This year we are celebrating the first six years of the Mexican edition of the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year™ award program. Each year a new group of entrepreneurs inspires us to believe in a more prosperous future and reminds us that this prosperous future will depend on the tenacity of men and women who dare to think and to do things differently.

The role of entrepreneurs is critical to achieving a better society. We know that today’s entrepreneurs are building our legacy and we share their enthusiasm for building a better working world that is reshaping the outlook for Mexico.

In this magazine, we share the stories of how these entrepreneurs have achieved their success, and we describe how their leadership inspires others to follow in their footsteps, and how EY’s initiatives foster collaboration among all players in the business ecosystem to empower the full realization of the entrepreneurial spirit.

We know that the success of any new business benefits both the economy and society at large. We have seen firsthand how encouraging entrepreneurship brings positive results that translate into new collaborative networks and connections between business people, and this has inspired us to develop initiatives aimed at enhancing the entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Strategic alliancesIMEF Entrepreneurship Committee As part of a wider aim to promote collaboration among the principal agents for change in Mexico’s entrepreneurial environment, EY and the Mexican Institute of Finance Executives (IMEF, Spanish acronym) have joined forces on various initiatives, such as networking meetings, presentations of new business models and success stories. like you - men and women who create thousands of jobs, who lead companies reporting growth in excess of 30%, that do what it takes to institutionalize their family businesses, that face risk, and that are able to secure venture capital and private equity funding.

The judges of EOY 2015 Mexico know full well that for many of you being an entrepreneur is not just a job, but it is your life’s work and what keeps you striving to realize your full potential. I would like to thank you all for enlightening us, inspiring us, and teaching us many great life lessons.Lastly, I’d like to highlight the four pillars of the EOY program: Vision, leadership, execution and accountability, which are all essential for entrepreneurial success.”. n

The entrepreneurial

adventure

To be an entrepreneur is to face and overcome challenges and to set off

on a thrilling adventure that not only demands commitment from those who

dare, but energy and attitude as well.

“Congratulations to this year’s 30 finalists, who through their work with their companies have inspired us with their talent for innovation and their ability to dream big and to turn these dreams into reality every day in their businesses.

The growth of a country and of a society relies on the work of entrepreneurs. No society can truly claim to be prosperous without the growth of its businesses. It’s amazing to see businesspeople

The gala dinners where we celebrate entrepreneurs who have built their legacy on strength and passion are always inspiring. Knowing that there are Mexicans who are doing their part to make the country better motivates us to

continue praising the work of these leaders and to encourage others to follow in their footsteps.

Gala dinner highlights

Leadership that inspires

“As a society we need more leaders that are willing and able to transform our world. Listening to their stories and hearing about their business models gives us clear evidence of what they do to create jobs, encourage innovation in their industries, face risk with audacity, and showcase the ability and talent of the people right here in Mexico.”

Francisco Álvarez, President and General director of EY México and Central America.

“We would all like to live in a Mexico that fosters a culture of entrepreneurship and which offers the possibility ofprosperity through that road to success.Entrepreneurs are examples for all of us to follow and that is why they have an enormous obligation to their companies, because that is where they turned their dreams into reality, to their families, who supported them throughout the road to success, and most notably, to other entrepreneurs, who see themselves in those leaders.”

Enrique Jacob Rocha, Presidente del INADEM.

Facing the challengeRodrigo Lebois, President of Unifin Financiera, founded his company 22 years ago with no outside financial help. The business took off quickly and in the beginning it was focused primarily on financial leasing: “February 1993 for us was five employees and lots of hard work. The first 18 months were a dream. The country was doing well, inflation was down, and interest rates were relatively constant.” But the first big test for Unifin came just one year later with the financial crisis of 1994 and the resulting increase in interest rates. “After that first January, Unifin was beyond broke. Almost every kind of business was in decline, and despite facing so many problems, we stuck it out through five or six years of negotiations. Our business survived on bank loans, all of which ended up being cancelled.”

