocido por su trabajoen la banda de Ozzy Osbourne.

Con el grupo al completo y ya entrado el ao 1983, viajaron nuevamentea Los Angeles para grabar su lbum debut producido por el propioRonnie. Tambin por ese entonces l se dedicaba a producir a travs de laagencia de su mujer Wendy, Niji Productions, a nuevos grupos comoHellion o los mencionados Rough Cutt quienes telonearan a Dio durantesus primeras giras.Volviendo a la grabacin de "Holy Diver", el resultado fue probablementeel disco ms alabado de su carrera en solitario. Las ventas de "HolyDiver" alcanzaron disco de platino en Norte Amrica aunque tambinsufri una fuerte acometida por parte de ciertos sectores debido a lapolmica portada, pero Dio siempre sostuvo que sta simbolizaba a unpederasta.En este plstico quedaron inmortalizados temas como "Stand Up andShout", "Rainbow in the Dark", "Don't Talk to Strangers" o la propia"Holy Diver".La gira comenz el 23 de Julio de 1983 en California. Jimmy Bain y elpropio Dio haban grabado los teclados para Holy Diver pero necesitabanun teclista para las actuaciones en directo. Claude Schnell (tambin ex-Rough Cutt) fue el elegido, aunque no figur como integrante de labanda hasta la edicin de "The Last in Line". Schnell actu detrs delescenario hasta el tour de Sacred Heart.Tras la gira, el grupo regres a los estudios de grabacin para preparar

su segundo lbum "The Last in Line", lanzado en Julio de 1984.Al margen de gustos personales u otras opiniones, la entrada de Claude

Schnell y quizs un mayor presupuesto hicieron de "The Last in Line" undisco ms elaborado desde un punto de vista tcnico. El sonido generaldel lbum super a su predecesor y se convirti en un clsico de la pocaa la altura de "Holy Diver". Tambin aqu lograran el disco de platino enEstados Unidos.

Nuevamente de gira hasta finales de Enero de 1985 y vuelta al estudio. Eltercer trabajo de la banda result ser menos fresco que los dos anteriores,los motivos son tan dispares como imprecisos, pero lo cierto es que elclima entre Vivian Campbell y Ronnie James Dio era un tanto tensodebido a posibles diferencias musicales.Todo esto hizo mella en las composiciones de "Sacred Heart" (1985) que apesar de contener canciones ya clsicas de la talla de "Hungry forHeaven", "Rock and Roll Children" o "Sacred Heart" no llegaban al nivelofrecido con anterioridad. Tampoco la produccin estuvo muy acertada yel sonido general qued bastante empobrecido.A pesar de que la gira fue bien, en la que se ofreca un impresionanteespectculo visual con el famoso dragn "Denzil" y dems pirotecnia, lastensiones acumuladas terminaron con la marcha de Vivian Campbell enMarzo de 1986 poco antes de comenzar la gira europea.Pero antes de que eso ocurriera, se llevara a cabo el proyecto benfico"Hear 'n Aid" ideado en su concepcin por Jimmy Bain, Vivian Campbelly Ronnie James Dio como la alternativa 'dura' musicalmente hablando al"We Are the World" de USA for Africa, y que logr reunir a un elenco demsicos de la talla de Rob Halford, Geoff Tate, Kevin Dubrow, YngwieMalmsteen, Don Dokken, Eddie Ojeda o los guitarristas de Iron Maiden,Adrian Smith y Dave Murray entre muchos otros. El resultado, un LP conmaterial indito de varios grupos y el tema "Stars" como pieza estrella.El nuevo guitarrista de Dio sera el joven Craig Goldy quien hubieramilitado anteriormente en Rough Cutt y Giuffria.Dio planeaba editar un doble lbum en directo extrado de esta gira pero

tras diversos problemas con la discogrfica, todo qued en un mini-lbum sin excesiva trascendencia titulado "Intermission". Quizs lo msdestacable de l sea un nuevo tema grabado en estudio llamado "Time toBurn" con Goldy en la guitarra. El resto de la grabacin pertenece a lagira americana an con Vivian Campbell como guitarrista.Durante los primeros meses de 1987, Dio estuvo componiendo materialpara lo que sera el cuarto disco del grupo en estudio. "Dream Evil" salial mercado en Mayo de ese mismo ao y, a pesar de recuperar la magiade los dos primeros, las crticas de los medios especializados no fueronpara nada buenas. Muchas tacharon a "Dream Evil" de mantener losmismos clichs que en discos anteriores. Pero lo cierto es que ah quedantemas imponentes como "Night People", "Naked in the Rain", "I CouldHave Been a Dreamer" o la pica "All the Fools Sailed Away".

