PARISH INFORMATION Tenth Sunday In Ordinary Time Half the liturgical year 2016 is completed after six months of extraordinary celebrations. The Incarnation mystery: Jesus’ advent, nativity, epiphany. The Paschal mystery: Jesus’ passion, death, resurrection, Pentecost’s Holy Spirit. The solemnities of Holy Trinity and Jesus’ Body and Blood. Today the Church resumes Sundays in Ordinary Time, but with a Gospel of extraordinary mercy: Jesus raises a dead man to life. Yet the one who benefits most from his extraordinary mercy is not the dead son but his widowed mother. With her husband and only son deceased, this woman’s material support, in that patriarchal society, had vanished. So had her emotional support, leaving her helpless, abandoned, on society’s “peripheries.” One of Pope Francis’ hopes in calling this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy is to transform us into more extraordinary Christians, by making our caring outreach to just such vulnerable people, and our practical self-sacrificing love for them, our ordinary, daily, Christian way of life! —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading - Elijah revives the son of a

widow (1 Kings 17:17-24). Psalm - I will praise you, Lord, for you have

rescued me (Psalm 30). Second Reading - Paul explains God’s call to

him to preach to the Gentiles (Galatians 1:11-19).

Gospel - Jesus raises from the dead the son of a widow in the city of Nain (Luke 7:11-17).

. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. Get On The Bus - Father’s Day “Uniting children with their mothers and fathers in prison”

Dear St. Dominic Savio Parish community, On Saturday, May 14th, it was our parish “Get On The Bus” Father’s Day event trip and the destination was CMC (California Men's Colony) State Prison. It was a wonderful experience and joy filled trip for the children and their families. It started with the gathering of the families in our church hall at 3:00 a.m. After all paperwork and dress policies were confirmed, and at 4:00 a.m., the families were presented with a light meal bag prepared and provided by our St. Dominic Savio, Grupo De Oración, as the families boarded the bus. The bus headed off and made a stop in Los Angeles (at St. Vincent de Paul Church) to pick up additional families, which were also presented with a light meal bag. At 5:00 a.m. our bus rolled out and we started our trip to CMC at San Luis Obispo. The bus made a quick stop at a McDonald’s in Santa Barbara to picked up breakfast meals for all the travelers on board, thanks to the generosity of our St. Dominic Savio School Principal; Sr. Marie and all her students for contributing funds to purchase all the breakfast meals. A total of 9 buses participated, coming from different parts of the state to CMC. By 10 a.m., all the children were processed and inside the prison, reunited with their incarcerated dads. Words cannot give justice to the excitement, joy and love that filled the meeting room. Sergio, one of the residents working the event (not with family) said, “On regular visits, very few children come, it is mostly couples.” Sergio was happy to see so many children there and he shared that the noise level was also higher than normal due to the joy of children’s voices. At the end of the visit and as each bus number was called to leave, the joyful noises lessened and sad goodbyes were now obvious around the room. However, this was a very short time in respect to the length of their visit, which was about 4 hours. All the families and the residents visited were VERY grateful for the opportunity that Get On The Bus, its donors and the volunteers provided them, to make this “Father's Day” event possible. As the buses departed CMC, each went to a nearby location where the children were received with a small reception. Our reception was at a Jewish Temple hall, where there was an ice cream sundae bar with their volunteers serving the families. Each child also received a framed printed picture taken of their families during their visit inside CMC. After about an hour in the reception and when it was time to leave, the families were presented with a “travel home” bag that included a meal for the way home (deli made sandwiches, chips, one fruit & a cookie), and supplies for the children to stay connected with their dad. On the road home and while the bus was rolling, each child’s name was called out and was called to the front of the bus and presented with a love letter from their dad, along with a teddy bear. Hours later, stops in L.A. and Bellflower were made to drop-off the respective families. The children and their family now tired from a very long day and loaded with gifts, were very appreciative to all that helped make their day memorable. The St. Dominic Savio, Get On The Bus Committee, can’t thank you (the parish community) enough, for your generous contributions to help so many children, see, touch and hug their dad in prison - one set of siblings (20 & 17 years of age), had not visited their father, in 15 years!!! Our St. Dominic Savio trip volunteers got home very tired from a very long day but they knew it was worth every minute, and grateful to be part of the children’s lifetime memories. Humbly and lovingly serving the Lord, The St. Dominic Savio, Get On The Bus Committee

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Unless Professor Einstein’s theory of relativity can be translated into any useful kind of time-travel, most of our clues about life in the early church will have to come from ancient letters and ancient prayer texts. A prayer text from a dusty library may yield, for example, an understanding of what “presbyters” actually did. We have such a prayer from the early third century from the hand of Hippolytus of Rome. While our modern prayers derive a great deal from his, some of the practices of the ancient church have fallen away. In his day, bishops were chosen by the people, and the other bishops merely consented. Presbyters, by contrast, seem to have been chosen by the bishops. This makes sense, since it allowed the bishops to hand-pick their most trusted advisers. It seems that bishops were at first reluctant to share their presiding at the Eucharist with presbyters. In fact, by the time of the fourth-century church’s growth spurt in Rome, the bishop sent deacons out with fragments of the host from his Eucharist to drop into the chalices of the presbyters at the outlying eucharistic celebrations. We still have a vestige of this fermentum in the Mass today, a reminder of the early bishops’ desire to give a powerful sign of the unity of all celebrations of the Eucharist with their ministry, and a clue to their reluctance to delegate a sacramental ministry to the presbyters. —Rev.

Domingo Savio

Did You Know? Praise is just as important as providing food and shelter for a child. Praise is an important aspect of raising a confident child. When you praise a child, not only do you raise their self-esteem and self-concept but you increase their overall self-worth. One thing you can do is focus on the child and describe what you see. For example, you can say: “You are so pa ent. That means a lot to your li le brother.” For more ps on praising children please email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227.
