Who were the Native Americans?•People had been living in America for thousands of years before Christopher Columbus arrived in 1495.

•He believed he had landed in India and noticed the natives wearing a lot of red paint. This is where the name ‘Red Indians’ came from.

•There were ‘Plains Indians’ and ‘Forest Indians’ who lived differently, off the land around them.

Tribes• Native Americans lived in tribes.

• Each tribe has their own customs, language and history.

• There were over 30 different Plains Indians tribes.

• Tribes were split into bands, each containing a few hundred people.

• Each tribe had a chief as a leader, and a council of elders who discussed issues and problems.

• Most tribes had a medicine man, who was very wise and could contact the spirit world.

• Today, these tribes are much smaller in numbers but many of the traditions remain.

Native American Tribes

Native Americans are often grouped into tribes or nations. These groupings are generally based on peoples that shared the same culture, language, religion, customs, and politics. There are over 1000 Native American Tribes in the United States.

The tribes have settled in fourteen states across the United States of America. On next slide, there is a map of America of where the tribes have settled and what Native Indian tribes have settled in these areas.

Native American TribeArctic/Subarctic -These Native Americans survived some of the coldest weather on the planet. They include the Inuit people of Alaska who live primarily off of whale and seal meat.

Native American TribeGreat Basin - This is a dry area and was one of the last to have contact with Europeans. The Great Basin tribes include the Washo, Ute, and Shoshone.

Native American TribeGreat Plains - One of the largest areas and perhaps most famous group of American Indians, the Great Plains Indians are known for hunting bison. They used to be nomadic people who moved constantly following the bison herds. Tribes of the Great Plains include the Blackfoot, Arapaho who lived in tepees and the, Cheyenne, Comanche and Crow.

Native American TribeNortheast Woodlands - Includes the Iroquois Indians of New York, the Wappani, and the Shawnee.

Native American TribeNorthwest Coast/Plateau - These Native Americans are known for their houses made of cedar planks as well as their totem poles. Tribes include the Nez Perce, Salish, and the Tlingit.

Native American TribeSoutheast - The largest Native American tribe, the Cherokee,live in the Southeast.

Other tribes include the Seminole in Florida and the Chickasaw. These tribes tend to stay in one place and are skilled farmers.

Native American TribeSouthwest - The Southwest is dry and the Native Americans live in tiered homes made out of adobe bricks. Famous tribes here include the Navajo Nation, the Apache, and the Pueblo Indians.