“What makes us great and better businesspeople is the sum of our talent.”

Rodrigo’s close relationship with various companies in the automotive sector was the key to the company’s survival, and Unifin has gone on to become the largest leasing company in Latin America. Today Unifin operates through four business units: operating leases, factoring, auto loans and insurance.

Going public: a decisive actionUnifin achieved its growth thanks to its gradual institutionalization spurned on by its entrance into the public securities markets. The company issued its first debt in 2001: “Since 2002, the company has been taking off. We have grown by 340 times. I’m very proud of what we have achieved,” Rodrigo said.

Page 29: Rodrigo Lebois MateosEY Strategic Growth Forum® Mexico 2015 Knowledge for driving growth EY Strategic Growth Forum® Mexico 2015 92 speakers More than attendees keynote conferences

27Emprendedor 2015 |

In 2006, Unifin Financiera became the first Multiple Purpose Financial Institution (SOFOM) in Mexico to securitize its accounts receivable portfolio, and it was recognized for this groundbreaking action by the Mexican Stock Exchange and the Mexican Banking and Securities Commission.

“We issued our first debt in 2002 when we issued a global bond and executed Mexico’s first securitization of a leasing portfolio. These events have set us apart and have demonstrated that we are market leaders,” Rodrigo commented.

Unifin has maintained a past-due portfolio of less than 1% and its credit ratings issued by Standard & Poor’s, Fitch Ratings and HR Ratings all attest to the company’s financial solidity.

Talent, innovation and love for Mexico Rodrigo Lebois believes that success in business is closely tied to building great work teams: “We develop young talent and bring in people with more experience and both of these approaches have helped us, since these individuals bring experience and hard work and drive to our organization.”Rodrigo also encouraged entrepreneurial leaders to not be afraid to hire people with more talent than themselves: “Train your people. There is nothing better than having people around who are smarter than you to come up with ideas and help you along the road to success.”

Unifin currently has more than 300 employees and more than 3,000 customers who receive Unifin’s innovation-based services: “We need to stay at the forefront of processes and do what it takes to identify the needs of our customers,” he stressed.

After receiving his award as the EOY 2015 National Winner, Rodrigo spoke about how entrepreneurs are committed to contributing to Mexico’s economic and social growth: “Most companies out there do big things for Mexico. We are all working together to build a better country. We believe in Mexico and we put it all on the line for our country.” ■

Unifin and Formula 1In 2014, Unifin became a sponsor of the Sauber Formula 1 racing team, and this year it sponsored the Lotus F1 team in the return of the Grand Prix to Mexico: “Formula 1 teaches companies that success isn’t the result of just the car, the driver, the track, the tires or the engine. Success is the sum of all those moving parts, which have to be perfectly coordinated in order to reach the finish line. Unifin can be great and can triumph only if everyone does their job and does it well.”n

his career at the age of 16 when he started working at his father’s business: “I was born in the tire business. My dad had a tire shop and he would take me to work with him and I went to the tire shop after school too. My father taught us all about running a family business.”

Looking back on how he got his start, Gonzalo says that he did once think about getting out of the tire business: “I didn’t like selling tires because it wasn’t a very professional or entrepreneurial kind of business. I would spend a lot time with a customer and only sell him or her four tires. I would sell up to 50 tires a day but I wanted something bigger and with more potential,” he said.

Thinking big was the first step to realizing this dream. At 23, Gonzalo redesigned the company’s business model under the new commercial name Tire Direct and with a new focus on wholesale trade. This new focus required trips to Los Angeles to import the first container of tires and start on the institutionalization phase of the family business: “We invested money in this project. We bought a container of tires and importing it into Mexico took a long time, as we had to deal with permits, registrations, and compliance with the official Mexican standards. Fortunately for us my sister joined the company in the administrative area and she took care of everything.”

“We also made an ecological commitment.

We sought out tire recycling methods that

would reduce the impact of our business on the

ecosystem.”