Al igual que pas con Vivian Campbell en su momento, los problemasempezaron a surgir de nuevo, esta vez entre Ronnie y Craig. Y la bandase encontr nuevamente sin guitarrista.Dio recibi del orden de las 5000 cintas magnticas enviadas desde todoel mundo de posibles aspirantes al puesto. Y, para asombro de muchos,un muchacho de tan solo 19 aos llamado Rowan Robertson fue elelegido.A Jimmy Bain, Claude Schnell y algo ms tarde a Vinny Appice no debide parecerles bien el cambi que Ronnie pretenda dar al grupo y todosellos abandonaron la nave.Lejos de decir adis a su carrera como DIO, Ronnie y Rowan siguieronreclutando sangre joven para la nueva formacin. Al final Simon Wright(ex-AC/DC) a la batera, Jens Johansson (ex-Yngwie Malmsteen) a losteclados y un desconocido bajista llamado Teddy Cook, vinieron apresenciar la nueva, y no muy larga, etapa de Dio.

1990 - 2000 Los aos oscuros de Dio.A principios de 1990, la nueva formacin viaj a los estudios Granny'sHouse para registrar el nuevo disco. Hasta ese momento todos los discosde Dio haban sido producidos por el propio Ronnie, pero en est ocasinTony Platt co-producira junto a Dio el nuevo trabajo.A pesar del nuevo espritu de la banda, y el sonido ms modernizado de"Lock Up the Wolves", la cada cada vez ms pronunciada de la bandapareca no tener solucin.

Pero durante la gira por Estados Unidos, llamada "Throw 'em to theWolves Tour", habra de suceder algo especialmente significativo enaquel momento. Geezer Butler tuvo conocimiento de que Dio actuara enMineapolis el 28 de Agosto de 1990 as que se puso en contacto con ldicindole que ira a ver el concierto y que despus tal vez se podrantomar una cerveza juntos. Dio acept la propuesta con la condicin deque Geezer subiese a tocar un tema con la banda. Efectivamente, y ante elasombro de los all presentes, Geezer Butler sali acompaando al grupoal final de la actuacin en la cancin "Neon Knights". Las conjeturas deuna posible reunin empezaban a ser evidentes. En la charla que Butler yDio mantuvieron despus del concierto hablaron desde la perspectivaque ofrece el paso del tiempo y pensaron que podra ser un buenmomento para reunir a la clsica formacin. Tony Iommi estuvototalmente de acuerdo desde un principio, as que slo quedabapendiente el puesto de batera.Dado que Cozy Powell era el batera de Black Sabbath en aquel momento,al principio estuvo involucrado en el proyecto y efectivamente existenvarias grabaciones no oficiales de su aportacin a lo que sera

"Dehumanizer". Pero debido a un lamentable accidente mientras montabaa caballo, no fue l sino Vinny Appice quien grabase el disco e hiciese lagira.Desde un primer momento y tanto por parte del management de BlackSabbath como de Niji Productions, qued claro que esto slo sera unareunin para un LP y una gira mundial. Tras eso, las cosas volveran a sercomo lo eran hasta entonces. Y aunque al final as sucedi, quizs lascosas hubieran podido ser diferentes.El caso es que "Dehumanizer" sali a la calle con mucha expectacin porparte de seguidores y crticos, y si bien el lbum no llegaba a la altura delos clsicos "Heaven & Hell" y "Mob Rules", sin duda era un gran trabajo.Lamentablemente la prensa de la poca no valor este disco en su justamedida basndose principalmente en comparaciones un tanto odiosas.La gira mundial tuvo lugar entre Junio y Noviembre de 1992 pero lasombra de la disputa, al igual que ocurriera diez aos atrs, apareci atan slo dos fechas del final de la gira. Las dos ltimas actuacionesestaban fechadas para los das catorce y quince de Noviembre en CostaMesa, California. En esos dos das el cabeza de cartel iba a ser ni ms nimenos que Ozzy Osbourne y Dio, temindose una posible treta por partede Iommi y Butler de reunir a la formacin original, decidi no ofreceresas actuaciones.La banda cont con un cantante de lujo para suplir la ausencia de Dio y

ese fue Rob Halford. Efectivamente, como Dio haba supuesto, la bandaoriginal se reuni para un set final de cuatro temas dejando las puertasabiertas para la tan esperada reunin.

Como una rueda que gira eternamente, Ronnie y Vinny (quien s realizaquellos ltimos conciertos) se vieron en una situacin similar a la vividaen 1982. En un intento de recuperar los buenos aos de Dio como banda,llamaron a Jimmy Bain para el puesto de bajista aunque apenas estuvounos meses en el grupo. Despus Ronnie pregunt a su amigo el ex-

Dokken Jeff Pilson si estaba interesado en formar con Dio y ste accedigustosamente. Pilson tambin grab los teclados del nuevo lbumaunque para la gira entrara a formar parte el ex-Warrant Scott Warrenquien actualmente contina en el seno del grupo.Pero sin duda alguna, la piedra angular de una banda de Rock es elguitarrista y en este caso fue probablemente el miembro ms "apedreado"de Dio. Tracy Grijalva haba formado en 1990 junto a Vinny Appice yJimmy Bain en una banda llamada WWIII por tanto fue invitado a haceruna prueba. El estilo de Tracy difera mucho del sonido ms conservadorde los anteriores guitarristas, inclinndose ms por un estilo industrial enel sentido musical de la palabra. Aunque Tracy gustaba mucho de utilizarsonidos novedosos con muchos efectos, en realidad se puede decir queperteneca a la escuela de Tony Iommi y no hay ms que escuchar elresultado en el lbum que Dio estaba gestando. "Strange Highways" tomdeliberadamente el relevo de lo que haba sido "Dehumanizer"conservando un abierto paralelismo, tanto en las lricas como en lasestructuras y sonido, con el plstico de Black Sabbath.Por primera vez Ronnie se desentendi de las labores de produccindejndolo todo (o gran parte) en manos del productor Mike Fraser quintambin trabaj ms o menos por aquellos aos en el proyectoCoverdale/Page. Sinceramente la produccin de "Strange Highways" fueimpecable y goza de un estupendo sonido y de una gran calidad enmuchos aspectos. No obstante este nuevo sonido ms crudo que nunca deDio, le llev a lo que fueron los aos ms oscuros en la carrera de RonnieJames. Las actuaciones en directo no acababan de convencer a un ampliosector del pblico que no dudaba en abuchear a Tracy G. por su forma deentender y ejecutar los clsicos. Aunque con todo, la gira se alargdurante todo un ao con un lapso entre Enero de 1994 y Mayo de ese

mismo ao.Finalizada la gira en Octubre, Jeff Pilson abandona para unirse de nuevo

a Dokken no sin antes ofrecerse para la grabacin del prximo disco. Y esen ese preciso momento en el que Dio empieza a preparar nuevo

material. Se suceden cantidad de rumores en torno a un posible proyectojunto a Steve Vai, cambios de formacin, etc, etc. pero todo se queda en loque era; rumores. Lo que si fue cierto fue la entrada por un corto tiempodel bajista Jerry Best quin permaneci en la banda durante lapreparacin del nuevo LP y actu en unas pocas fechas a finales de 1995en Brasil.Ya en 1996 Jeff Pilson regresa exclusivamente para grabar el nuevo discotitulado "Angry Machines" y esta vez s estuvo producido por el propioRonnie. "Angry Machines" segua la pauta marcada por su precursor perolas crticas fueron an peores y el publico cada vez se iba distanciandoms y ms.En 1996 salt la noticia a la calle de una inminente reunin de Dio yRitchie Blackmore para resucitar Rainbow, pero aunque ms tarde fueconfirmado que efectivamente los rumores estaban bien fundados, uncambi repentino de parecer de Blackmore llev al traste lo que podahaber sido un acontecimiento nico.Entre aproximadamente Noviembre de 1996 y Noviembre de 1999 labanda se mantiene casi sin descanso en ruta presentando "AngryMachines" primero e "Inferno: The Last in Live" despus, un doble directograbado durante dicha gira.Estos tres aos fueron un tanto confusos en cuanto a cambios de

formacin. Larry Dennisson sustituy a Jeff Pilson al bajo duranteprcticamente todo ese espacio de tiempo y es l quien aparece en loscrditos de "Inferno". Bob Daisley, Jimmy Bain y Chuck Garric fueronotros bajistas que pasaron por Dio en ese tiempo.Tampoco Vinny Appice toc en todas las fechas debido a una neumona yfue sustituido por James Kottak en algunas fechas en Estados Unidos,hasta que finalmente en Mayo de 1997 Appice abandona definitivamenteDIO hasta la fecha para volver junto a Black Sabbath. Simon Wright sevolvi a sentar tras los timbales como lo hubiera hecho algunos aosatrs.

