RRWF Fashion Show a
great success please see
pages 6 and 8
Wow! Our yearly Fashion Show luncheon, Membership Drive, and
Fundraiser is over. It is the single most time consuming project we do.
My favorite moment of the Fashion Show was when Billie Payne
asked the four UCR students from Young Americans for Freedom
(YAF) to introduced themselves. Their conservative and Republican
ideas came bubbling out. It was almost as if they couldn’t help
themselves. They definitely had something to say!
I wanted to stand up, wave my arms and cheer! I am so encouraged by
their enthusiasm. Our gift of one thousand dollars will fulfill their
desire to bring a conservative speaker to campus in the fall. We are all invited.
Some of our generous members paid in advance for any members of Young Americans for Freedom
to attend our Fashion Show and come to our luncheon on the 17th to hear Assembly Woman Melissa
Melendez. Way to go team!

PRESIDENT’S
MESSAGE
May Speaker: Melissa Melendez
SUPERWOMAN to Speak at May Luncheon
Melissa Melendez needs no introduction to the Riverside Republican Women
Federated! This US Navy Vet, Russian speaking, Mom of Five, Wife, MBA
graduate, Ohio Born, SUPER WOMAN serves as the Assemblywoman for
California’s 67th Assembly District, which includes Western Riverside County.
Melissa is a U.S. Navy veteran who attended the Defense Language Institute in
Monterey to study Russian. After becoming fluent in Russian, Melissa became
one of the first women approved to fly aboard EP-3 reconnaissance aircraft overseas, conducting
reconnaissance and intelligence gathering operations. She has served her country for ten years in the Navy,
during the Cold War, Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Melissa has a Bachelor’s degree in History
and Political Studies and a Master’s degree in Business Administration. After leaving the Navy, Melissa
started her own small business providing transcription services to high-level Pentagon officials. She lives in
Lake Elsinore with her husband Nico, also a Navy veteran, and their five children. Melissa is a very
outspoken proponent of conservative values, holds frequent town hall sessions, is accessible and a true thorn
in the side of her democratic colleagues at the California State Assembly.

ongoing operations in the Middle East.
These young Marine families are normally living far from home, and do not have family and friends to put baby showers on for

Hard Work Became A Successful Fashion Show
3rd Vice President, Natalie Simon, Chairwoman of our Fashion Show, looks back on the event with
pride for the many, many people that stepped up and combined a lot of talent, hard work and
dedication to create a very successful event, It takes a lot of effort and vision to bring a large
production like the RRWF Fashion Show to realization and success. We can not say THANK YOU
often enough to our volunteers. From the planning to the final moment when our members and
guests walked out the door with many prizes, the hard work was very evident.
Please look at our sponsor list and be aware that each item on the list is there because a volunteer
contacted the business or person, delivered a letter of request for a donation, followed up at a later
time, and often had to go back later to do the pickup. It didn’t end there because every donation had
to receive a thank you letter, many were hand delivered. Annette Rainey was responsible for all
letters of request and all follow-up thank you letters. If you see a members’ name on the list it will
mean the member personally contributed a donation.
All donations were divided into drawing or silent auction items. Diana Gazzolo and Annette
Rainey combined items and put together wonderful baskets for a beautiful display. Big job! Well
Done!!!
All flower arrangements were done by our members Alma Hill, Andi Babbe and Joanie Hagen.
Each arrangement was in a tea pot or container donated by our generous members. Beautiful
work!!!!
Kathy Wright made the arrangements for Chico’s and Brighton to sponsor our Fashion Show.
Karen Fox was our model coordinator organizing models and appointments to pick out clothes. All
models, Linda Boecher, Eva Brown, Karen Brown, Jolin Crofts, Sherill Franklin, Judy
Kanouse, Donna Sandoval and Brenda Wood are members who volunteered their talents.
Lorrie Stirling seemed to be everywhere capturing memories with her camera.
Check the pictures on page 5 to see the awesome project created and put together by Diana Gazzolo,
Jill Buysse, Katie Donovan, Lisa Hale, Diane Bishop, Doreen Alewine, Joan Gridley, Pat
Mitchell, Barbara Hofman, Bette Rowe and Linda Jackson.
Ticket Sellers. Dianne Mills, Patricia Mitchell, Eileen and Joe Phillips, and Anna Tran.
Greeters: Shirley Nejedly, Jan Walsh and Kathee Cowieson.
Meetings, communications, organization and general roll up the sleeves work: Jim Gaytan, Barbara
Hofman, Shelly Lindekugel, Dianne Mills, Billie Payne, Marion Peterson, Vicki Phillips, Julie
Salzman, and numerous other people gave many hours of dedication.
Many of our volunteers did several jobs. This was truly a club event. In total, we had over 75
members and sponsors. We hope we’ve given everyone a view of all the people that worked hard
but more importantly we hope we conveyed our thanks and appreciation to everyone.
To each and everyone, a huge THANK YOU!!!!!!

Legislation Report May, 2019
Legislation to Watch Closely: SB50Written by legislator Scott Wiener, SB 50 rewards developers to buy and demolish single-family housing and
apartments near rail, train, ferry or busy bus stops AND near jobs and schools. SB 50 kills local planning rules,
letting buildings tower over homes. The towers can include NO parking, NO space for trees, NO setbacks, and
NO design standards. All that developers must do is include a few "affordable" rental units.

A Flag For Every Hero: Annual Memorial Day Flag Project at Riverside National
CemeteryMemorial Day is the day we honor our Fallen. Honoring Our Fallen is working collaboratively with many
local community members and businesses to honor more than 200,000 Heroes with flags in their honor.
Honoring Our Fallen seeks volunteers to assist in purchasing and placing flags out on gravesites at Riverside
National Cemetery for both Memorial Day and Veterans Day each year. A call has gone out for volunteers to
assist a nonprofit group in posting miniature American flags alongside the graves of servicemembers buried at
Riverside National Cemetery as part of a Memorial Day weekend tribute that’s expanded since it started seven
years ago.
Riverside National Cemetery is the third largest national cemetery currently managed by the VA National
Cemetery Administration. It holds 20-30 services daily and is the fastest growing national cemetery in the
country.

According to the UK Sun Newspaper 875 French churches were vandalized just last year.
CHURCHES across France have been set on fire and poo smeared on walls as the country’s Christian
heritage is said to be under attack from “militant secularism”.
The latest fire was in the historical Notre Dame. Other recent incidents have included a fire in Saint-Sulpice
church in Paris, human poo daubed on a wall in Notre-Dame-des-Enfacts in Nimes, and an organ vandalized
at Saint-Denis basilica outside Paris. Some politicians have claimed the country’s Christian heritage is under
threat from petty criminals encouraged by “militant secularism”.
Figures released by French police showed 875 of France’s 42,258 churches were vandalized in 2018.
Further 129 churches reported thefts from their premises. The interior ministry said that 59 cemeteries were
also vandalized. The churches were vandalized by radical leftists and Muslims..