Innovation and capacity for changeUntil 2009 Gonzalo was Tire Direct’s only salesperson and during this time he developed a distinctive image for himself in the market: “I always wore a black shirt because I didn’t want my prospective customers to see the dirt on my shirt, since tire salespeople almost always wear tire-stained white shirts. I would arrive to sales pitches in my immaculate pickup truck and with my dark “uniform” on and I would describe a very different business model to my potential customers.” The Tire Direct distribution network was born when potential wholesale customers began to contact suppliers directly, which forced Gonzalo to change his strategy once again: “I stored the product, I found out who the end customer was, and I developed new customers by selling to them directly.”Using this strategy, Tire Direct was able to make enough money to invest and ignite its growth. The company is still a family business, but one with a solid commercial and administrative structure: “Everyone understands the job they have to do. The organization’s hierarchy is respected by all and nobody makes unilateral decisions.”

With its capacity to evolve and adapt, Tire Direct is planning to firm up its growth by opening a Master Distribution Center to consolidate its seven current warehouses into just two facilitates: “This change will translate into lower costs, better logistics, more viable sustained growth and better customer service.n

“Technology is the key to innovation and business expansion, since is how we improve processes, offer better quality services, get closer to our customers, and find the help we need to make better decisions.”

“I’m an entrepreneur because of the opportunity it gives me to share each day with a team of people who are experts at what they do, learn from them and see them too achieve their professional dreams.”

IaIt was 18 years ago in Taxco, Guerrero that Daniel Espinosa Jewelry was born out of a love for Mexico and a passion for design. Today Daniel Espinosa Jewelry has helped take the Mexican jewelry industry into the

international big leagues, as it does business in 22 countries through more than 400 points of sale.

After receiving their award as the winners of the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year™ 2015 Mexico Expanding Business category, Daniel Espinosa and Máximo Sánchez emphasized their commitment to entrepreneurship: “Our first decision was to not give up. There are lots of people depending on us and we are committed to supporting the people of Taxco, Guerrero.” Daniel Espinosa Jewelry maintains exclusive workshops in Taxco, which employ 200 jewelry craftsmen and craftswomen.

Daniel believes that the success of his business model is due to three factors: “being a jewelry designer, being Mexican, and being able to draw from a rich well of technical and cultural experience, which have all lead us to our success both in Mexico and abroad,” he said.

Conquering the worldDaniel Espinosa Jewelry currently operates in wide range of countries, including Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, the United States and various regions of Europe, through direct sales, association and franchise business models.Continuing with the internationalization of Daniel Espinosa Jewelry is one of the company’s principal objectives:

Canada, Russia and Asia are the company’s next targets. When Daniel Espinosa Jewelry moves into a country, the company begins a process of analyzing local consumer tastes and preferences, and then sets out to build its reputation in the new market:

“My customers like wearing jewelry made by an internationally renowned Mexican brand of jewelry,” Daniel commented. Some of Daniel Espinosa’s more famous customers include Jennifer López, Madonna, Diane von Fürstenberg, and Gwyneth Paltrow.

The Mexican market is also a strategic one for Daniel Espinosa Jewelry because of the talent, creativity and close access to resources that Mexico offers. “Mexico doesn’t import many raw materials but our industry is fortunate enough to have all of the resources that we need right here at home,” Daniel said.

A milestone in the jewelry industryThrough Daniel Espinosa Jewelry, Daniel and Máximo have paved the way for a new generation of Mexican jewelers: “We want to teach young jewelry design students that they too can have a profitable jewelry business if they are constant in their efforts. Just a short time ago there were no jewelry designers in Mexico, and now there are 60 of us”, he said. Four years ago the company faced one of its biggest challenges due to a dramatic increase in the price of gold and silver: “We dealt with this by making the right adjustments to our designs to make sure that we maintained the visual attractiveness of our jewelry and the quality of each design, but with an eye towards maintaining our existing pricing.”