Pero de todos estos cambios, idas y venidas, quizs el ms significativofuese el regreso de Craig Goldy. Fue aproximadamente en Junio de 1999,Ronnie se plante la idea de tener dos guitarristas ya que se encontrabaen una difcil situacin. Por un lado su corazn y su gran estima porTracy G. le impeda despedirle directamente, y por otro no poda sostenerdurante ms tiempo los ruegos de los fans de un cambio drstico en eserespecto. As es que Dio llam a Craig Goldy para retomar ese sonidoclsico y a la vez mantener a Grijalva dentro. Pero ante la propuesta,Tracy decidi irse por su propia cuenta argumentando no poder tocarjunto a otro guitarrista sin referirse a Craig Goldy en particular.Con todo esto nos encontramos a las puertas del nuevo milenio con unaformacin destinada a retomar el sonido ms clsico de Dio.Goldy, Bain, Wright, Warren y Ronnie.

2000 - 2005 Una vuelta al pasado.Antes de centrarnos en la trayectoria del grupo a partir de este punto,habra que hacer una mencin especial a un acontecimiento concreto entorno a estos aos que tuvo gran relevancia, hablamos de la gira realizadapor Deep Purple conmemorando el treinta aniversario del album"Concerto for Group and Orchestra". El punto de partida fueron los das25 y 26 de Septiembre de 1999 cuando la banda actu en el Royal AlbertHall de Londres acompaada por la Orquesta Sinfnica de Londres yvarios invitados relacionados con la familia Purple, entre ellos Ronnie

James dio. Este acto qued plasmado tanto en CD como en DVD.

Posteriormente la gira se ampliara por todo el mundo durante variosaos en fechas concretas.

Bien, centrmonos nuevamente en Dio. Con el regreso de Craig Goldy yJimmy Bain, y bajo el influjo de un nuevo resurgir del Heavy Metal entodo el mundo, Dio se estaba preparando para retomar el camino quemuchos consideraban ya perdido. La edicin de Magica en la primaverade 2000 supuso algo ms que un soplo de aire fresco, en realidad estamoshablando de una de las obras ms complejas y elaboradas de Dio. Magicafue la primera parte de una obra conceptual basada en un relatofantstico escrito por el propio Ronnie. Y al margen de la estructuracompleja en si, estamos ante un trabajo musicalmente muy elaborado ycon un sonido que retornaba en cierta medida a los aos 80. Tanto crticoscomo fans no dudaron en considerar el regreso de Craig Goldy como unade las mejores bazas jugadas por Dio en muchos aos.

Pero despues de la gira y cuando ya todo estaba preparado para entrar agrabar su siguiente lbum en 2002, Goldy anuncia de nuevo su partida dela banda alegando otra vez diferencias musicales.Doug Aldrich (ex-Lion, House of Lords) entro para grabar el nuevo discotitulado "Killing the Dragon" que no haca sino consolidar el sonido msfresco de Dio en muchos aos con temas rpidos como "Better in theDark", "Along Comes a Spider" o la pegadiza "Push". De la gira mundial

realizada por el grupo se edit lo que sera el primer DVD oficial de Dio."Evil or Divine" lanzado en 2003 mostraba a una banda llena de fuerza ytodos pudimos comprobar como Ronnie a pesar de los aos, era capaz deofrecer espectculos de gran calidad y soltura.

Finalizada la gira en Diciembre de2002, Aldrich expuso a Ronnie su intencin de realizar la gira de losreformados Whitesnake de David Coverdale y tal vez un disco. Dio nopuso ninguna pega al respecto pero al acercarse el verano y con l lasegunda vuelta de la gira, todo apuntaba a que Aldrich no tena intencinde regresar a Dio. Con esto, el grupo estaba de nuevo sin guitarrista.Warren De Martini (Ex-Ratt) fue uno de los candidatos para suplir laausencia de Aldrich, pero fue nuevamente Craig Goldy quien volverauna vez ms al seno de la formacin.En el ao 2004 el grupo empieza a trabajar en nuevos temas para unnuevo lbum que en un principio se rumoreaba que fuera la esperadacontinuacin de la triloga "Magica". Pero "Master of the Moon" resultser un trabajo totalmente independiente. Si bien en este compacto lostemas no gozan del sonido directo de su predecesor, si es cierto que Diorecuper ese halo un tanto oscuro que le carazteriz en muchas de susobras. Un disco para descubrir poco a poco.A destacar el hecho de que las lneas de bajo fueron grabadas por Jeff

Pilson despues de que Ronnie despidiese a Jimmy Bain por quin sabe yaque vez. No obstante Pilson unicamente hizo el trabajo de estudio. Para laposterior gira, Dio fich a uno de los bajistas clsicos en la esfera delHeavy Metal; Mr. Rudy Sarzo (Ex- Quiet Riot, Ozzy Osbourne,Whitesnake) quin hasta fecha de hoy sigue formando parte del grupo.

