Suggested Use

There’s really no wrong way to use The Little Things and Such and its contents of motiva-tional poems and refl ections questions. Though, for individuals, friendships, couples, small groups, or classrooms, for example, we offer the following suggested use:

Begin this journey of self-discovery in a very relaxed state of mind. Set aside any thoughts of the past or the future and focus your attention only on the here and now. Make your-self comfortable and have a pen handy for writing down your thoughts and feelings while considering the refl ection questions.

Step One:

Take a moment to read one of motivational poems or life quotes. In fact, we suggest that you read it multiple times. The poems and life quotes are in no particular order. As you’re reading, try to internalize its meaning and allow yourself to get emotional involved in what the Author is conveying.

Step Two:

Then, turn your attention over to the refl ection questions on the oppo-site page of the poem or life quote. Answer one question at a time in any order that you choose. Pay close attention to how you feel. If a ques-tion happens to elicit a negative re-sponse, stick with that question until you are able to fi nd the good and write something positive.

Suggested UseIn the last few pages of The Little Things and Such we are giving you the opportunity to write your own poem or life quote and refl ection questions. What inspirational message do you have to share with the world?

xii

First, write down your poem or quote in the space provided. Then write down fi ve refl ection questions that will help readers extract the essence of your work.

Then upon graduating from Bryn Mawr College, she took a teaching position, tutored, wrote more magazine articles, and earned a library science degree. Her subsequent marriage to Morgan Vining, a University of North Carolina professor, ended abruptly when he died in a car accident.

After returning home to reside in Philadelphia with her family, Gray Vining continued thinking about writing. A trip to Scotland provided the information she needed for a biography of Walter Scott. From her various travels, more biographies and novels followed. Gray Vining’s attention to detail and her in-depth research which brought her characters and their stories to life garnered her much respect. She earned the Newbery Medal for Adam of the Road in 1943.

Gray Vining chose to become a Quaker and spent much time in service to her religion. Later, through her Quaker connections, Gray Vining was invited to tutor the Crown Prince of Japan from 1946-1950. She wrote a book for adults recounting her experiences Windows for the Crown Prince. Gray Vining’s writing career stretched over 60 years and thirty books, including biographies, novels, story collections, and children’s fi ction. Gray Vining passed away in 1999 in Pennsylvania.

I Am the Master of My Life (Page 22) - E’mile Coue’ (1859 - 1926) a French psychologist and pharmacist, author of “Self Mastery through Conscious Autosuggestion” is known as the “Prophet of Autosuggestion.” While working as a pharmacist he realized that when he praised a patient’s medicine there was a noticeable improvement on the action of these medications, and by saying nothing about the medication created no effect.

Coue’ believed in the mental effects to amplify medication and health. One of the main underlying principles of his beliefs and of his method of conscious autosuggestion is that any idea exclusively occupying the mind turns into reality.

Coue’ believed that our unconscious mind is the source of many illnesses, and that the unconscious mind can also serve as the cure. His teachings are based on the premise there is a powerful force within ourselves which can produce best or worst results. This force is the enormous power of imagination.

At the very young age of two, the child who was named Lhamo Dhondup at that time, was recognized as the reincarnation of the previous 13th Dalai Lama, Thubten Gyatso.

The Dalai Lamas are believed to be manifestations of Avalokiteshvara or Chenrezig, the Bodhisattva of Compassion and the patron saint of Tibet. Bodhisattvas are believed to be enlightened beings who have postponed their own nirvana and chosen to take rebirth in order to serve humanity.

Everything is Energy (Page 28) - Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955) was a German-born theoretical physicist and philosopher of science. He developed the general theory of relativity, one of the two pillars of modern physics. He is best known in popular culture for his mass–energy equivalence formula E = mc2 (which has been dubbed “the world’s most famous equation”). He received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for his “services to theoretical physics”, in particular his discovery of the photoelectric effect, a pivotal step in the evolution of quantum theory.

He was visiting the United States when Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933 and, being Jewish, did not go back to Germany, where he had been a professor at the Berlin Academy of Sciences. He settled in the U.S., becoming an American citizen in 1940. Einstein published more than 300 scientifi c papers along with over 150 non-scientifi c works. Einstein’s intellectual achievements and originality have made the word “Einstein” synonymous with genius.

The Optimist Creed was authored in 1912 by Larson, appearing in his book Your Forces and How to Use Them. It was adopted as Optimist International’s creed in 1922. In fact, he coined the term Weltliteratur and spoke Greek, Latin, French, English, and Italian. Aside from its quality, the sheer volume of work during his 82-year lifetime is impressive. Among other works, Goethe wrote a worldwide, best-selling novel (Die Leiden des Jungen Werthers, 1774), volumes of poetry, and several dramas, including his masterwork: Faust — a massive two-volume drama that was not entirely fi nished by the time of the poet’s death. Goethe also dabbled in painting and science (Farbenlehre/“Theory of Color”), although his greatest achievements by far were in literature.

The Greatest Discovery (Page 80) - William James (1842 - 1910) was an American philosopher and psychologist who was also trained as a physician. The fi rst educator to offer a psychology course in the United States, James was one of the leading thinkers of the late nineteenth century and is believed by many to be one of the most infl uential philosophers the United States has ever produced, while others have labelled him the “Father of American psychology”. Along with Charles Sanders Peirce and John Dewey, he is considered to be one of the major fi gures associated with the philosophical school known as pragmatism, and is also cited as one of the founders of functional psychology. He also developed the philosophical perspective known as radical empiricism.

Self Confi dence Formula (Page 82) - Napoleon Hill (1883 - 1970) was an American author in the area of the new thought movement who was one of the earliest producers of the modern genre of personal-success literature. He is widely considered to be one of the great writers on success. His most famous work, Think and Grow Rich (1937), is one of the best-selling books of all time (at the time of Hill’s death in 1970, Think and Grow Rich had sold 20 million copies). Hill’s works examined the power of personal beliefs, and the role they play in personal success. He became an advisor to President Franklin D. Roosevelt from 1933 to 1936. “Anything the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can be achieved,” is one of Hill’s hallmark expressions.

Born in Hamburg, Germany, he was ordained a Presbyterian minister soon after his arrival in the United States as a young adult. He quickly gained attention as an eloquent motivational speaker.

Rev. Boetcker is perhaps best remembered for his authorship of a pamphlet entitled The Ten Cannots that emphasizes freedom and responsibility of the individual on himself. Originally published in 1916, it is often misattributed to Abraham Lincoln. The error apparently stems from a leafl et printed in 1942 by a conservative political organization called the Committee for Constitutional Government. The leafl et bore the title “Lincoln on Limitations” and contained some genuine Lincoln quotations on one side and the “Ten Cannots” on the other, with the attributions switched.
