Articles Message From the Volunteer Board Executive Committee Submitted by Jeanne Sanchez, Vice President and Sandy Gerulat, Secretary The Executive Committee hopes you all had a wonderful Holiday Season and were able to spend time with loved ones and close friends. Isn’t that what the holidays are all about anyway? We were so excited for our Open House on November 12th – but apparently, Mother Nature was more excited about providing some -4 degree weather and snow! We had to cancel for that date, but we plan to reschedule for early spring. It will be a great time for volunteers to meet each other, enjoy some snacks, and learn of upcoming volunteer opportunities. Remember the survey you received from the Restructure Task Force in September? Well, in October, a very similar survey was sent to staff at KRMA, KTSC, KRMJ, and KUVO via email. We were very excited to see that 53 individuals took time out of their busy days to complete the survey. There were suggestions for improved ways of communicating needs for volunteers, and we also learned of some possible new volunteer opportunities. The Restructure Task Force Group will analyze the results and the data will prove very helpful as we determine the future composition of the Volunteer Board. The Task Force anticipates being able to provide a detailed report at the January Volunteer Board meeting. Happy Holidays!!

On December 9 go to https://www.coloradogives.org/rmpbs/overview and donate. Thanks so much for your generosity! Join National Friends of Public Broadcasting! By Laura Sampson, Rocky Mountain PBS Volunteer since 1974

As an advocate and volunteer for public broadcasting, I invite you to go beyond the local level of volunteer support by joining me as a member of National Friends of Public Broadcasting.

As a forty-year volunteer for Rocky Mountain PBS, I have found that my 20-year affiliation with National Friends has greatly enhanced my local volunteer experiences by giving me a broader perspective and greater appreciation of the importance of public broadcasting and why the national volunteer efforts must be continued, supported and recognized. National Friends is a membership organization consisting of a vast network of public media volunteers and volunteer coordinators from both public television and public radio stations from across the country. The mission of NFPB is to

support volunteerism within public broadcasting through leadership, education, training, mentoring and recognition. For many years, Rocky Mountain PBS has demonstrated its support of volunteerism as a Patron member of National Friends of Public Broadcasting. Additionally, several of our current volunteers are individual members of National Friends: Betty Flaten, Donna Dickinson, Diane Papedo and myself. You, too, are invited to join the fun and become a member of National Friends. Why join? As a member and Trustee of National Friends, I am offered an array of opportunities. I learn and stay informed on national public media initiatives, successful volunteer-driven projects, unique volunteer recognition events, ways to be involved in grass roots advocacy, leadership opportunities and unique opportunities to work collaboratively with fellow public media volunteers on a national level. National Friends gives me opportunities to make lifetime friends from across the country, to attend national public media conferences, to participate as a

public media advocate on Capitol Hill, to assist in conducting national workshops, to participate as a panelist at conferences and webinars and to meet the “movers & shakers” of PBS and other public media organizations. I particularly love being able to share the vast knowledge acquired through these experiences when I return to volunteer at my favorite local station, Rocky Mountain PBS. You can do this, too!! I invite you to join me as an active member of National Friends. Explore their website, http://www.NFPB.org. If you have any questions or want to know more about National Friends of Public Broadcasting, please contact me: [email protected]. BE MORE, DO MORE – Join National Friends of Public Broadcasting today! SAM Sets the Standard for Archives Among PBS Stations By Laura Sampson, SAM Founder & Marketing Chair

Did you know that Rocky Mountain PBS is the only public broadcasting station in the country whose volunteers are archiving its history? Over the past fourteen years, more than 100 volunteers have proudly given their time and expertise to the volunteer-driven project known as “Station’s Archived Memories” (SAM) to collect, organize and digitally preserve the history of Rocky Mountain PBS. Throughout the coming year, SAM volunteers will continue to meticulously preserve the past and present activities of the station in preparation for the milestone celebration of sixty years of public broadcasting at Rocky Mountain PBS that will be celebrated in January, 2016. Your help is needed! Join this unique volunteer-driven group and become a part of the award-winning SAM project as the station prepares for its 60TH anniversary!

There remains much more to be documented. With each passing day, historic items are collected and new history is made. The future is bright for Rocky Mountain PBS and promises to provide an abundance of events, projects, productions and notable accomplishments needing to be entered into the archives for years to come. Both new and veteran volunteers are always welcome to join the SAM volunteers in the pursuit of saving the station’s history. You do not have to come with prior knowledge of the station’s history, but time, computer skills, an inquisitive mind and a love of history are primary pre-requisites. Along with general skills, SAM relies on volunteers with high-level skills, too, such as researchers, interviewers, database managers and more. If you have a high-level skill to share, please contact Station’s Archived Memories in Denver at 303-620-5734 or email [email protected] for more information. For more insight about the Rocky Mountain PBS archive project, please visit Station’s Archived Memories. New Staff at Rocky Mountain PBS Rocky Mountain PBS is very excited to welcome some new additions to the staff. These new folks are eager to meet the fabulous Rocky Mountain PBS volunteers. Stop in and say “hi” to the new staff. Denver Station Kathryn Roethel, Director of Digital Communications and Marketing

Volunteers play a critical role at Rocky Mountain PBS. The Rocky Mountain PBS volunteer corps donates (on average) 15,000+ hours per year. They expand the capacity of the organization in order to enhance the public outreach and sustain viewer support of the mission--  to inspire people to engage in deeper, more meaningful ways with the world around them. Volunteers enjoy the opportunity to work together supporting and leading station initiatives.