Muchos son los proyectos que Ronnie James Dio tiene en mente ymuchas las sorpresas que este hombre puede darnos a todos los queamamos su trabajo y su persona, as que aqu pongo un punto y seguidoa esta biografa que espero se alargue muchas ms pginas en un futuro.Etapa final

Ronnie James Dio, aun siendo ya sexagenario, continu grabando discos, realizando

giras y conciertos. Volvi a reunirse con los antiguos miembros de Black Sabbath en

Heaven and Hell y realizaron una gira mundial para el 2007-2009 donde pasaron porEuropa, Asia, EE. UU., Mxico y Sudamrica.

En abril de 2009 sali a la venta el nuevo disco de la formacin de Heaven and Hell

llamado The Devil You Know, este CD cont con diez canciones nuevas y fue motivo

de una gira mundial. El primer single de dicho album fue la gran cancin "Bible Black".

Cncer y muerte

El 25 de noviembre de 2009, Wendy Dio, esposa y manager, anunci que habandiagnosticado a Ronnie cncer de estmago:

"Ronnie ha sido diagnosticado con las primeras etapas de cncer de estmago. Estamos

comenzando inmediatamente el tratamiento en la Clnica Mayo. Despus de que mate a

este dragn (en alusin a la cancin del artista), Ronnie estar de regreso en el

escenario, donde l pertenece, haciendo lo que ms le gusta: actuar para sus fans. Larga

vida al Rock and roll, larga vida a Ronnie James Dio. Gracias a todos los amigos y fansde todo el mundo que han enviado buenos deseos. Esto realmente le ha ayudado a

mantener su espritu para arriba".

El 14 de marzo de 2010, Wendy public una actualizacin en lnea de su condicin:

"Ha sido sptima quimioterapia de Ronnie, otro TAC y otra endoscopia, y los resultadosson buenos, el tumor principal se ha reducido considerablemente, y nuestras visitas a

Houston (clnica de cncer en Texas) son ahora cada tres semanas en vez de cada dos

semanas".

El 4 de mayo de 2010, los dems integrantes de Heaven & Hell anunciaron que estabancancelando todas las fechas de conciertos programados para el verano como

consecuencia de la mala salud de Dio.

El 14 de mayo Dio fue hospitalizado debido a que el dolor le resultaba insoportable. Al

da siguiente, segn escribi el bajista Geezer Butler en su pgina oficial, no haba duda

de que el final era inminente. Haba entre 25 y 30 de los amigos ms cercanos de Dio

esperando fuera de su habitacin para darle su ltimo adis. Por la tarde lleg un

capelln, y todos se reunieron alrededor de la cama de Dio para orar. Ms tarde esa

noche casi todos se fueron, dejndo a Wendy privacidad para decirle su ltimo adis.

La muerte de Dio se produjo el 16 de mayo de 2010 a las 7:45 am (CDT), segn fuentes

oficiales.

Wendy dej un mensaje en el sitio oficial de Dio:Hoy mi corazn est roto. Ronnie falleci el 16 de mayo a las 7:45 AM. Muchos

amigos y familiares pudieron darle su adis en privado antes de que nos abandonarapacficamente. Ronnie saba lo mucho que todos le queramos, por ello valoramos el

amor y apoyo que nos habis dado. Por favor ddnos unos das para asimilar esta

terrible prdida. Sabis que l os quera a todos y que su msica vivir siempre.

Al da siguiente Tony Iommi, el guitarrista y compaero de Dio en Heaven and Hell,

escribi en su pgina oficial:

"El hombre con la voz mgica es una estrella entre las estrellas, un verdadero

profesional. Te extraar muchsimo mi querido amigo. DEP."

Su muerte cay como un balde de agua fra en el mundo del heavy metal, tanto que losdas siguientes a la muerte de Dio se desat en Internet una avalancha de mensajes de

condolencias de los fans a travs de las redes sociales. Por su parte, muchos artistas dela escena metalera mundial se pronunciaron lamentando la muerte de Dio. Lars Ulrich,

batera de Metallica, le escribi una carta en la que confesaba cun importante ydecisiva result en su carrera musical la influencia de Dio: "Ronnie, tu voz me impact

y me di fuerzas, tu msica me inspir y me influenci, y tu amabilidad me toc y me

conmovi. Gracias".

Iron Maiden se pronunci escribiendo en su web oficial: "El mundo ha perdido a untalento irremplazable y, en primer lugar y ms importante, a uno de los mejores seres

humanos que tu desearas conocer".
