A Message From Fr. Len

On the Feast of the Holy Trinity I gave you the Blessing In the Name of the Father and of The Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. I am sure for all this time of uncertainties and worries about the Pandemic, the sign of the Cross which marks our faith in the Blessed Trinity gave us much comfort and peace. I continue to pray for all of you every day especially in my Daily Private Mass intentions. A lot of people have been asking when will the church will be open for public Masses. I look forward for that day as all of us have been longing for it. We surely appreciate more of the value of going to church to pray after the lock down and closures. But, in like manner I ask for your patience. It will not be easy in a snap of a finger that we just go back to what we normally did before. There will be lots of precautions and preparations to do for the sake of safety and well being of everybody. Staying home indeed lessened the spread of the Covid19 virus, but it is still lurking out there and waiting for more chances to contaminate, especially so when people congregate together. Hopefully in the coming weeks as the phases of lock down will ease down, we will surely devise some plans that will work best for our St. Mark parish. For now, we will continue to live stream our Sunday Masses through Facebook and You Tube live. I thank you for your understanding and endless support for St. Mark Parish and still encourage you to continue to mail our church envelopes and do the online giving. God bless you and your family. Keep safe and I look forward to seeing you in the pews of the church when our regular Mass will resume. Fr. Len

FAITH FORMATION

Our prayers continue for all of our families, and we ask the Lord to be with them during this time especially. As I have reached out to all of the families in Faith Formation, I have been deeply touched by their responses and their longing to once again be gathered around the table of the Lord. So many have expressed how they miss their parish family. We certainly look forward to being with them once again as our parish opens up with, of course, following all government and diocesan directives. Our concern for everyone’s continued good health and safety remains. All are especially grateful for our livestream Masses on Saturday at 5 p.m. with Father Tom and the Logan family, and on Sunday at 9:30 with Father Len and the Searing family and were happy to be notified that these were taking place. Each Faith Formation family received several updates with parish and diocesan news, comforting prayers, re-sources and specific lesson plans for each level so that the families could continue their children’s Faith For-mation at home. The candidates for both First Communion and Confirmation were given links to videos which they were watching in class about Eucharist and Confirmation, so that they could be better prepared for these next steps in their faith journeys. This began when we had to discontinue classes at the parish center in March and has been ongoing. As we are informed about when we can celebrate the sacraments and continue our plans for next year, the children and teens will meet virtually for formation particular to each sacrament. All of our dedicated Catechists for the children and teens, as well as our Youth Ministry Leaders, have also received messages with not just information, but also messages of hope and affirmation. Plans are underway to also meet with these dedicated volunteers as we continue our outreach to our parish family.

Everyone in our parish always looked forward to the children receiving their First Eucharist, but sadly we were not able to celebrate with the families over the first two weekends of May as we usually do. The parents have expressed their understanding, and know that they can look forward to when we can schedule the children’s first reception of the sacrament. In the meantime, to show the families how much we are thinking of them and praying for them, Father Len scheduled a special blessing for the children and their families on Sunday May 31 at 2 p.m. The families drove past Father Len and Father Tom by the circle in front of the church. Father held up the monstrance with the consecrated host to provide the blessing and Father Tom sprinkled holy water on the families as they drove by. We had a wonderful turnout, and were so very happy to see the children. Our thanks also are extended to Catechists Denise and Gina Mingoia, Tania Parrinello, Kellie Conlon and Gretchen Alessi for their presence and assistance. We are so very grateful to Father Len for offering this special time for the children and their families, and we ask for everyone’s continued prayers for them. Our teens have also been preparing to receive the sacrament of Confirmation in the fall. We also do not know of any definite date yet, but will certainly keep everyone abreast as updates are provided by the diocese and plans can be made. I am sure all will also continue to pray for our candidates, especially as we recently cele-brated Pentecost Sunday and the coming of the Holy Spirit. As we gradually reopen, Baptisms are also being rescheduled adhering to the guidelines for how many people can be present. I have remained in touch with all of the families whose children were to be baptized, and they are looking forward to celebrating their child’s entry into the church, and becoming a child of God through the sacrament. I was so happy when Father Len told me we could begin to plan for these very happy moments in families’ lives. Since we are continuing to work from home for now, I am always happy to hear from anyone through e-mail at [email protected] or my cell phone 631 875-4150 with any questions, concerns or just to let us know how you are doing. May our faith and trust in the Lord continue to guide us during this challenging time. In the peace of Christ,

