Articles URGENT! Update Your 2013 Volunteer Hours NOW—Volunteer Recognition Event in April!  In preparation for the Volunteer Milestone (annual volunteer recognition) event tentatively set for April 4, 2014, we need all Rocky Mountain PBS volunteers to record your hours for 2013 (right up until December 31, 2013). An accurate account of hours is valuable to the station, not only as a record of what has been accomplished, but as an indication to foundations, businesses and other donors that what Rocky Mountain PBS does is supported and enhanced by the community. Decision-makers of all kinds look at the level of community involvement when awarding grants and both cash and in-kind support. That “community involvement” is YOU and your committee members. Volunteers annually do the work of at least 10 full-time staff members in bringing Rocky Mountain PBS to the attention of the people of Colorado. You and your committee members are vital to that proud tradition. Please help to make all these contributions apparent by insisting on recorded hours. The directions for both signing up and recording your hours are below. If you have ANY questions or run into ANY problems, please contact Susan Barber ([email protected]) Instructions for Recording Hours in Volunteer Database: *Go to www.rmpbs.org/volunteer *Go to "Record Your Volunteer Hours/Update Your Information” and under this heading, click on the words in blue “Click here and make sure your hours are counted.” *Under the header “Record your hours,” click on the words in purple “click here.” *Follow the Log In Directions Log in is your e-mail address Password is your volunteer number *Click on “ Post Your Hours” and submit Directions to Sign-Up in Volunteer Database Go to www.rmpbs.org/volunteer Click in the left hand margin “Apply to Volunteer” Click on words in blue “this form” Complete application and submit. You will receive a pin # which will serve as your password. President’s Message Submitted by Betty Flaten, President, Rocky Mountain PBS Volunteer Board At our January Volunteer Board meeting, Annual Giving Manager Louise Stephens gave an update on the December Colorado Gives total for Rocky Mountain PBS. It was over $115,000.00. This is higher than we reported in the January article. Again, a tremendous thanks to all our volunteers who donated to make it the best money collection day of the year. Many of you volunteered for the Downton Abbey events in January. Check out the pictures in the newsletter of volunteers who participated. Don’t forget to email them to family and friends and put on your Facebook page. More viewers watched the Sunday night premier of Downton Abbey than any other program shown on Denver/Colorado TV Channels. Don’t forget to take advantage of the Member discounts available online. Lately there have been some great deals for Avalanche and Nugget tickets. From the Heart will be held on Friday, February 14 (note date change) at the station (1089 Bannock St. – Teleconference Room) and next month the staff and volunteer recipients will be highlighted on these pages. If you would like to attend, let Jeanne Sanchez know by sending her an email at [email protected].

Our volunteers are our most important resource, and this month I want to give a big “Thank You” to Pete Schmidt and his team of Pledge volunteers. They work tirelessly all year raising the big dollars for the station. We are also thankful for the business, civic, and non-profit groups who volunteer to staff the phones during Pledge. Station Archived Memories keeps Rocky Mountain PBS history alive for staff and volunteers. Each month, Laura Sampson highlights a part of that history. I have learned so much about the station from Laura’s articles and urge each of you to join me in reading them. It is also fun to go to the RMPBS website, pick an icon and go through all the items under it. It isn’t always the big things that matter in volunteering. I wandered through the kitchen one day to find Patty Boyd and Laura Hoganson cleaning the microwave. That is not a fun task and all who use the kitchen owe them a big Thank You. Together we can!!! Renee Marcellis Reigns As Button Queen!

Renee Marcellis currently reigns as the Rocky Mountain PBS “Button Queen!” She keeps us reliably supplied with everyone’s favorite characters, shown in the line-up above. We give out these buttons at events both large and small—and they are always a very hot item! Last summer, Renee would pick up all the equipment, from die cutter to button maker to emergency repair equipment (needle-nosed pliers and super-skinny screwdriver) and carry it all off to her home. There, she would settle down with her friends Elmo, Big Bird, Clifford, etc. to enjoy hours of her favorite vice: major league baseball on cable and making buttons by the hundreds! Even though the baseball season has ended for the year, Renee has not stopped this wonderful gift to Rocky Mountain PBS: she even took the button-making equipment with her over the Christmas break and we greeted the new year with a refreshed supply of over a thousand buttons! Besides buttons, buttons and more buttons, Renee also volunteers her time to the 2014 Rocky Mountain PBS Online Auction as co-chair and to our events, most recently at the Masterpiece Costume Ball! She is a woman of many outstanding talents, and we’re very fortunate to be the recipient of so many of them! Check out the great photo of Renee in the Downton Abbey volunteers article below.

Happy Birthday, Rocky Mountain PBS On January 30, 1956, KRMA-TV beamed its first two hours of programming into Denver homes.

Most programs were only 15 minutes long. Station logs from 1956 show that one program was on film, one on kinescope, and the rest were broadcast live from the auto body shop studio located in the Emily Griffith Opportunity School on Glenarm Street.

At 6:45pm, the very first program was “Thimble Theater” featuring teacher, Earl Reum.

With their help, we were able to put on a beautiful event at the Grant-Humphries Mansion for 160 guests, including a catered dinner, open bar, silent auction, photo booth, museum exhibits, live music, dancing, and a sneak preview screening of Downton Abbey Season Four. We could not have done it without them! The volunteer team helped check patrons in, take coats, usher, assist the catering staff with food and drink, decorate the outside of the house and the downstairs “jazz club”, and many other tasks as they came up throughout the night. Everyone was willing to pitch in, get their hands dirty, and take on new projects and responsibilities. A big THANK YOU to all of you, from all of us here at Rocky Mountain PBS!

Premiere in Grand Junction: With over 80 attendees, RMPBS members and underwriters in Grand Junction had an opportunity to socialize and network, and were treated with apps from Bin 707 and wine from Talon Wines. In addition, we hosted a prize drawing, collected new email addresses, and shook hands and showed appreciation for our constituents. The screening was our new Development Associate Dana Wood's first event, and she even dressed up along with our volunteers! Thanks to Chriss Secrest, our volunteer coordinator, and her classy team of volunteers who helped host, and Priscilla Mangal, the Sentinel's 'On the Scene' society belle.
