Gospel Reading - Matthew 5:17–37 I have not come to abolish the law and the prophets but to fulfill them.
Matthew continues the Sermon on the Mount with a three part instruction by Jesus on the Way of Life in the kingdom of heaven. Today’s reading is part one and deals with the Law. Part two deals with worship and religious practice and contains the Lord’s Prayer. Part three deals with trusting God and deeds of loving service to our neighbor.
When Matthew speaks of “the Law and the prophets” he means the whole Scripture. When the Messiah brings the fullness of the kingdom none of scripture will be done away with. Instead it will be fulfilled. Matthew’s Jesus does not overturn the Law of Moses, nor does he set his followers free from the Law. He requires his followers to go beyond the Law by doing more than the Law requires.
The Law condemned murder. Jesus condemns anger. The Law condemned adultery. Jesus condemns even lustful looks. As Jewish Christians who had always been faithful to the Law Matthew’s community need a way to understand the difference Jesus and the kingdom he brings have made. They affirmed that God had always been at work in history through “the Law and the prophets.” But God’s work goes beyond that to be embodied by the Messiah who reveals the definitive will of God. The written scriptures and their interpretation in tradition are surpassed by Jesus whose life and teaching are the definitive revelation of the will of God.

Living the 3 T’s By sharing your Time, Talent, & Treasure
“…my spirit rejoices in God my Savior” (Lk 1:47)
As Our Lady’s heart rejoiced in God her Savior, her joy motivated her to minister to her cousin Elizabeth, to intercede for newlyweds, to stand beneath her Son’s Cross, and to fortify the prayers of the Apostles. Today, Our Lady advocates for physical and spiritual healings for her children who travel to churches dedicated to her intercession… In whom or in what does our heart rejoice as we spend our time, talent, and treasure? Are we like or unlike Our Lady? Let’s ask Our Lady to help us be more like her, heart rejoicing in the Lord, brimming over in loving care and service to others.
Welcome!!!

St. Thomas the Apostle Prayer Shawl Ministry
Our gatherings will be in the St. Peter room 11:30AM – 1:30 PM February 16th, March 15th, April 19th, May 17th and June 21st
Fellow parishioners did you know the Prayer Shawl Ministry provides handmade baby blankets to each baby baptized here at church? We also provide handmade prayer shawls, lap robes and prayer squares to comfort those in need. In the past we have helped hospice and other groups when in need as well as our churches giving tree.
We want you to know you could ask for a lap robe or shawl from our ministry for a family member or friend who is sick or shut in with limited activity or just going through a difficult time. When we give a shawl or lap robe our mission is to provide you with prayer, warmth and comfort, to share your pain, your sorrow and to remind you that you are never alone and you are wrapped in God’s love.
Our Ministry is in need of new members who knit or crochet and would like to share their talent with our ministry. All are welcome to join our gathering of fellowship on the 3rd Sunday of each month in the St. Peters room from 11:30am to1:30pm. The meetings give our members a chance to pray and work together as a group as well as exchange patterns and new ideas to enhance our ability to comfort others in need. You can knit or crochet at home or with our group. You do not have to attend meetings to be an active member to share your talent with our ministry.
For more information on our ministry please call Betsy@ 973 893-2441 Let us continue to pray for those making shawls and those who receive them. Donations of yarn or gift cards to Michaels are always welcomed and appreciated to continue with our shawls, lap robes and baby blankets.