Letter to the Catholic Faithful of the Diocese of Rockville Centre

From Bishop John O. Barres Seventh Sunday of Easter, May 24, 2020

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: In Saint John’s Gospel this weekend, the Seventh Sunday of Easter, we proclaim that “Jesus raised his eyes to heaven and said, ‘Father, the hour has come. Give glory to your son, so that your son may glorify you...’.” In reflecting on this passage, I immediately began to think about our priests in the Diocese of Rockville Centre, who glorify the Father by serving the faithful daily. These are enormously trying times for all of us, but our priests and pastors have risen to the occasion in so many creative ways. They serve the people of God through on-line Masses, blessing homes in their parishes, curbside adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, and much more. I am so grateful to each and every one of our priests who are working tirelessly to serve the people in their parishes while they are helping grieving families and tending to the sick. However, as they are doing all of this, we are not able to gather our congregations on weekends and therefore, are not receiving the offertory collections that are so very important to the financial health of our parishes. Appreciating the anxieties you are facing, we urge you to please continue supporting your parish with weekly of-fertory donations. These funds are critical for the continued operation of your parish. Every day, your parish pro-vides for the pastoral and spiritual care of its parishioners. It is there in the happiest moments in your life - wed-dings, baptisms, first Communions - and is a source of comfort during the most challenging times such as our cur-rent crisis or the death of a loved one. There are senior services, food pantries, youth ministries, schools, and on-going religious education. All of this depends on you! We must also prepare to fully reemerge when the crisis is over and we are able to join together again as the Body of Christ. We ask that you please consider making the sac-rifice, at a minimum, to continue your current weekly level of support. One easy way to do so is through your parish's online giving provider. Your parish may have an online giving ac-count that can be accessed through the parish website. We have also developed a “Text to Give” option for each of our parishes enabling you to make a weekly donation on your smart phone. To access information regarding this innovative form of giving, please go to the following website https://www.drvcmissionarygrowth.org/text2give. I know that the faithful on Long Island understand this and will and respond as you always do in times of crisis. Please know that you and your family are remembered in my daily prayers and Masses.

Sincerely in Christ,

Most Reverend John O. Barres Bishop of Rockville Centre

Letter to the Catholic Faithful of the Diocese of Rockville Centre From Bishop John O. Barres

Sixth Sunday of Easter, May 17, 2020 Celebration of a Special White Mass for Healthcare Workers

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: On this Sixth Sunday of Easter, St. Peter proclaims in his first letter (3: 15-18): “Sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts. Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope, but do it with gentleness and reverence…” This Sunday at St. Agnes Cathedral, we celebrate a special White Mass (named for the white uniforms often worn by doctors and nurses) and we pray for all healthcare workers on Long Island. Every day, they exude hope as they imitate the healing compassion of Jesus Christ. Over the last few months, Catholic Health Services (CHS) of Long Island has mobilized at every level to re-spond to this unprecedented health crisis and meet the needs of our community. These are only a few examples of what CHS has been providing: • Since March 1, 2020, over 13,000 individuals have been seen at CHS hospitals for suspected and confirmed cases of coronavirus. Of those, approximately 9,200 patients were successfully discharged and sent home to recuperate and nearly 4,000 were admitted to be cared for by our frontline healthcare professionals. • Two of our hospitals – Good Samaritan Medical Center and St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Center – were designated by New York State as COVID-19 hotspots. Together, the two hospitals have cared for nearly 2,000 COVID+ inpatients since the crisis began. • As patient cases rose, so did the need to increase staffing levels to ensure that all patients –especially the very sickest – would have the best around-the-clock care available. We could not have met this challenge head-on without the courage and steadfast dedication of our Catholic Health Services frontline healthcare professionals. There are so many individuals whose physical and emotional efforts have been the deciding factor in our fight against COVID-19. From the housekeeping and environmental safety staff who diligently maintained the high-est standards of sanitizing and rigorous protection against the spread of the virus in our facilities; to the nurses and physician assistants who not only provided world-class bedside care but oftentimes were called to act as family intermediaries and proxies for patients in COVID-19 isolation units; to the physicians and clinical re-searchers who directed the clinical care plans and have begun to launch and lead clinical trials to identify pos-sible therapies for the virus; and the home healthcare professionals, hospice care workers and grief counselors who even now are working tirelessly to ease the pain and suffering of community during this time of crisis. With enormous pride in the outstanding work of our Catholic Health Services system, I extend my personal thanks – and that of everyone in the Diocese – to the extraordinary women and men who have sacrificed so much to ensure the health and security of so many. We owe them our deepest gratitude and admiration. (continued…)