Design with a causeDaniel Espinosa Jewelry also contributes to a number of social causes. Each year since its founding, the company designs an exclusive piece and donates 50% of the sales of that piece to Fundación Cimab, an organization dedicated to finding a cure for breast cancer. The company also donates a percentage of its profits to various public institutions, such as the DIF, Cruz Roja and the CRIT in all of the states where Daniel Espinosa Jewelry has business.n

Adfrom the intense physical and emotional toll that chronic degenerative diseases take on those facing them, they also

have significant financial consequences and impact the family life of patients. Juana Ramírez, General Director of SOHIN, created this company six years ago to provide innovative concierge services to people battling long-term chronic diseases like cancer, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes.

“The goal of our business model is to help patients focus on their treatments, make better decisions about those treatments, and make best use of the resources available to them,” said Juana, winner of the EOY Mexico Under Development category. The services that SOHIN offers include handling administrative processes with insurance companies, scheduling appointments and hospital procedures, and overseeing prompt home delivery of medications, and homecare, nursing and rehabilitation services. SOHIN also provides nutritional and psychological support to both patients and their family members as well. “Sometimes our patients are even more appreciative of the support we provide to their children or spouses, since patients know that their loved ones also carry the burden of their illnesses,” Juana said.

Innovation in chronic disease treatment

SOHIN provides care to more than 3,000 patients, who are each assigned a personal guide to accompany them in person throughout each stage of their treatments, both at home and in the hospital. Guides also provide support over the phone. “An empowered and well-informed patient makes smart decisions, which allows them to make the best use of their resources”, Juana said.

The clinical information, diagnoses and interactions with each patient are stored in a technological platform that may be accessed to analyze and enhance patient processes, and to be able to provide services that are better adapted to the patient’s needs.

“I am convinced that good healthcare is critical for building a more productive country.”

“Chronic degenerative diseases represent an enormous challenge for both public and private healthcare systems. The World Health Organization estimates that one in every three Mexicans will be diagnosed with cancer at some time during his or her life.”

SOHIN is also the exclusive administrator in Mexico of Mammaprint, a breast cancer test certified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that is based on a 70-gene breast cancer gene signature developed to determine the likelihood of recurrence or metastasis of a given tumor, which affects the type of treatment eventually selected. “There are patients who have a low risk of recurrence and their doctors will likely decide to forego chemotherapy, which has a huge impact on the patient’s quality of life and on the cost and success of the treatment,” she said.

SOHIN is currently looking to consolidate its leadership in the Mexican market and to export its business model to other countries like the United States, Chile and Colombia.Juana Ramirez is the third woman entrepreneur to win in her category throughout the six editions of the EY Entrepreneur

Of The Year™ Mexico program and she believes that today’s women business leaders need to work for fairness more than equality, and demonstrate their abilities: “This may sound counterintuitive because we are living in a world where women are doing more and more, but I would say that today women need to work harder than ever to show that they are capable, to win credibility, and to have their leadership accepted,” she said.n

“Sometimes as entrepreneurs we want to deal with everything at once. We focus on a whole range of different activities and we are always analyzing the many areas of our businesses all at the same time. What is so practical about the EY Growth Navigator is that it helps us

determine what is most important for our companies and what our priorities should be.Through the EY Growth Navigator EY provides access to tools that were previously only available to big corporations and transnational companies, and now smaller companies and new companies like ours can access these tools to help us make better decisions.”

EY Growth Navigator

More than three decades of working with high-potential companies from around the world has made us uniquely

qualified to identify the perspectives and leading practices that are critical for driving development.

It was this experience, along with our knowledge of the market, that led us to design seven key drivers that companies need to consider as they define their growth strategies, which we call The EY seven drivers of growth.

EY Growth Navigator™ is an interactive tool that provides a way for company directors and their executive teams to analyze the circumstances of their organizations based on these seven drivers of growth, which they can use to determine their priorities and the next steps on their road to growth. Each finalist entrepreneur of EOY 2015 Mexico had a EY Growth Navigator session. One of these participants described the experience as follows:
