The construction of Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve hotel, and the new Beach Club, are proceeding on schedule for the December 2012 opening. I’m sure you all have noticed the con-struction traffic and activity, but hope you have not been too inconvenienced. During the week, we now have 200-300 workers daily helping to build the hotel and new club facilities, and that will increase over the next few months as the pace of construction accelerates. As part of the construc-tion activities, we have started work on the new service/construction access for the property, to be located on 693 farther west of the main resort entrance. Once that is completed, it will help sepa-rate some of the construction traffic away from the main entrance. Later during the construction activities on the main entrance, which will also be reconstructed for the hotel’s opening, all traffic will temporarily share the service entrance to access the Resort.

The most advanced buildings are the hotel Reception building and the hotel guestrooms. The structures of these two-story buildings are already up to the second floor.

The Reception building’s lobby, main restaurant and library are all taking shape ten feet up in the air to enjoy the views down the coast. Soon, we will start forming the bridges that connect the different pieces of the Reception building, allowing guests and visitors to walk past the mature trees we have preserved on this site, and over the tropical gardens we will plant on the forest floor.

The structures of several of Spa Botànico’s twelve treatment rooms have also been completed over the past couple months.

The hotel’s Spa is a campus with approximately 20 different buildings surrounded by gardens and

pools. This month we will begin pouring concrete on the Spa’s main buildings.

Earthwork for the new Beach Club has largely been completed and building construction will begin soon. The Beach Club will include an adult lap pool, a family pool, a new Beach Grill, and a recreation of Rockefeller’s original Surf Room to host parties and events. As much as everyone loves West Beach Club, we’re sure you’ll love the new Dorado Beach Club even more.

The renovation of Su Casa is nearing completion. We are starting to tile the new pools and garden structures, and are finishing renovations on the upper floor to move in the new and refurbished furniture. Construction on the lower level, and fin-ished landscaping work, will continue over the next couple months.

Construction on the third Plantation condominium residence building is also nearing completion. We have removed the construction crane, and are now installing finishes throughout the building. Outside the Fitness Center, we have completed excavation for the new tennis courts, and will soon start work there on the retaining walls and landscaping.

As you can see, we are investing a lot of money and effort into improving Dorado Beach for our members, residents and guests. We appreciate ev-eryone’s patience and support as the new Dorado Beach unfolds.

Construction Update

Every day is a holiday at Dorado Beach, and every day the Resort keeps improving. We are truly blessed with the natural beauty that surrounds us and a lifestyle that should be the envy of the world. We only have to look around to see the splendor of the numerous colorful spring flowers emerging and the gorgeous trees bearing enormous amounts of mamey sapote and mango. Added to that color palette are the greenish-blue waters of the Atlantic lapping at our pristine beaches, and the brightly colored Easter eggs, recently found by the smiling children of our member families. And to think, it is only getting better.

In January, I reported on all of the new and wonderful facilities that had recently opened, and this month I am happy to report that we continue to show progress and growth in all areas. At West Beach, Luis Feliciano, Chef Cedeño and their teams continue to provide ex-ceptional beach and dining experiences to members and guests. When we started accepting credit card payment from the guests of members, we experienced an increase in turnout at the beach restaurant and bar. Please remember, West Beach remains exclusive to members and their guests, and guests must be

accompanied by a member at all times. Members will need to have their ID’s at all times. We expect atten-dance to increase during the summer months, so we have ordered more chairs and umbrellas to enhance your enjoyment, and have already added new ham-mocks and a fire pit for your relaxation.

Very soon, we will open our new Membership and Real Estate Sales offices on the ground floor of the Plantation Clubhouse, facing the golf courses. The clubhouse will receive a bit of a “facelift” over the next several months. Plans are to re-model Zafra Restaurant in order to enhance the fine-dining experience. The locker rooms will receive new carpeting, new tile, and fresh paint. We are developing an exclusive member area in the room next to the Zafra Bar, and we are adding to the golf shop a hotel reception area with more exciting types of merchandise to choose from. To top it all off, the air conditioning will be engi-neered to perform better, and the exterior is being repainted. You may have already noticed that many of the new bricks were installed along the pathways in an effort to improve the look and to make them easier to maintain. All these improvements will take

place without closing, so please “excuse our dust” while we work to complete the upgrades.

For you golfers, Brad Boyd and his staff continue to improve playing conditions on all of the courses. The West Course greens on holes #16 and #17 are now complete, and we hope to have them playable in the latter part of July. Construction on the East Course is complete as well, and we have entered into the grow-in phase, with plans to reopen in November. If you want an up-close and personal look, we continue to offer tours to those interested in hearing about and seeing the exciting changes. Please contact Anamari Caratini, Member Relations Manager, to schedule your tour.

Finally, in July you will be receiving the annual member satisfaction survey from InsightOut. Please take time to fill it out as we need your feedback in order to continue improving our services. Have a fabulous summer.

Carlos & Betzaida Delgado, Residents, Dorado Beach East

Carlos Delgado is known to baseball fans here at home and across the country as a talented slugger who holds numerous hitting records and other awards. Plagued by an injury, it was with bittersweet emotions that Carlos returned to Puerto Rico and announced his retirement from baseball.

“I explored all the options after my hip injury,” Carlos mused, “but the reality is that the time arrived when my body could not take the work required to compete at this level. It’s sad to stop pursuing what has been my passion for 22 years, but when one door closes, another opens.”

Carlos is delighted to now have time to spend with his family. He is enjoying the ability to celebrate holidays such as Mother’s Day and Father’s Day at home with his wife and children, take his son to school, and chase his active almost two-year-old daughter around the house. He also has more time to dedicate to his foundation, Extra Bases, and even has time to chat about his new home.

What made you choose Dorado Beach to make your home?

We were looking for a place between San Juan and my hometown of Aguadilla, and Dorado is ideally situated, with a better quality of life and less stress than San Juan. When we entered the facilities, the security and safety for our kids were important factors in our decision to buy at Dorado Beach. We love the family environment we find at the Dorado Beach East Hangar, at the clubhouse, and throughout the com-munity. Also important was school for my son, Carlos Antonio. TASIS Dorado has been excel-lent for him!

As you explore your new home, what are your favorite places on the Dorado Beach property so far?

The Watermill is at the top of my son’s list! Carlos Antonio loves “el Molino de Agua.” Since I’m from Aguadilla, I also love the beach area.

What can you tell us about your family? Does your son enjoy school?

Carlos Antonio is four years old and already has a group of friends at TASIS Dorado. Mariana Isabel is a year and ten months old; she is at home and is always on the go. Betzaida is an excellent mom and wife.

How does the Fitness & Wellness Center figure into your post-baseball conditioning plans?

The facilities and equipment are perfect for keeping in shape, so I use them between two and four times per week. In fact, the Center is perfectly equipped even for competitive training!

Do you intend to become involved in Puerto Rico’s baseball world?

At some point, yes, but I don’t know yet in what capacity. I first want to share my knowledge and experience with kids and young men who might be able to follow the same career path.

You are said to be talented in other sports, such as volleyball. Is golf among your interests?

I don’t play golf, but I would really like to learn once my hip has fully healed. I am very competitive, so if I start to play, I want to do it right!

How can your new neighbors join you in your commitment to the underprivileged and participate in your Extra Bases organization?

We are developing a new webpage that tells all about our focus on giving support to the institutions that take care of underprivileged children. We want to give voice to these children’s dreams! My concern started in Aguadilla when I saw that funds didn’t reach children there at the same rate as those in the metro area. This motivated me to create better opportunities for

these children and the institutions that help them. I am proud to say that we have been able to donate more than $3 million in the last ten years.

People can get information from www.extrabases.org, and a new Facebook page and Twitter account, both called Extra Bases PR, will help us to create a database of volunteers and donors. It will be an active group dedicated to raising awareness of people who need our help.

What advice can you give to aspiring athletes?

First of all, identify the field that inspires your true passion, and then show dedication, discipline and consistency in pursuit of your goals. Always practice and be mentally focused; the mind is what makes the difference in success, and perseverance is vital.

Is there anything you would like to add?

I used to say, “De Aguadilla nadie me saca” (Nobody can take me from Aguadilla), until I visited Dorado!

Families feasted on a scrumptious Easter Brunch buffet while their children worked on crafts and had their faces beautifully painted. The highlight, of course, was a visit from the Easter Bunny, who led a spirited Easter Egg hunt.

Dorado Beach Traditional Easter Brunch

Spanish Wine Dinner Wine writer and educator Amarylis Dávila teamed up with our own Chef José Cedeño to offer a magnificent five-course extravaganza. Each sumptuous course was perfectly paired with the ideal Spanish wine. Guests were fascinated to hear how the ingredients of each dish combined with each wine’s attributes for a flavor explosion greater than the sum of its parts!

Stone Crabs at the BeachStone Crabs are a seasonal delicacy always in short supply, but we had a limitless mountain of the tasty claws recently at West Beach! What could be better than the freshest seafood enhanced with a touch of lemon juice and accompanied by skinny margaritas? The season is over for now, but we’ll bring back this wonderful treat when the season opens again.

West Beach JamWest Beach rocked to the classic tunes of two home-grown bands as over 350 members and friends showed up to hear Tüfo and Joint Decision! The sounds of old favorites filled the air as people danced into the wee hours of the morning!