Although the initial surge of COVID-19 cases seems to be behind us, there is still a tremendous amount of work to be done to prepare our Catholic Health Services of Long Island system to weather the months ahead. You can play a role in these preparations by making a gift to one of our frontline hospitals or healthcare ser-vice providers. For those who may wish to assist the coming effort by making a gift of financial support, please visit www.chsli.org/ways-to-give where you can choose to allocate your gift to any of our hospitals or patient care units. The occasion of this year’s White Mass has special significance for the entire Catholic community of Long Island, as we have all been touched in many ways by the global pandemic. If you are able, please consider add-ing your support to aid the remarkable work of our Catholic Health Services staff. Please know that you and your family are remembered in my daily prayers and Masses.

Sincerely in Christ,

Most Reverend John O. Barres Bishop of Rockville Centre

Pulpit Message for the Sixth Sunday of Easter

On this Sixth Sunday of Easter, we continue to pray for all those who are carrying crosses and burdens, as well as for all who continue to fight this pan-demic on the frontline, our nurses, doctors and all healthcare workers on Long Island. As we continue to endure the challenges of COVID-19, we thank you for your continued support of your parish and all the hospitals, nursing homes, and other services offered by our own Catholic Health Services. They could not have met this challenge head-on without the courage and steadfast dedica-tion of our Catholic Health Services frontline health-care professionals. Everyone in our Diocese should take enormous pride in the outstanding work of our Catholic Health Services system. We owe our deepest gratitude and admiration to these extraordinary women and men who have sacrificed so much to ensure the health and security of so many. You can help support the work of our Catholic Health Services by keeping all of these healthcare workers in your prayers, and if you are able, by making a gift of financial support, by visiting www.chsli.org/ways-to-give where you can choose to allocate your gift to any of our hospitals or patient care units. If you are able, please consider adding your support to aid the remarkable work of our Catholic Health Services staff. We also ask that you continue to pray for those who are sick or who have lost a loved one, as well as for all of the heroic people serving on the front lines of this crisis. May God bless us as we help one another to carry this Cross.

Pulpit Message for the Seventh Sunday of Easter

On this Seventh Sunday of Easter, we continue to pray for all those who are deeply affected by this Pandemic, as well as for all who continue to serve on the frontline; our nurses, doctors and all health-care workers on Long Island. As we continue to endure the challenges of COVID-19, we thank you for your continued support of your parish and all the ministries of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. We know that the current crisis has impacted families, businesses and institutions financially and emotionally. Our par-ishes and the diocese are working continuously to support the faithful through televised and online Masses, parish food pantries and meal programs, healthcare services, and online learning for our school children. Appreciating the anxieties you are facing, we urge you to please continue supporting your parish with weekly offertory donations. These funds are critical for the continued operation of your parish. We must prepare to fully reemerge when the crisis is over and we are able to join together again as the Body of Christ. Just a Prayer

Lord, we ask you to bless all the Moms and Dads who are home with their children now as we are basically “sheltered in place”. Not only are they keeping up with their children’s schoolwork—and keeping them entertained and happy— but they also have to keep up with their own careers. Jesus, you will never allow anything to happen without bringing some good out of the situation. Help us to see You in all of us. Please open our minds and hearts to the miracles You can do in troubling times.

Heloooo, “Cut-ups”! (And Super Sewers!)

We are on hold for a while, but we will resume our “Cut-up” activities as soon as we get through this difficult time. In the meantime, please pray for our little friends in Haiti, as well as all those around the world who are affected by this health crisis. We will get through this, and Jesus will make us stronger than ever!

At the time of this press release, pursuant to New York State Executive Order, religious gatherings of more than ten people is prohibited. As of the date of this release (May 29), this ordination will, unfortunately, not be open to the public. For the safety of all, only a limited number of individuals deemed integral to the celebration of the Ordination Mass will be permitted inside the Cathedral. If a subsequent Executive Order affecting public gatherings for religious services is enacted that impacts the celebration of this Mass, the Diocese will issue an updated statement. Please visit www.drvc.org and Diocese of Rockville Centre social media (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram) for updates.

Those being ordained are the Rev. Mr. Rafal Borowiejski and the Rev. Mr. John Crozier. The newly ordained priests will be assigned to parishes in the Diocese of Rockville Centre where they will both serve in the role of associate pastor.
